wow. stunned. Was already thinking of letting go of my DAOC acounts, will do a wait and see though but honestly not sure how it will go. I agree that if EA stays outta Mythics way, it would possibly be a great thing.
Rheanon DAOC is a game SOE is the company that runs multiple online games, you really can't compare them. I played SWG from the start and SOE did a great job keeping up the game but screwed up when they abandened the original game and did a Combat upgrade to make the game closer to EQ and WoW. To this day their servers are still strong but who cares when you do not have people to play on them.
DAOC is a good game and Mythic even updated the graphics to keep up with other MMO's coming out. I never played UO but from all my friends that have played other MMO's I hear the same thing. The game they are playing starts off great then after a bunch of nerfs and changes players get pissed and move onto the next big MMO.
It's a matter of money, not on Mythic parts but EA. They see Blizzard and WoW just plowing ahead and figured they want to get in on that, Warhammer makes sense because out of all the new games coming out it has a big fan base. They are not going to try and push a older MMO because people talk and old players don't like coming back.
Really I hope everything works out for EA/Mythic and Warhammer, I think Warhammer will be better then WoW but never claim the same about of players.
the only mmo that EA has that they developed is Sims Online and that title speaks for itself. EA has no clue on how to manage MMO's they'll kill Mythic. Warhammer's future is bad now that EA has control over it. DAOC is doomed as well.
sorry to see it happen. Mythic WAS a good company.
Today is a sad day for me... I've sworn never ever to send one penny near any pockets of EA.... So I've kept true to myself and canceled my DAOC accounts. This also means I wont be playing Warhammer.... Something I was looking forward greatly...
Man this Suxs I really had high hopes for WAR but now............ im not so excited Y would you sell out with such high hopes for your up coming game I mean they've topped the hype list for a while and it had such unique ideas for a game but noooooo........... EA has to get involved why mythic oh why oh why.... whelp there goes the neighborhood and whelp another good looking game done shot down before it could even have a chance to stand total flop is my prediction...
Sorry EA good sports games crappy mmorpgs....
Oh and some one help me find the spellchecker on this web sight can’t seem to find it LOL
I guess we can only hope that EA keeps their noses out of Mythic's business. I don't see that happening, but if it does. This could work out ok.
EA was being smart. They realized that games like WoW and FFXI are in their decline and just about everyone is waiting for "The next big thing." And with all the hype surrounding WAR, they realized that they could be a part of "The next big thing."
I'm guessing that they try to push up the release of WAR a bit. Because they seem to have a habbit of rushing things. Not to mention they want to get the game to the public while the timing is right.
This will either go very well or very badly, not much of an in-between. We can just hope it goes very well.
this isn't good for mythic kiss any games good bye from them. EA ruined EnB when they purchased Westwood in development and failed to do many things with EnB that they said they would. The destroyed the development team and put little or no effort into the game or even advertising it. They cancelled EnB and since then most of the old westwood people left to form a company called Petroglyph i think.
This is as bad as SOE trust me.

Everyone is bitching about EA but look what this has actually done in the market. More than likely it saved mythic now they have deep pockets. EA makes ome good games like BF2, sports games etc. I don't think they want to jeopardize the position Warhammer has built as the next big thing. I know they have been looking for a MMO to really grab the market. Maybe they learned from the past MMO expierence.
On the other hand this has put a big strain on other developers to produce quality in there products and get them out there. I know Blizzard is taking notice of this. It is a viable business threat to them and now they have the money to make it even more so. IF Warhammer fails so what it made blizzard stand up and produce. There is alot of MMO's coming out soon that look promising. I for one love WOW would hate to see it go but would love to have it made better.
for anyone who thinks EA will help Mythic, just look at EA's history. also, look at the quality in the products they release now. you will see that EA is only looking at profit not quality. profit comes first, the closing of Westwood is also another foolish thing they did. just do research and you'll see the truth.
OMG, the sky is falling! Everyone hit the cancel button and rate DAoC with a 1!! How dare they try to keep competitive and afloat with Blizzard and $OE in the market!
It amazes me that everyone comments on how great of a company Mythic is and how well they run their games...
... these are the same people who now just ship at the ANNOUNCEMENT of EA aquiring them. Read the press release.. they're still going to operate under the EA Mythic name and all the employees and developers are staying.
At least wait and see what happens... give Mythic the credit they deserve!

As I said, its hard to remain positive after what they pulled with UO. I can understand that the company was failing, but for EA to come in and wreck a working formula? I have no faith in their management abilities.
EA murdered Earth & Beyond, and they killed Ultima X: Odyssey before it even got started. I hope the Mythic employees can manage to keep their jobs and continue to convince EA to not close DAoC.
I've never been one to say I "love" or "hate" something so vague as a company, but with EA's track record so far I just might admit I hate them.
I think WAR is going to still be a great game, but what support and expansions will look like in the future is unknown. The only thing we can compare this to is Origin System which was the creators of UO. EA aquired Origin in 1992 and UO was released in 1997. UWO was supposed to be successor to UO, but EA closed the project after 2 years because EA feared that UWO would compete for subscribers with UO. EA also had layoffs during that time which was a major factor for closing the UWO project. If you need money you quit spending it on special MMO projects that take years to develop and years to make the money back.
EA did the same thing in 2004 with the UXO project, but at that time they downsized and shutdown the Origin Systems offices. This is basically because Origin Systems didn't make money for EA like the rest of the divisions. The last game release they had was in 1999 and none of the other projects made any money (because EA cancelled them). I'm sure since UO wasn't making as much money EA decided they didn't need Origin. The bad thing about it is if EA allowed Origin to finish the UWO project then they wouldn't have needed to shutdown Origin.
The merger should not effect WAR. Mythic already has a good timeline and the game should be done by then. EA does not have a good MMO to compete with the market and they really need WAR to succeed. EA should provide Mythic with great advertising and reduced packaging costs. They might even be able to help with the European market which has had its problems with DAOC.
BTW. No use crying about it now. The deal is done and if EA screws it up then there will be another company that takes Mythics place and provide even better games.
I think this was a deal that was a must mainly because I think mythic knew they would lack the funding to complete WAR the way it should be done, EA if they do this correct will let mythic develop the game as it was going to be and pump money into what EA does well. Advertising!
All in all I am happy about this happening, it will be hit or miss but I think it is a better alternative than Mythic going into a bankrupcy or having financial problems and releasing W.A.R too soon.
The terms of this acquisition must of been heavily negotiated before it happened. I am sure Mythic knew what they were doing here. Also, Mythic stated how they were going for a Q4 release date, I am sure that too was taken into consideration. The way i see it, EA is now just simply slapping their logo on the game and paying Mythic's bills.

Ohh man don't remind me of that.
Closing Westwood maded me wish i was a maniac massmurderer that had EA as next target.

Frankly if this is the case, it doesn't bother me. We have WoW to thank for MMOs being about the big bucks now, and if they needed the money to make WAR work then fair enough.
I think people rightly worry that the big corps will want more and more input into games, and I they see games as the new Hollywood, they want to put out as many cheap to make titles as they can. It worries me and others that EA won't give WAR the backing where it needs it and will want to sitck their noses in where they don't belong.
People like the suits at EA do not know what makes a good game.
Believe me, I share the general concern of the negative effects EA may have here. I used to be a very strong Anti-EA gamer. But every coin has two sides, and the fact that as of now, Mythic is still very much in control of WAR. EA saw the oppertunity in it, WAR has a chance to be a successful game. If in the event WAR turns profit, EA sure won't pull the plug on the game anytime soon.
In this day and age in gaming, development costs are enough to make a company go down under. Big name corporations such as EA are required just to keep smaller companies like the development studios it has afloat. Will Wright works for EA and look how much freedom he has in the game "Spore."
Dark Ages of Camelot was pushing what? 50+ vs 50+ player battles? Imagine the servers EA can buy for this cause, especially since WAR is on the scale it is.
However, I do share concerns here as well. I was shocked to hear this as well.
The problem is we have seen the "shiny" side of EA for quite some time and everyone hates it. Do you really want to see the dark moldy disgusting side that never sees the light of day?
Do not kid yourself Video XPG, Mythic is no longer "very much in control of WAR". You see... the simple fact is that the highest ranking official in EA that really cares about quality of this product (Mark Jacobs) is a VP.
VP != CEO or Board of Directors (who ulitmately reports to the shareholders). If dev time or the profitability data models do not support the development schedule then his opinion suddenly becomes inconsequential.
Sure... the press releases are all love fests now. NOBODY ON THEIR END WANTS TO LOSE POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS . Duh... many of the senior Mythic employees compensation plans are heavily weighted with stock options that they cannot cash until after the game is released. Wait for 9-12 months when their senior devs are bailing left and right because the product is being compromised due to dramatically shortened deadlines.
Oh... and for those of you holding out hope that GW will save the day with their control of the IP of the game. Don't hold your breath. All that means is that they get final say on storyline and the visuals. It does not mean that they have final say on server performance, quality of game mechanics, or capital long term commitment to support of said product. Yes, they have the right to influence and pull the plug (legally) if EA Mythic deviates from the GW "vision" of the game. They do not have the right to pull the plug if the core mechanics and/or support suck.
Silly people and their doomsday forecasts. I say wait and watch what happens before you start running off at the mouth about what will and will not happen.

People have become used to what EA and SOE do to MMOs, it's understandable.
Originally posted by seabass2003 First Vanguard, now WAR, last one on my high hopes list is AoC. Anyone know if they plan on selling out to anyone?
I'm right up there with you. That is bad news. But along with AoC, The Chronicles of Spellborn seems like it may work out well. So does Carpe Diem, just because they plan to introduce new concepts in the genre. We'll see....
