Is it REALLY that bad now?
I'm actually downloading the 10 day free trial right now, I hadn't realised how drastically SWG has changed since I last played (i didn't really enjoy it back then, tbh). I've been reading through the forums, and the sheer amount of whining is quite increadible (not to mention hillarious). If anything it simply makes me want to play the game to try it myself even more!
I'm thinking that the only reason the NGE has been such a massive flop was because the majority of SWG players had to grind for months, or years to unlock a Jedi character. Now, Sony decide to allow anybody to start as a Jedi! Sure, if I were one of the guys that spent ages unlocking one, I'd be pissed off too. But I'm not, I've always wanted to play a Jedi but could never be arsed to spend that much time on it. But now I can be And to be honest I'm quite excited about it!
Has anybody here got anything atall positive to say about SWG as it is now? Or is it all bad? I'm not saying I think SWG is amazing now or anything, I'm going to start playing it with an absolutely clear mind. I'm not going to think about how the game was pre CU/NGE, I'm going to take it as a brand new game, as though it was just released, and I shall base my opinion on it then, not on what it's like compared to the older game.

However i tried the game after the changes for the first time and it wasn't for me. As far as positives go It was stable and I suppose you could say it was driven by static NPC quest(although I prefer playing games were other players have power and you can obtain it yourself, and games were the community provides those things). So one of those positives is a negative for me , the game didn't provide what I was after and that is a game like what it was, even if it had its faults I would've renewed my subscription. Even really large bugs, I would've hung around for awhile if the game was like it was supposed to be and would've seen first hand if they were getting fixed but even though the "new" SWG was stable I left before I renewed and didn't really ever plan on renewing after playing it but thats my taste.
No, it's not REALLY that bad :P
I've been playing SWG since day 1 and I still really enjoy my time playing it. I'm part of an active guild which is full of great people and we do alot of fun things in the game While the servers aren't the busiest they've ever been, they're far from dead (at least the ones I've checked out anyway).
Those that don't enjoy it anymore have their reasons, and they're all valid. However, it's no reason that you shouldn't try it out. I'm under the belief that if you find a game fun, then play it. Everyone has a different view of what fun is. Hell, I don't find WoW fun in anyway, yet 6million people apparantly do lol.
In the core game, you have the Legacy quests that will get you to level 40. Unfortunately, they are still adding these "leveling quests" so if you manage to catch up to them you'll need to either get an expansion (which isn't exactly bad, I found them fun ) or level the old way. The legacy quests are ontop of all the others that are in the game, so you do have quite a bit to do. There's also space which is like a whole extra game.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
SWG is still unique in a many ways. Resource gathering, crafting system , space and ground combined, player housing, entertainers, visual character customization, sandbox maps, twitch combat and being Star Wars are some of the fairly unique features of SWG.
Oh stfu and cut the crap already. SWG "NGE" doesn't come close to pre-CU. That's the fucking fact and 200k subs are there to prove it.
EDIT: If I want to play WoW-like game... I will just play the real thing - WoW.
Buy it cheap on Amazon and give it a go for a month before you decide to cancel erm I mean wether you like it or not.
To tell you the truth though it is really THAT bad in my opinion. Servers are very lightly populated for what a Star Wars MMO after 3 years of being live should be. In fact playerbase is well below average for an MMO you have to pay a subscription for. I'd describe SWG as "Star Wars Battlefront Beta Online" and that's being kind. I would mention the company that maintains it and give you my opinion on their performance however I've been threatened with a banning if I speak ill of them again so I won't say anymore than that.
Just don't subscribe until that first month is finished mate, either way you can't lose wether you love it or hate it. However after the month is up why not try EVE-Online www.eve-online.com you can get a proper trial not some instanced rubbish that hides the true game from you.

Every thing u said it's pre-CU SWG except the twitch combat (thank god). Atm game is shit and if you say anything else that's a pure lie.
Only ones that like SWG atm are those newbs that always wanted a Jedi but just couldnt be arsd to do it.
And for the recod: I never had Jedi nor I ever wanted Jedi. I had my house, my shop and couple of happy costumers. That's all I needed to be entertained and to log in every day. Not some icon crap.

Um, everything I mentioned is in the game as it is now.
I suggest not running ahead of yourself and making bold assumptions about people as it usually makes you look like a fool None of my main characters are Jedi, one is a Medic and the other is an Armoursmith/Weaponsmith. As an armoursmith I'm kept extremely busy...many days I spend 6 hours or so filling orders, stocking my vendor, doing factory runs on components, checking stock levels, etc. I guess you could add "Running a business" to the list of unique things SWG has too
U really think everybody was a jedi before NGE? hardly...
the combat system just got changed for the worse (trying to make it from a mmorpg into a screwed up MMOFPS, note I love MMOFPS but this style is none of both). And so did the crafting game wich was BRILLIANT (wasn't affected, much, by the CU and NGE) got deleted... (a lot of professions got merged into the 4 artisan professions that there are now).
And a lot of the other professions got removed aswell... (creature handler, bio engineer. Rifle vs Carbine vs Pistol, TKA, Fencer, Pikeman, Swordsman...)
While really there's not a lot of new gameplay nor any new content, while diversifying characters got thrown into one big pot with 6 or is it 7 classes now? instead of 32 where u could pick skills from different professions and be unique!
Positive stuff:
- it's StarWars and the quests got a lot better if u start a new character, if u have existing characters u don't get to experience anything new for content.
Things that should have gotten better but aren't:
- lag, it seems they have just lowered server capacity, performance still ain't optimal
-fps issues, I could play this game on my Geforce 256 (the beta low fps sure...). I then built the about best system available at the time -> amd 2800+, nForce 2 mobo, FX 5900ultra 256mb and all was good. When I play it now I get loads of slowdowns (30 fps all okay, suddenly 1-2fps) etc because the game isn't optimized (I doubt it would run much better on a newer card since it would have trouble with the slowdowns aswell).
-Combat, its just hold your mouse over target and hold or click the left mouse button, then choose one out of eight skills on your taskbar (yes it can only hold 8 now!!! it used to be like 30) and trigger it with the right mouse button. basically spam all u got...). It's very boring and the task of moving the mouse to target really doesn't make it anymore interactive ...
- The community events died down, and so did the SOE events. No more official storyline events (they only lasted till about 7 months after release anyway) etc

CH,BE and TKA are really the only professions that got removed.

No new content? Check out the legacy quest series. That's a few weeks worth of content. As for diversity, in the next Chapter professions start getting skill trees (3 in total) that each have different skills. You earn Skill Points as you can then spend to get a new box. Kinda like pre-nge.

These quests are also available to those of us that aren't new to the game. Talk to the Twi'lek guy outside the Eisley starport

SWG was built with tomorrow's PC's in mind, or that's the official line The engine scales to your hardware, so as you upgrade the engine also upgrades with it to take advantage of your new hardware. My dual 6600GT's run it fairly decently at a FR of around 25-30.

Goes deeper then that. Taking advantage of terrain can be beneficial (ie, if you're low on health and your heal timer is still going, run behind a solid object or down a bank to escape the fire for a bit). There's also the stats that improve your abilities and defenses (glancing blow, critical hits, elemential criticals, etc).

No events? Heh, look at this long list http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/en_US/players/events.vm . CSR's will also spontaneously do both PvE and PvP events. Next week the Restuss event starts which at core is a combination of the Cries of Alderan events and the Village phases. The end result is Restuss (on Rori) is completely blowen up leaving the buildings collapsed and destroyed.

Right, melee is pointless. the point is lots of people played SWG because u didn't have to choose a class. It became what everyone did NOT look for in this game... So pointless having to delete your character if u want to specialize into an other profession, it was more realistic beforeWhile really there's not a lot of new gameplay nor any new content, while diversifying characters got thrown into one big pot with 6 or is it 7 classes now? instead of 32 where u could pick skills from different professions and be unique!

cool, the next chapter yay... this game is 3 years old. WoW had this from launch. Don't u get it that we are playing Playstation 3 beta?

Cool, now I can get a shitty lvl 5 reward. How about quests for the lvl 80 to adapt?

You're full of shit man, this games graphics haven't improved one bit since release. The code just isn't as clean because the textures get loaded in spikes (where u get fps drops), this must have gotten in by patching but not restructuring the code.
Also the loading was never good in populated cities, it would just keep loading till everyone was on the screen. Instead of loading at the computer's rate. Not that they do anything about it...

yeah, now check the European servers...
there are still a few player run events, but they are nowhere near the scale of frequence that they used to be.
I think its cool that u can enjoy the game like this, I guess u didn't fall in love with the original game as others did. The current game just can't match what it ever was, and SOE definitely isn't giving a damn about elder players (thought u could keep players busy for 5 years collecting profession badges didn't u?)
Face it the new quests aren't anything like the ones that were at the begin, those were cool with faction vs faction quests etc. They could better make a singleplayer starwars game with the kind of quests they are implementing now, it would be much more immersive than the static world of SWG (well static except for resource shifts)
Btw, if u enjoy SWG so bad, go play!! I know I'm not going around on forums when I'm hooked...
Face it, its had its glory. and PS2 players are easily statisfied :P
as I said Helldog, I'm going to start playing SWG as a new game, I'm not going to have the old game in mind atall. I won't be basing my opinion on whether the new SWG is better or worse than the old SWG, i'll be basing it on what the game is like now, and how fun it is for a newcomer.
I've been supporting the game since day 1 on forums just like these, pre-cu, cu and now in the NGE. Personally, grinding new professions was never appealing to me, I only changed my professions twice and that was when the CU hit and then again with the NGE.
Don't like the new quests then don't do them All the old quests are still available as well, they weren't removed. Anyway, this post isn't about comparing the various states of SWG, but talking about how SWG is now and what it currently has. The OP is new to SWG and likely has little concern with how the game once was
At this hour I do my crafting, and while waiting on factories, shuttles, crafting tools I take the time to browse the forums and post.
You win this time Obraik but I'll turn the next one to the dakside MUAH HAH HAH!
/runs out the door howling like a crazy man whilst wildly flailing his arms about in every direction!

Obraik doesn't win. Hohbein loses, until he discovers for himself just how delusional Obraik is and cancels on his own. Sorry to see you waste your time with this steaming pile Hohbein, there's so many better games out there, like Pong.

Lets bring the whole SWG forum over here for a party
Delusional would be me saying the OP will love the game and it'll be the best game they've ever played. I'm simply stating how I find the game to help him/her decide if they want to try the game.
If you like a game geared for 13 year olds then its right up your alley. There is very few quests. It isnt like EQ2 or WoW that has multiple storylines and thousands of quests. There is a very static storyline plus a few off shoots at later levels but its still very static. Also honestly I found the storylines added with RotW and after to be very predictable and simplestic. But it is aimed at kids now.
As for trust it also depends on how much you trust SOE and LEC. They have lied continuously to the community since day 1. So if you just keep in your mind that everything they say is a lie first you will be alot less upset at them when they do lie and surprised (rarely) when they speak the truth. And just remember they could change the whole game again without a moment's notice. So anything you do with your character could become moot in just a few weeks. They have done it twice already.
But its up to what your looking for. So try it out.
Kai
EDIT: Oh and Obraik, Ranger and Scout is also professions they removed.
The NGE killed off most SWG players. It took away crafting, and made every person the same. What made SWG so unique was the template leveling system. Not many people actually had the same template.
BTW, Perma death was revoked after the first CU. They also were running 200k exp loss per death, but that was easy to get back in a spinning group. Also, THe economy was one of the only player driven economies in a game to date. It was well thought out, and worked extremely well IMO, just SoE messed it up by changing how crafters operated.
Resource gathering: Not unique
Crafting system: Not unique
Space Combat: yes, this is a nice feature
Player Housing: Not unique
entertainers: yes, this is different
Visual Character Customization: how is this unique? Ever play CoH/CoV, EQ2, or pretty much every other game ever?
Twitch Combat: It's not twitch. It's point and hold a button down to spaz out like a freaking moron.
Sandbox maps: Ummm...if you are referring to an open area accessable to all players...that's about as old as it gets.
This game USED to be unique. Now it's a sorry excuse for a console game. Nice try though.
