I'm employed. 9 hours a day. I have friends...I see them at least twice a week. AND I love raiding, grouping, and appretiate the Corpse Run/Travel time mechanics.
Anyone who claims that these types of MMOs aren't for people with employment and "Real Lives" just don't have the attention spans necissary.
My mother is like this with Movies. We'd rent something when I was a child, start to watch it...and about 15 minutes into the film, she'd -=have=- to get up and do something...not that the something needed doing, but you get what I mean.
What I would suggest to you, if you're job and friends are interfering with your play...
#1 Find a New Job closer to home. The modern lifestyle has all but killed leizure activity, and it's a crying shame. If you can't enjoy life and do the things you want to do, life isn't worth living.
#2 Make/Find/Force friends that will play the the games you love. I've never understood why people insist on surrounding themselves with people that don't enjoy the same passions.

Definitely for niche hardcore gamers. . . I just don't know that there are many of them. Honestly, I don't think as many people would have played EQ if there were another option available - and by the time Vanguard comes out they will be plentiful.
What really concerns me though, is the cruddy state the game is in. Hopefully, the one good thing about Sigil selling out to SOE will be that they have time to finish their game.

Elikal.. It sounds to me that WOW would be more to your liking..Its the easiest MMO out there for simple minded people to enjoy..But its also somewhat fun as well until u hit level 60.. uwouldnt like the end game cause most of it probably would be a timesink in your life..
Everquest was the greatest MMO ever released and half of the game was a timesink, basically getting from point a to point b or camping a certain mob for days just to get a piece of armor or weapon u wanted.. While people complained about running around for 20 minutes, and camping mobs for 24 straight hours,it was still the most addicting MMO ever released... Vanguard seems to be following in EQ's footsteps mainly because the creators of EQ are working for Sigil... I still believe Vanguard will even top EQ as the greatest MMO ever released.. But,thats just my opinion, along with thousands of other people..
Personally,I'm glad u think Vanguard will suck..Thats one less whinner and carebear crybaby playing this game..

Don't get me wrong, I will probably buy and play Vanguard for a little while but thats just it, it will only be a little while, because I am quite sure the time that is needed to really progress in the game will be greater than I have to give.
This game will probably have a limited appeal because of that. It would be great if I was still in highschool, unemployed or whatnot but that isn't the case.
I can't make my life revolve around a game anymore, its just not possible.
I don't know how people with a job, friends (out of game) and a significant other can possible commit the requisite amount of time to a game such as this.
All those people who reply to people asking questions with "This game is not for you" are right, this game is for those with lots of time to kill.
I truly miss having that kind of free time.
Think about it, the average person in my part of the world works 8 hour days, takes 45 min to get to and from work.
Thats waking up at 7am leaving for work at 8:15, getting home by 5:45, gotta do chores, cook, spend time with ur wife/gf
Weekends maybe you can get one of those days to spend 6 hrs or so on the comp, but weeknights most people could only get on for about an hour at most, just long enough to do a corpse run
Especially if its going to be a grouping intensive game, we all know how long it can take to get a good grp going.... hell just finding a healer could take an hour.
Just my two cents.
Like I said tho I will play it, if for no other reason that its a huge seamless world to explore.
You will be able to advance in Vanguard with a limited play schedual, and soloing is possible. But if you expect to have everything that everone else does and advance as fast as they advance while only putting in a fraction of the time, then this won't be the game for you. If you don't mind not being the first to do everything and playing the game at your own pace, then this MIGHT be the game for you even if you have a limited schedual.
I realize the game is still viable for those with busy schedules as long as WHEN they play, they have a considerable amount of time to play.
My point was, this game probably won't be the type that you can log in for just an hour here and there, it would more likely be the sort where the minimum time might be about 3 hrs.

No, if you play a class that can solo well, you can pop right in and get some experience. There is also crafting and diplomacy which are pretty much exclusively solo content. But if you want to group, it will take a certain amount of time to be worth the effort, but that would be no different than any other game when it comes to grouping.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I only work 6 months a year.
Yeah, I'm not making 25 bucks and hour, but I'm also not spending 150 dollars when I want to go out on a weekend, and I can buy a house with a few acres for under 75k.
I laugh at your part of the world. And in 4 months I'm going to have some SERIOUS time to kill.
Well, Sigil was created by the guys from the old EQ1 crew. That should give them some credibility. But yeah, after D&L i aint preordering anything untill the beta (free beta, not D&L style paid beta) is out and I see some reviews or better yet play it myself. I strongly hope and support VSOH at the moment, the game looks great... theoretically.

Reading from their description, diplomacy will play an important part. Some content will be only accessible through diplomacy. It will be interesting to see how they will implement it. Im guessing its gonna be hard to create enough diplomacy content to make diplomay a primary skill, I think they will make it a secondary skill so you can be either a crafter of sort, or diplomat. I hope they make diplomats more productive then dancers in SWG.

Yeah, there was one article that said that (from MMOChart.com ....but the guy admited on forums later on that he never saw Diplomacy demo'd, so he's just working on hearsay.)
The official word is that The basic funcionality of Diplomacy is in but all the cool stuff isn't yet or is being put in right now, and that I think it'll be in (...and functional?) by the time they start Beta 3. Then they'll be tweaking it during Beta 3 along with alot of other stuff.
The trend that we have seen over the last few years is to create MMOs with faster play. Since time is how you can control a MMO faster play may not be the best. Normally faster equals easier since to get faster play you need to limit time drains in the game. You also see faster leveling and an assembly line style of equipment gathering where everyone follows the same path and all end up looking about the same in stats for their level. An extreme example of this in a game was the super popular Diablo II. This game had a huge player base very happy with its extreme playing speed, one that I found boring.
WoW is a game that has a huge player base and is very fast play, and even though a few million might love that game there are 500 thousand to a million that have quit it. One must asked what is it that the people like me who never played WoW and the players that stopped playing do not like about that game. I am sure the fast play is the main reason. I for one would like to be viewed on my server as one of the top players of my class. In a game where 95% of the server is all the same this can't be done no matter how much time or effort you put into it. As I stated time is the main controlling point in a game.
Take death as an example. You can make it mean little or you can make it hurt. How do you reward poor play or extreme risky attitude when death means nothing? How do you give classes meaningful abilities to over come death penalties when those penalties are already so small that abilities to over come them mean almost nothing? To be unique in a MMO your levels/AA/equipment etc is what sets you apart from others, good or bad. How can you do this when equipment is easy to get and everyone follows the same path to get it, and levels come so fast that 90% of the server are all in the same zones trying to level at the same time. I'm not looking for super new ideas in a MMO.
It seems all the ones coming out are all trying to create a corner stone on some new MMO idea. I would like a MMO that has some new ideas, and takes successful ideas from other games to create a great MMO. Add in a level if difficulty that spreads out the population in levels and equipment and I think the 500 thousand to 1.5 million MMO players that are waiting for a good MMO might find a home here.
Donkey Kong has sold 35 million, but then I never played it or desired to play it. Does this make donkey kong better than all MMOs? To the OP, sometimes to take a step back away from the mainstream is what others are looking for. I do not think you are one of them...

Good points. However, I will dare to correct you, IMO people started quitting WoW not becuase of its fast paced gameplay, but rather becuase they reached the end too quickly. I personally never reached high end game - I love rolling out different classes and play them whenever i get bored with my main. However, WoW isnt a big (geographically) game, so this fast paced gaming is making it look even smaller. After rolling out 6-7 chars, I had trouble finding unique zones to level in. The solution to this imo is to keep fast paced gameplay, but make the game HUGE... Imagine WoW (if you played it) having landmass the size of D&L, but not empty landmass. Quests, wars, fortresses, PvP, stores, army vs army combat, aerial/naval combat... if a game can manage to fill that huge void with content, but keeping a fast paced and rich combat style, we could have another WoW-ish hit.
In the case of VSOH, i dont mind it being a bit slower in gaining experience, or being a bit more group oriented AS LONG as I am not restricted by it. I do like to solo most of the time, and even if im not able to get to the top level by soloing, I will accept that. As long as I have an option to choose my own gameplay, my own gamestyle at my own pace and at my own time.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

um... so you're saying it was too fast-paced?
people started quitting because of 2 things:
1. they finished all the content in a few months, and blizzard has waited a record 2 years to release an expansion. big mistake.
2. blizzard has perhaps the most horribly botched end-game gear system ever. yes you should absolutely have to raid to get the best gear, but you shouldn't have to repeatedly raid the same place over and over to get that one drop you're eligible to roll for. it should be a quest like in EQ1, where you raid, kill the boss, and get an epic reward for killing him the first time, period.

It wasnt the prime reason. I guess I should explain what I meant:
First of all, by faced paced I mean several factors, combat, advancement etc. WoW has above average volume of content (in general) but due to faster then average progression through levels that volume doesnt feel that big - people usualy go through it fast, without realy noticing it. In comparison, in EQ, even low level quests often were so complicated, took so long to complete that they felt like a chore ( remember all those /ooc WTB crushbone belts ). Those 2 are opposite extremes.
Second, WoW world is also above average, but due to easy transportation, it also feels smaller then it is.
What I was suggesting is to keep the fast paced combat, advancement, BUT, make the world bigger, add much more combat and increase max level. That way each level does not feel like a chore and you actually FEEL progression. A fairly good example of this is Horizons, where u could get to level 50-70 fairly quickly. While level 70 was not the top level, but you would see results of your progress more often. Of course Horizons did not have much content to fill the void of wide level range, thats why it failed.
Thats why Im hoping VSOH will be fast paced like WoW, but with MUCH more content to fill in.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
Originally posted by dink However, this small minority of hardcore gamers are fiercely loyal, and they could pull off a profit from them with a game that caters to their desires, and the political and crafting systems, if they are pulled off well, could pull in other people who will endure the hardcore game mechanics just to try out something new. . . but not if the animations look like ass, the graphics look old compared to older MMOs, and the world is a featureless empty shell with more wasteland than content. Hopefully, the deal with SOE will give them time to get the game working.
You talking about D&L or Vanguard in the text I highlighted yellow? ...
I'd be interested to hear more of your opinion of Vanguard from E3. Throughout the thread your posts have been some of the only ones that have seemed to approach the 'this is what I know, from experience' aspect, rather than 'this game is going to rock cos the FAQ says' etc.
I understand others will say 'I can't say anything cos I am in the BETA', and as to whether they are or not is up to debate, of course.
So, if you have the time, an honest, straightforward assessment of how you perceived this game to be would be really appreciated. You're not breaking any NDA and would be talking about something you saw that the press etc all saw. And ignore the fanbois when you do so. They will deny everything you have to say unless it includes the phraze 'Vanguard is the rox0rz' in each sentence.
"(The) Iraqi people owe the American people a huge debt of gratitude." - George W Bush. Oh. My. God.
You can't judge VG yet. Saying it's terrain is featureless and without mobs and complaining about the animations and otherwise saying things about the graphics only show your ignorance. VG's animations that they had at E3 were placeholders. The next beta phase will have the newest version of the animation system as well as the complete animation set. Most of the terrain in the beta test isn't complete yet. Lots of work remains to be done, but much more of it is finished in in-house versions. Additionally, effects like shadows and HDR haven't been enabled yet. Maybe read the VG website and forums before flying off the handle, k?

After speaking to Cindy Bowens from Sigil games directly last night during an interview, I want to try to shed some light on promises vs. reality brought up in this thread that I spoke to her about lastnight.
I personally haven't seen the game in action. So I dont know what the animations are going to look like. I have heard good and bad reviews on them, and I will reserve judgement. The graphics (From the screenies I have seen) look no better or worse then DDO, WoW, EQ2. So essentially on par with todays MMOs. Its all about personal taste for graphics.
The Dimplomacy system is in fact going to be in place as a viable way to level. There are three spheres (ways) to gain XP, grinding, dimplomacy and crafting I believe (I will have to check my transcrpit notes later). From the way it was described, there will be equal oppertunities for advancement regardless of what sphere you follow.
As to the game being for "Hard Core" gamers. Content wise, sure, I can see that. Show me a game that isn't for kids that doesn't have "Hard Core Content". Too many people want their game on a silver platter. Some people find that fun. "Go go go, Woo I am UBBAH... OKay now I am bored, I got here too quick." is common in todays super easy, spoonfed world. A game like Vanguard will be a refreshing challenge for a lot of people.
As to the SoE deal. SoE is only going to have a hand in distribution and marketing. All game process, and play will remain with Sigil Online Games. Love it or hate it, they made a business decision. One that I think will help rather then hinder the future of Vanguard Saga of Heros.
yea all this SoE stuff is about as silly as people putting a $ in Microsoft. if you genuinely believe SoE or MS are giant evil entities bent on screwing people out of their money you're delusional.

True that..............but I wont spend my money on any game that in some way will make money for SOE. They did bad business with SWG and will never get another dime from me...tv's, stereos...or games. The company can rot in hell for all I care.

Donkey Kong has sold 35 million, but then I never played it or desired to play it. Does this make donkey kong better than all MMOs? To the OP, sometimes to take a step back away from the mainstream is what others are looking for. I do not think you are one of them...
Good to hear.

*edit heh Apparently my sig already works*
