The EvE online you don't read about

RekindleRekindle Member UncommonPosts: 1,206

Frankly, and to the point: I've yet to see a thread here that truly touches on some of the finer points of this game so here is my attempt.   I have played all the major mmo's and I've been playing them far too long and I'm here to tell you this is one of the best, if not THE BEST MMORPG universe to ever be created.

The strengths of this game is not its NPC combat system  or looking at an asteroid all day.  Don't believe the people who tell you this is Eve online.  The game isn't about grinding mobs so you reach the next level or collecting your purple set of "armor".  Here are a couple elements of the game as I see it (by far not all of them):

My point is this game can be complex and have complex elements that go beyond the average hack and slash kiddie.

Highly intricate market system.

ex 1: People make stuff and players buy it.  You may find item X for 2000 ISK 2 jumps away or the same item for 200isk 10 jumps away.  You may choose to buy the item 10 jumps away but you might have to travel through dangerous space to get it. Or you might decide to play it safe and buy it local.

ex 2: You can buy stuff on market "X" and run it to market "Y"- "Z" jumps away and make an insane profit -- or you might get your ship blown up on the way there and your precious cargo goes bye bye.

Highly intricate combat system (aka rock paper scissors)

ex 1 If you decide to get into a battleship with Large rail turrets you need to examine your optimal range (which depends on the ammo you have in your weapons) For certain situations you may want to fire off from a 30 km distance, in other situations you may need to have weapons equipped for more close range combat (perhaps blasters) because the perhaps NPCS use speed to close in on you and get too close for your weapons to be effective.  You may want to "tank" the ships and get in close but you may or may not have the capicitor to outlast their barrage

ex. 2

You may choose to go fight NPCs that use weapon/ammo that do kinetic and thermic damage. so you slap on special equipment on your ship that helps to compensate for this --- then a player, who is smart, knows you are fighting rats that do that type of damage so he equips weapons/ammo that do other damage types to gank you and your silly newbish ways (like what happened to me).

And my favorite: Highly complex policitcal structures.

There is empire space which is the Trammel of the Eve Universe. Then there is 0.0 space.

Guilds in Eve are called corporations. You join corps as you would a guild.  But, corps affiliate themselves with larger groups called Alliances.  Alliances control the Felluca of the eve universe and alliances compete with one another for control of systems.  Lots of times interesting political events happen.

IMHO -> Playing EvE online and not participating in "Geo-political" structures is lilke playing your 6.1 surround sound speakers on 2 speakers via mono frequency .  You're just not really getting it. Grab a sandwhich and parse through this forum to build an appreciation.  You can go play battle grounds in WoW and beat each other around and then leave the instance but in EvE Alliances can take over "conquerable stations" and claim true sovergity over systems. Alliances betray one another and join up to take on other alliances-- stuff gets blown up and groups eventually weaken until they can't maintain their control.

Overall

This is a dog eat dog universe where the smart eat the stupid. I have been on both ends of that a couple times. When you screw up it hurts. The risk vs reward system is pretty good.  Slowly, I'm leanring not to be stupid.

I think he's refering more towards the topics that get posted.  The majority (cept as of late) are generally whine threads or hate threads.  You generally have to read through an entire hate thread in order to find out the good things about Eve.  He's making it easier on folks...

    I think...

We can agree to disagree, or we can bicker constantly... either way, I'm right.

You realise that now that you've brought up the fact that the forums have been hate free recently that we're going to be inundated with a whole slew of eve-haters ranting about the game.

    I hope your happy.

The genie just got let out of the bottle again. The last time we remarked during a lull in the flamming that this was a nice change the buggers came back that very day! Perhaps if we are wery wery quite they won't notice.

even with the little i've played, i think eve is a great game.

i just need to breakdown, find a corporation and then restart a sub.   or maybe, just start from scratch (of course, after finding a corporation to join).

soooooooo, having said that, is there a place to go where you can find a listing of all the different corps?

sorry, don't mean to really hijack the thread.  i'm not a fan of uber guilds (mainly because it leads to uber guild elitism and raiding).  but those guilds only get a few hundred members.  aren't there a number of corps with thousands of members?

thanks in advance for any info on corp listings!

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

There is a corp recruiting discussion in the corps section of the official website.  That's a good place to look.

if it were a game everyone likes, then you'd have all the wow kids playing it.

    edited to correct typo.

I have been playing Eve for about two months now. I have so far had a pretty decent time of it. While I find it takes forever to get the skills trained, I feel in the end the abilities will be worth it.

It is just complicated enough to be interesting, but not so much that it is unplayable. The web interface is amazing also. You can access your characters stats and stats to every item in the game from it.

    Great job and good game.

Lol sorry if I was confusing what I meant was an ffa game will never be big in NA and I happen to like ffa games so I'm quite happy with the way eve is.  A niche game that is very enjoyable for some but disliked alot by many others.

Anyone who actually has 'dood' in their name automatically fails at life. Move out of your parents' basement, lose the 'I BEAT ANOREXIA' t-shirt, and get a job.

Very nice post you got there :)
I'm not playing EVE (yet?) so that post helped me to understand many things that I did not know yet.
I'm looking forward to get EVE soon.
    Thanks for your post.

Eve-online is like drinking beer for your first time as a kid,.It Taist horrible and its hard to beleave enyone likes it,but the second time it seems to get better, and better, but to much will make you sick.

Ill have to say eve-online is the best I have played, and Iv been around a long time to,. been in and out of alot of games, and nothing is as deep as eve-online.Im not a big Sci-fi fan so i tend to get bord and log out from time to time to seek a Medievil type of game.

War is "real" in Eve,no game comes close.Alliances of 100"s have fallen, some rise from the ash's and some stay a part of eve history never to be reborn. The ingame politics/roomers/spying/news is like no other game.

its simple,. you need a change? sick of loot based games? sick of restricted pvp games?sick of level grinding games? sick of games where players have no effect on the ingame enviroment?

then give eve-online a try,.and get ready for something new.

Edit:shadowbane may hold true and be just as deep as eve,but it didnt hold my intrests all that well.

I just wanted to say that that's the perfect analogy for EVE..lol

EVE's mature community has yet to be matched in any other game I've played. Even Second Life, but it's not really an MMO. The help channel are full of volunteers (Rookie Help is,anyway)

I fully intend to hook up my bank account to EVE as soon as my holiday is over; it seems to have everything I want. Outdoor PvP, a risk-filled mining system, guild wars, reputation, no levels..........drool!

Let's keep the immature people away from EVE....they don't last long anyway.

Considering I didn't like Elite,I'm shocked to like EVE.
