Is this some kind of a joke? Did they seriously buy them out?

EA is partly responsible for killing UO off, their track record isn't squeaky clean either.

As a former Earth and Beyond player I just want to offer my condolences to those of you who play and enjoy DAOC. Enjoy it now cause as soon as EA takes over things, it's going to be runied. Just for reference here is EA's MMO track record:

    Motor City Online
    Earth and Beyond
    Ultima Online
    The Sims Online

Sorry I know how you feel, I've been there.

    Not a joke.

But it's not all bad. EA has a hell of a reputation for MMOs, sure, but they've got a few good devs under their belt that they've apparantly treated well. What'll determine DAoC and WAR's fate is how greedy EA gets for the success of Warhammer.

Take a wait and see approach. It'll be evident how things are going for Mythic post-takeover in Q2 '07. Plenty of game time to be had until then.

Warhammer and DAoC are screwed, because I guarantee you their sole reason for purchasing Mythic is getting a big ol' slice of that WoW/Vivendi pie.

I feel for you guys, I really do. WAR was like a miracle on the horizon to me, and now it's been almost completely squelched.

Aw common guys, we cant just assume that DAoC and WAR are gonna be killed. Im sure the DEVs will be the same and evrything , it will be called EA Mythic, not just EA.

EA will be more like publisher and marketer for them, since Mythic has been using all the money to development. But yeah, hopefully they don't let them touch WAR and DAoC and don't make them rush WAR out.

It has been said all current employees of Mythic will stay.

    You forgot Battletech 3025
E&B i still remember when they pulled most of the devs back in beta to work on UOX.
Given EA's track record with online games Warhammer will either get canned in a few months or else be released in pretty much the same stage it is in now. Not going to be a pretty sight.

I love how one little article creates havoc.  Just because theres a merger does not mean all the current goodies are automatically being flushed down the toilet.

I am willing to bet that DAOC will continue sailing it's course and WAR will gain a new slogan at the loadup screen.  I bet on it.

One other note on the merger.  WAR beta comes out at the end of this year.  Now check this from the article:

The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, and is expected to close during EA’s second quarter of fiscal 2007. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

    That's about a year away.

    EA - gaming graveyard

Memorys of Westwood and what good EA would do to it re-surface.

RIP DAoC, may the end come quickly and painless (tho I doubt that will happen, EA will suck it for whats its worth)

The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

That is if they want to stay. EA is not exactly well known for keeping employees and developers. I admire your optimism. However EA's track record for buying companies and taking over their MMO projects is horrible. It's very clear they made this move to get ahold of Warhammer to take a bite out of WoW's dominance. This is bad in every way.

    1) EA will insist on making Warhammer EXACTLY like WoW.
    2) EA will expect Warhammer to have the initial interest to be just like it was for WoW. When it's not, they will cut resources and not wait for it to build a folllowing.

EA is about buying licenses and then pumping out and pumping up boxed games with the short-sighted initial sale in mind only.

This business plan has failed or is failing with all their MMOGs now.  It will also likelly fail with any new ones they purchase.  The problem is not the developers or the MMOG concepts themselves, but the EA business model, development process, and ignorant boxed-sales executives.

If history is any example, in a short time, EA will try to enforce these franchise boxed sales business models onto their new MMOGs, causing the real talent to split, which will then be replaced by EA's own poor boxed developers.

Thats really sad.  DAoC devs were the greatest and would listen to the players suggestions.  Every week they would have a poll with what you would like to see new in the next patch...

    Down with EA

I don't care what kind of candy he offers, you don't get in the fat guy's van.  There's only one way this can end.  Ask the people who work at Westwood.... oops, nope, there is no Westwood.  Then talk to someone at Origin.... oops again.   However good a deal Mark Jacobs thinks he got, his company will be a memory within a year.

As for WAR, I would not worry.  WAR will mostly if not completly be done prior to the accusition.  Further, WAR is a licensed product.  They must work with GW to ensure that GW is happy.  So, if EA tries to take the game in a wrong direction, they can say that EA Mythic is in violation of the terms of the contract and pull the license.

I've been loyal to Mythic since what feels like the begining of time, having played splatterball, magestorm, and DAoC. It makes me VERY angry that Mythic would jump into something like this, what the hell are they thinking? You would have thought that they would at least wiki EA before they jump onboard with them. This is very sad news indeed.

According to the Press Release from EA, Mythic will remain the way it is. It will just no longer be independent.

This is good because it will allow EA Mythic to compete better with EQ2 and WoW. Allowing more features and better support to the dev team.

I am looking forward to this.

Which, I think, is at the root of all the hysteria.  Something that is no longer independent is no longer in control of its own destiny.

I think EA's track record speaks for itself, just as does SOE's.  There was an announcement not to far back about SOE and Sigil (developers of Vanguard: Saga of Heros) getting in bed with each other, and there was a similar outcry because of SOE's manifest destruction of the Star Wars Galaxies franchise for some mythic "broader audience" appeal.  EA also has a poor reputation in the industry for handling MMO's, although perhaps for reasons differing from SOE's.

It's now a very interesting situation.  We should start a pool to wager on which company -- SOE or EA -- first succeeds at hosing the spirit of their supposedly "untouchable" franchises, Vanguard and Warhammer.

Yup, they pull the license. Then what? Oh, they pulled the license that means we won't be able to play WAR.

Exactly. EA in the mix now isn't really a good thing when you look back what happen to Ultima Online, Ultima Online 2, Ultima X: Odyssey (still refused to buy or pay for EA games as a result of this), The Sims Online, Earth and Beyond. They've allowed these games to die, killed them before being released even though they were great. Hell UXO was said to be extremely stable and playable in it's late alpha stage then some released MMORPGs at the time and even now I would be. Even with a ton of interest in E&B they killed it. They've refused to even allow Ultima Online to change and grow and as a result we have the mess and horrible coding that was introduced almost 10 years ago.

This is not a good thing. If they take a hands off approach maybe but judging by what they've done with Origin, Maxi, etc that isn't likely to happen and I seee EA either letting DAoC die by forcing the team to do other things or just closing it down.

    I agree with you here..

I feel sorry if EA ever ruined gameplay for people in the past though. However, I dont have a bad track record with EA at all. I just usually buy their FPS games anyways.

All I remember is buying their sport games for my xbox and their Battlefield Game Series for my PC.
