Desperately Seeking Low Price or Free MMORPG

OK, here is the deal. I have a clan of guys that play Natural Selection (Half-Life Mod). Recently, we got sick of the community and we have been trying to play some MMORPG's. We have found and played a decent amount of them. However, none of them seem to have all the things we want in a game.

Things we want in an MMORPG:

Construction - We played WurmOnline.com, but it is in early alpha and the gameplay is ungodly slow. It took three minutes to chop down a tree, three minutes to start a fire, three minutes to do everything.

Gameplay - Smooth and clean gameplay. We have been playing Priston Tale, very well put together game, everything works pretty smoothly, but no construction, just fighting. Eternal Lands was played, but it was remarkably slow, it took 20 seconds to turn the camera to do a 360.

Technology - We like the idea of tech trees. We would prefer more futuristic technology, but the old medieval tech tree is cool too.

Combat - Don't want the whole game to be combat, but some would be nice. A Tale in the Desert didn't have any and $13.95/month is far too much for that game.

3D Graphics - A must, we didn't like anything that wasn't 3D. The actual graphics don't have to be stunning, but at least decent.

Games played:

Wurm Online
Priston Tale
A Tale in the Desert
Eternal Lands
Mu Online
Project Entropia
Planeshift

We would all prefer free, but if it's a small monthly price we can deal with it.

Please help us, we want suggestions.

I checked Knight Online advertisement in ongamenet.com and says it's free for life in Korean.

Now I don't know what this actually means.

Couple of us got invitation for the beta of this game today. Yet at this stage I can't answer if this game will be free for NA.

I'm gathering as many information as possible for this game.

    --------------

Besides, if you are patient type, wait for Guild Wars, it's a title that will not fit in any of current categories of games. It is definitely a MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game). It has Starcraft or Magic the Gathering type of game strategy concept implemented. It let you manipulate the world around you (building bridges, etc). And most of all it's monthly fee free.

It is a potential candidate to come on top as the Game Of The Year this year. Personally it's my most anticipated game this year.

Acctually i think theres a couple Good free games comming soon, i also read somewhere Guild Wars was free?, i wouldn't be surprized in the future more free mmorpg's and cheaper monthly rates and most people are sick of paying and theres ALOT of competition now, i find myself struggling to choose which game i like most .

Lords Of The Mist - A World of Warcraft guild.

I can't speak for free MMOGs, but Horizons has almost everything you've asked for. Construction is very, very involved and highly rewarding for small guilds of crafters. Plenty of combat, doesn't use a skill tree system, but does allow you to branch into different skillsets with mixtures of class development.

The game is 1 month out of release...they're still working out some issues. But I think it will contain most of what you're looking for. That game definitely is suited to small guilds (clans).

Ianubisi, they come from an FPS, horizons would kill them with boredom.. There is NO, I repeat, NO good cheap or free mmorpgs out, they all suck, and they all bore you fast. A good game you guys would most likely enjoy is SWG, I personally hated it, but it has everything you asked for. It costs 50 bucks + 13 bucks a month, if you guys cant afford that..Then stop playing fkn games and get a job.

Hehe, being an NS player, I found it quite likely that they'd kill themselves after playing Horizons.

But I honestly don't know of any game that has what you want and is cheap/free...if there was, I'd be playing it :)

Stukov, you are in FFT, you were in our channel like a week ago!!!!

Regal, just because we come from an FPS doesn't mean we would have problem with an overhead/3rd person view.  We really enjoy playing Priston Tale, only problem is we wish it had a little more.  Just playing constantly just to level can get boring, the construction and leveling skills besides combat would be fun.

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys. Throw out any MMORPG now. Price no matter I guess.  Most of the ones named off just had crappy gameplay, like Another World, just moved very unsmoothly.

I don't disagree with you that FPS -> MMOG gameplay can be a shock. But given that they want to build, and that seemed a very critical feature, MMOG is about the only place to do that aside from Impressions or Maxis games.

omg both of you missed my point, FPS is fast paced action with player versus player fighting.. Horizons is the most boring game ever made, just kill monsters until you max out and thats it, then what? build a freakin house? These guys would die of boredom in horizons, I strongly suggest you guys wait for Lineage 2,Guild Wars, UXO, Dragon Empires, Dark and Light, something involving pvp. believe me, if you go to a carebear game like horizons you will cry of boredom and say you wasted ALOT of money....even those hardcore crafter fanbois who were saying horizons was so great a month ago, are now quitting.

Funny. I haven't quit. Nobody in my guild of 50+ people, growing every day, has quit.

Regal_TR...just because you don't like the game doesn't mean the game sucks. Sucks for you, maybe...fine, no reason you can't express your opinion. But watch what toes you start to tread on when you toss your opinions around.

Ianubisi, you can be a fanboi of the game all you want, but when you look around and realize the game no longer lags as much as it did a month ago, its not that the patch fixed it, its because no ones around.

You keep plying your fantasy all you like. Horizons is going to be around a long while, whether you like it or not. Don't believe me? In 2 years from now we'll see who was right.

wow, this turned into a flame war

  • StukovStukov Member Posts: 180

Yea it did. Anyways, so under your new requirements, I suppose the 2 I'd say fit in are Horizons or SWG. Both feature combat, crafting, building, etc. SWG has PvP if you're into that, and the crafting isn't bad...chances are I'll be flamed for this, but I think SWG is one of the better MMORPGs out there. Horizons has all that, but it does get boring...though I still play it (Come on, I played ATITD. I mean, if I can play that...)

    And yes, [FFT]Stukov :P

    EDIT: What clan you in?

    Stukov, -NSP-

Most of NSP and our friends, like Chick and sawce have been trying to find a game.

I actually think SWG is an overall good MMO.  It had a rough start but they have made vast improvements and changes to make it an entirely new game.  I would take SWG over Horizons any day.

Hehe, finally someone who agrees with me. And sweet, didn't know you knew chick :P

I dont know anyone mentioned this, cause I ignored the flame war, but for futuristic stuff, with fighting and building and doing quests and everything, and at a pretty cheap price (you don't even have to goto the store to buy it), I would get Anarchy Online. To this day, this is my favorite MMORPG. AO + NW + SL is $29.99 and it costs like $13/m, on-top of that you can just download the game and play a free 7 day trial. Its worth a try.

  • StukovStukov Member Posts: 180
Also an AO player, but they want crafting/buildings it seems. While AO has crafting...its not exactly a big thing :P

  • zewmzewm Member Posts: 4

yeah I know, but its worth checking out, because the gameplay makes up for the lack of building stuff.

  • YordoYordo Member Posts: 831
I've tried out the AO trial....maybe i should do it again :)

AO is a great game...but it fails in two areas: it's sci-fi and "building" things is pretty much a side hobby. Some nice things can be crafted by players, but for the most part droppable loot is exponentially better than crafted gear.

  • Regal_TRRegal_TR Member Posts: 249
Personally, I hated SWG, Played it for 3 boring months and quit, but I would still recommend it over any mmorpg currently out right now, I hear with vehicles and cities its become more fun or whatever, these 2 things dont matter much to me really..Horizons, I was in beta for 2 months, and Ianubisi, I dont argue that the game will be around for a long time, But your going to be playing with 20 other people, have fun though.

  • StukovStukov Member Posts: 180

    21 other people! Heh...

And for SWG, yea...vehicles are pretty sweet. My city was under attack, but our whole PA was across the planet. (Stormtrooper PA...shh..) We all hopped on speeders and went riding back...was cool, and fast ;)
