Garriott, like most "creatives" is not necessarily the greatest at running a company.  It's not a shock, as those are two very different skill sets.

That said, the stuff that came out of Origin Systems was instant MUST BUY for me.  The stuff they put out in the decade from mid 80s to 90s is at least as good as any other studio. Between them and SSI it truly was the golden age.

Gotta love the people shitting on Richard Garriot... all people who didn't achieve 1% of what he did in his life.
Yeah, I admire the guy. He started selling games in plastic bags in front of computer shops, and now he managed to take a stroll in space. A self made man, not some kind of rich kid because his father was rich.
He's more than you haters will ever be, and that makes you so hateful.
Yeah, it's the internet, after all.
I was reading up on Garriott at his Wikipedia page, I agree that he's pretty impressive.

Everyone makes mistakes, and everyone has flaws, so I guess it's a case of looking at the big picture.
Humans have been "crucifying" their former "idols" since long before the internet. ;)

Origin Systems ran well because Richard's brother Robert was a very good businessman.  He could also crack the whip. He was sometimes disliked because he'd cut out various grandiose promises that Richard blithely uttered.

Richard Garriott wasn't great at the business end of things, which is why he had Starr Long in tow for so many years, post Origin.

RG had creative ideas for a period of time.  When you think that started to founder is a personal viewpoint.

"Everquest is in a slightly better position, but I don't give them 5 more years unless there is some classic MMRPG resurgence where lots of kids want to play grandpa's retro game."

I dont know how the EQs both keep on going...i'll log in once in awhile and there is rarely ever anyone around, but somehow people are still buying the expansions and some are even paying subs, so as long as they have that the game stays alive.

    This makes alot of sense.

Sometimes its the right combo of people and their skills that make things work well together.

This is probably the problem with many big companies, they are lacking people with the right skill sets at the top.

Just because you can dream up or program a game doesnt make good leader or executive.

I'm glad they didn't make UO2 - the tech wasn't where it needed to be at the time.
They should be making it now with New World graphics.

Yeah, they might have had to release it with tech similar to WOW's 2004 release and that clearly would never have been sufficient at the time.  ;)

Late to the party, as usual, but I've just started Mortal Online 2. I'm 42 and UO was my first love. I can honestly say, that in the past 30 years I've never played a game that gave me the feeling of being a 12 year old exploring Britania for the first time - until now. I'm absolutely addicted. It is the modern - beautifully created - Ultima experience you all want.

Just about any graphics were better than the first UO....Even if it had EQ quality graphics it would have been an upgrade.

Yeah all game will disappoint eventually, they all fall short, nothing will satisfy like the real thing - life, Ive come to the realization we have the best game developed already.  Its just harder.  But a perfect sandbox , unlimited crafting potential with chemistry and science, billions of endless maps to explore (planets)  all comming in ray traced at infinite FPS. THe "figure out warp drive" quest is still active if anyones interested. I know you dont have high enough level to do it your saying, and ones that do say its impossible, so where stuck ehre making up fake aliens until our sun burns out I guess.  Maybe we can upload ourselves into games that let us travel the stars before that happens?  Nah we'll never develope anything as cool as what the universe has, even our wildest imaginations the universe has stranger things in store, so im not sure how good video games can get.  AI will definately help, fully immersive worlds with unscripted stories and not having to rely on real peolpe to fill roles to make things work will change gaming, but even that will be a toy compred to the real thing.  And thats what i think video games are in the end, toys, but useful ones, ones that let you practise for the real thing, evnetually you'll have to take on a real quest.

Right! .... hell I'm considering getting back into UO just because I'm tired of the current mmorpg all being crafting survival games without lore and actual npc cities etc
  • richrem1richrem1 Member UncommonPosts: 198
The era of making games, for the sake of making games, is gone. It's all about money now; and why gaming has gone (mostly) to shit. Every once in a while, you'll find a rose in the sea of shit.

UO Badlands is crazy popular at the moment.  More popular than the origin servers

I'm not even talking about Ultima Online.  But the actual Ultima CRPG series.  These were landmark games in the history of PC Gaming, and yet it's been 25 years since we got the abomination that was Ultima IX.

I know Garriott had a nasty breakup and got to keep his Lord British character, but wouldn't it be a great time to get an Ultima game on the market?  Maybe toss Garriott a consulting credit or let him outline the story.  It seems so strange to let this property languish.

I assume the rights are still with EA...

Quite simple.  Everyone hates Garriott.  They would never bring back Ultima because he would still be remembered/attached to it.  He really was that hated in the industry

Honestly, I would feel bad for anyone taking on the challenge of a new Ultima.  Can you imagine the volume of complaints they would get.  Everyone and their cousins would be 'the original did this, the original did that' ... you should do this, you should do that.  You're destorying the legacy, the graphics aren't good enough, the content isn't good enough, the publisher isn't good enough, the team is too small, the developer isn't good enough.

My god, people lose their shit when they raise the price of the cosmetic cape by a dollar.  Noooo, best everyone pass on this one.  It would be a thankless job.

Didn't they do an Ultima Forever or something that I don't know if it still exists. Was awhile ago. It probably died.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

    Didn't stop Chris Roberts.

But most of the Ultima background is still EA.  And after the failure of SotA, don't think Garriott can play the independent card.
