I thought they redid this game with Unreal 5? Why does all the videos and pics look grainy and terrible?

They are having problems with the graphics. There is feedback all over the A2 forums. Also they are still redoing the world from the move from UE4. This is still part of the development. IMO seeing how far this has set them behind. They should have stayed with UE4.

I don't know what they "redid", but the game looks 10+ years old. It's one thing if you have more stylized graphics like WoW or even Runescape. But if you're going for the more "realistic" look, It's harder. The game basically looks like a slight upgrade visually from Everquest 2. The particle effects are better, but that's about it.

Couple that with the dated animations and uninspired class/skill systems, and I really can't find a reason anyone would play this particular MMO instead of any of the MANY similar games in the already overaaturated fantasy genre.

Not to mention the full loot open PvP...

There is this to remember, graphics and animations are not normally the first thing you polish. They will be updating to UE5.4 soon. The animations tools it has are epic. I think IS has stopped working in that for that reason. Will be way easier later.

I have a LOT of issues with the honesty of the developer.  But I actually thought the graphics are ok. I like them better than the crazy effects heavy stuff I’ve seen in his promos.

I spent a lot of time watching actual player streams over the last few weeks and honestly liked what I saw. My biggest issue is trying to decide how much of the game is really compete.  I don’t trust Stephen’s word.  It concerns me that it’s still missing classes, is limited to low level, and a very small area of the supposed game world.  But as far as gameplay, I think it looked pretty good.

I keep going back and forth on it.  One of my longtime gaming friends is going in tonight so I’m going to wait and see what he says. If we took the developer out of the equation I would have already bought it.

The fact that the developers stream content to show off their progress that doesn't yet exist in the public test environment is concerning.

Now I get it, they could be streaming from their Dev environment to show off recent  changes that have not made it to QA, UAT or pre-production environments. (Star Citizen often does this, same where I worked in fact)

But if this is the case they should tell their testers and share a tentative date on when said major changes might be available for public testing.

Face it, the game is doa. PvP focused and forced pvp loses most players. The game lacks any interesting characters. It is already mtx focused, which usually happens at the end of a games life. And it will be 20 years old before it releases.

The Mayors of a node get flying mounts. Narc (ashes streamer) flew his mount to the desert and it does exist. Only way you can her there is a flying mount. They do have us in a box right now but the game is developed further out then they are testing.

IS has been clear they are building the structor of Ashes in the Riverlands that we are testing now. Once they have the structure done, they will apply it to the other areas of the game. This is a common development process. Once the River Lands are done, theoretically, the other areas will just need to attach its content to that structure they've applied from what they've done with Riverlands.

That being said. All of Ashes that Steven wants to launch with is bigger then in square kilometers is bigger then all of WoW and it's expansions. I just don't see that happening in the time line set out.

The comment section's knowledge of this game is comical.
Every time Goonsquad/SA/DS post salt on Star Citizen, I spend more money on it. Every time a mentally disturbed former backer or Elite CMDR toxic emo comments, I spend more money on it. Every time they refuse to answer why they spend so much time arguing about a game they don't even like, I spend more money on it. Want to watch the world burn because you can't have your way? You got whats coming to you.

This sounds so much like how Pantheon is being developed as well as the approach Roberts Industries is taking with SC.

Yet in both of those games succeeding new  areas being created more quickly really hasn't played out yet despite both being in development even longer than Ashes.

Maybe the third time will be a charm, eh?

I’m traveling for work but a guy I have gamed with for over 2 decades played this weekend.  Here is his feedback (and remember that I think Stephen is slimy as they come)

Short answer, impressively very, very good.

It is in Alpha so there are a lot of weird bugs like NPCs in weird spots like on roofs or floating in air. There are a lot of weird spawn death animations when you cross zone borders, stuff like that. Walking and riding animations could use some polishing.

But gameplay is impressively fun once you learn the mechanics of your character. I am playing a bard Nd that’s the only class I have tried but so far I am liking the class. I am really impressed at the content. In the starting area alone there were a ton of quests to pickup. One quest was an intro into the gathering/crafting aspect of the game and the reward at the end was your horse.

The game is beautiful and the mob models are very well done.

There are random events you can join where you get rewards not unlike a lot of other games with the same mechanic. The world seems well populated with plenty of mobs to farm.

I am liking the pace of the game so far too. I have probably played 4-5 hours and I am only level 6. Some of that is due to the fact that I was figuring out what to do and I did do some exploring. But it seems like it’s not a game where you will get max level in a couple days.

Overall I am really impressed at the state of the game and I am having a great time playing it.

The combat is really enjoyable. Class design is engaging. I have made a Bard, Cleric and a Mage. I got a Cleric to level 5 in about 2hrs but I just replicated what I did on my Bard. I put on heavy armor and a sword and shield and played him like a Paladin. Was allot of fun. Questing is boring. I really hope they remove it from the game or put allot more work on it. I have yet to see even one event.

Commission board is ment to point you to side quests that triggers events. None of that is working. Main quest lines are not fun as well. Pointers don't always send you in the right direction. And...

It's the most fun I have had in an MMO in a very long time. Teaming happens organically. People just invite people to get harder content done. There is a good balance of DPS, tanks and support. Exploring as a team is just fun. The classes also synergize really well.

I do dispute and I have personally seen the areas of the game that looked UE5 and looking great. I have also seen areas that are clearly ported over and not retouched by the development team. I can dispute it because I'm playing the game.

    From the internet...

It’s quite common for games to be developed in phases and to use frameworks from other areas to build new sections. The game development process typically follows several stages, including planning, pre-production, production, testing, and post-production1.

During these stages, developers often use game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine, which provide a robust framework with built-in features such as physics engines, 3D rendering tools, and scripting languages. This allows developers to focus on creating unique aspects of the game without having to build everything from scratch.

By using these frameworks, developers can efficiently build and expand different areas of the game, ensuring consistency and saving time. This approach also helps in maintaining a cohesive design and gameplay experience throughout the development process.
