This is what a "Lead game designer" has to say to old fan (registered jan 2003)

The cow thingy is a popular screenshot in DNL representing the actual cow excrement. But the fan made to error to find funny, and yet representating of the current project state.

Anyhow, can anyone find acceptable such a public insulte on a (game or other) project forum by a member of the team to an old fan???

I find it outrageous... yet just so DNL...

As with everything, when taken out of context, it's very hard to determine a person's state of mind when saying/writing things when they do.

If Vuaar was serious and not in a kdding mood, then I agree, it's overdone and totally uncalled for.

He was serious, but the context was a bit peculiar.
He wrote that as a response to a very very angry customer...and got angry himself.

And well, he just went too far in his reply.

AD, please, leave this project. You do not diserve this. You're doing the dirty work cleaning the mess that you're not responsible of. You diserve better than this game.

DnL was short lived for me. Only 5 days. I went through various stages, starting from Well Enclined and ending into Hateboy.
Yes, I dare to say it: I hate NP3. I hate your ostracism. Dividing the community of a game between those who play and those who don't, between those who say good things about your game and those who say reasonnable things, well this makes me sick.

What good did the reasonable critics we voiced in beta?? DnL is filled with bugs that Beta testers reported 2 years ago, and almost none of them was addressed. Stop fooling with us, Vuuar. 'cos between you and me, Stephane, who's the one who's afraid to show videos of his own game? Who doesn't meet with specialized websites at the E3? Who doesn't lift te NDA (which has no value whatsoever anyway)? Who forges screenshots with photoshop?

I followed this threads in the french forums and i understand Vuaar's reply. This post of an "old fan" (with only 25 posts on the boards since 2003

) was a flame in the context. In fact every annoucement (here the opening of a new forum for customers only, like a lot of other mmorpgs official forums...) in the french forums is followed by some post like that.

I just began to read and reply here and i don't know exactly how the "climat" is. But posts like this one everywhere is very boring. And this one was, i find, familiar and insulting for Vuaar

. It's why i understand Vuaar, which is a human too

I've done my fair share of bashing the game, but I can understand this guy cracking. Even the nicest guy in the world has a cracking point. You gotta think not only is he getting flamed here, but he is getting flamed in his own forums, which is is house, so to speak. But I'm guessing it doesn't stop there. Any other company involved with this game is probably applying pressure on him to. I'm sure they know how well their investment has been recieved.

Now I'm not saying I really feel sorry for any of them. If we feel sorry for them, then other game developers will start putting out sub-par products, that never really have a beta. They'll do this in the hopes people will feel sorry for them and buy an incomplete, unstable product with no real release date in sight. They never should have asked for money from the players several months in advance. They should have gone through real beta stages and tested the game. They definately should make sure little things like performance, logging in and such were in order before even announcing a release date.

The way it stands now, what do they really have to do? They've already sold the game to people. They still have fans that hang on to the hope of "Well, it has potential" Which by the way is the only thing I've seen people who do like the game say. The people that dislike it, give reasons and examples. The other side can only say it has potential. What exactly is this potential? What is going to make this game stand out? What can D&L offer me no other game can?

I think DnL got lucky that SWG imploded right at the time of their Pioneer offering. A lot of people were looking for a good game that formed communities and DnL promised (and still hasn't fulfilled) a lot of things about community building, player cities, etc.

Totally unexcusable for the Dev to even think about saying like that back. It only further shows the absolute horrendous display of the treatment of anyone who has anything bad whatsoever. I happen to agree with the poster's assessment of the action Farlan is taking. It is directly in response to the horrendous "game" they are trying to shove down everyones throat. Hiding it and banning all but the "good" people is indeed the most laughable and again, horrendous action any developer can take when trying to prove they are good to the customers. Its a joke. A customer gave his views, the Developer should not have come back and lowered himself to the mentality of his fanbois.

It was not a flame. The guy he answered was one of the oldest fans on theses forums. Yes, he did not post often, but that is not a crime.

What I felt when I red this message, was someone who spoke truth. Someone who believed in DnL at a time, and felt deceived.

What vuuar said ( to a customer !!! ), I felt it that way : Imagine your gilfriend enters the room, crying, saying "I hate you, I'm gonna leave you", and your answer is "shut the fuck up you dirty old bitch"...

That's not a way to comfort her, that's not a way to regain her love, that's not what she's expecting to hear, that's not even a way to talk to a girl.

Fluent French speaker here, and I can confirm what he wrote is correct. Although there is one difference, he said "bouse" not "merde", so it wouldn't be as offensive as "shit", but more "poop". I didn't see the post, so maybe someone took it out of context.

But the sentence was extremly agressive

The word "kiffé" ( written with a bad grammar mistake ) is quite agressive. It is slang equivalent of "enjoy". But it is a slang used only by young teens, and what could be compared with gansta style talking ( you see, when Black people refer to each other saying "yo nigga" and stuff like that ).

The way it is written, for a frechman, is agressive, especially when used with written language.

I would imagine they are getting pretty stressed over there. I know if this was my project I would be pulling what is left of my hair out. It must suck to see your pet project get the worst rating of all time on the major fan sites, have old fans comparing your game to a pile of dung, see people buying the game and bailing after a few hours of play and knowing that in a couple of months you will not be able to pay the light bills. That is not a excuse but I can see where he would stress out like that and start baling everyone except himself for this mess. The Mourning Devs went down the same road, look where it got them.
