I also played for a while. Travel in this game is horrible. The player movement speed is awful in comparison to the size of the zones. The monoliths help a little but you still need to use ember to travel. I enjoyed my time in the game, but it just feels like you’re playing in a big empty mystery world. It doesn’t mesh well in my opinion. The team that works on the game are great and committed, but I just don’t think this type of game can exist in today’s world. I appreciate the “old school” attempt, but let’s be real..as much as we miss those days, there are very few people, who can really commit the time it takes.
During the first open weekend I enjoyed it. I was considering playing but when I go to the forums and read into it, I just can't.
It just does not look like people are having fun and that its a slow solo progress.
When playing the free weekend, I played the whole time and made it to the 2nd zone. Thats when it fell apart fast. Same vendors selling the same garbage and no body in the entire zone but me and no quests to speak of to keep me at least busy.

And this is is the issue with the classic, old school design. When I started with MMOs around 2001, I played EQ and DAOC. I then went to SWG. All the games were the same for the most part - get a group, find a good camping spot, and farm mobs to level. Heck DAOC gave grouping and camping bonus experience so it even incentivized it. The only thing you did in DAOC solo was travel. And then you camped and leveled and hope you did not die because you would not only lose your camping spot, you would lose a level maybe (EQ grrrr). There is a reason I left grouping, camping, corpse runs, level loss, and all of that behind.
Classic old school is great if you have a dedicated group to play but when people leave, there is nothing to do. It was a different mentality and modern games do not play like that and modern players mostly do not want games like that.

While I mostly played solo in Lineage 2 I did group with my fair share of players. Didn’t take much to get a group. I figured out there was a whole game world of players who wanted to group but were too shy to say anything.

I'm surprised this game is still around........ Still no magic in game?
There is magic, but not of the quickly cast blasting variety. It is done through alchemy, which allows the manipulation of objects through Ember and that related.
It is essentially the enchantment of items.
Despite the constant depiction in these forums of the game being on the cusp of failure they enjoy enduring modest success.
I find it odd in a forum where the dearth of new MMORPGs is so often lamented that when one actually does arrive it is harshly rejected. That it appeals to few doesn't negate that is has become a new home for some that were previously lacking one. Such should be welcomed rather than condemned.

I don't think anyone is condemning it, more like how many times to we have to watch the same thing happen. This game has a nice base but it's just hollow. Progression was meant to be done with groups which is fine but, sadly most players don't want to anymore.

I wonder if that's really true? I don't think it is.
I think that the original group of players, those who were enamored with a group based, social game, still want it. And of that group, those who still play video games.
It's just a smaller subset of the "new" players who are more enamored with solo play. Even in World of Warcraft's "Heyday" I think the players were more interested in chatting and playing alongside others but weren't as heavily interested in groups.
It will just take one or two exceptionally made games, but games that don't require millions to be playing, to get a good lot of them in one or two places.

Forced grouping mmos are always gonna fail because what are you gonna do when there are no ppl in your lvl range Most gamers are not gonna waste 1-2 hours lfg like we did in EQ times are diffenent now
BTW welcome to the forums!

I still support MMORPG's and want any MMORPG to succeed. I am looking forward to Ashes of Creation, Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen and Monsters and Memories to come out (hopefully in my lifetime) and do well

meh ... there's not such thing as "forced grouping." By that logic there's "forced solo, forced raiding, forced playing-the-game."
But games that require or are designed with groups in mind just have to be decent, the developers need to figure out a way to augment groups, or just supply solo content but content that is superseded by groups.
So, once again, "Lineage 2." What a great game.

I do not think its about being forced to group, to me, its about options. I like options. I like to login any maybe group, maybe solo, maybe chat, maybe craft, etc.... Give me options. ESO gives some of the most options to a player right now and thats one of the reasons I love it. Same with WOW right now. One night I logged in and just tracked down hunter pets in Pandaria that have to be literally tracked and only visible to hunter skills. It took hours and I got them and loved every minute.
I tried it but if it came down to this or Dark Age of Camelot in its dated form, I would choose DAOC.
Any game in development (which this is even though it "launched") is going to face serious questions when compared to a game that has launched no matter how long ago it launched.

There is no forced grouping in games now but I remember a time in mmos that couldnt solo almost anything unless you were a certain class which in return wasnt wanted in groups So yes at a time there was forced grouping and I will never play again a game like say ffxi or daoc as they were when tey released back in 2002 or something
I don’t see how that was forced. That was the game. It’s like going to a water park and saying it’s forced getting wet when you go on a ride or playing football and saying it’s forced “getting tackled”.

I think you may be a tad optimistic.
It used to be 10 players, but they refused to fix a problem with the armor in the game, and I quit in frustration.
