I mentioned this before, I'll just reference it again.
They cannot fix the lag. Neither can Blizzard or Bioware or google themselves if they got involved.
Whenever population doubles, the server load quadruples. So if 100 people can play fine, with 200 players the server load quadruples, and with 400 it's 16x as high as with 100.

They should have, if they intended to make this work, establish some form of squads (not unlike pilots have), where a fixed number of players is randomly (or semi-randomly) assigned to these groups. Then each of these groups attacks either at different times, or at several different bases, or the majority of combat happens at remote locations, and only the final event, mostly non-combat, happens at Restuss.
There's a reason WoW has queues and GW has instances. It's not to annoy players and have them pay subscriptions to wait in line, but the servers can only handly a known maximum ammount of players in the same zone.
The problem here is something else. Even if you throw a more powerful machine, O(n^2) relation means that with increasing numbers, you very quickly run out of machines that could handle it (as in, they don't exist, and super computers are out of question).
There was an article, which I cannot find right now, that analyzed this problem. Todays MMOs peak at several hundred users per zone (yes, Eve is included here too). Apparently research is being done to allow to scale this number to 10s of thousands, but it's just that, experimental, lab-tested prototype.
Most NGE players don't know what lag is, since in most day-to-day events they don't encounter it. But all pre-cu base raiders remember it. Running with 3-5 20 person groups on each side, fighting over several bases, server melting down (good experience but piss poor gameplay).
Overall the performance has been improved considerably. I'm almost sure that if someone were to measure performance of combat actions, they take now considerably less time. But any software engineer will tell you, that in scalability constant doesn't matter, just number of players.
I think that overall the event will go over fine. My reasons: - TC is for hardcore, most don't even know something has happened in past week - We all played in such lag before, and we kinda liked it. Everyone agreed lag sucked, but what can you do - Many players never participated in base raid or any kind of non-gank related GCW event (or GCW of any kind), so there's novelty effect - New shinies and trinkets - Big boom at the end - AT-ATs - Something new to do - TC is impersonal, blue frogs and all. On live, you'll have your guild, you character, your badges, your buddies
But overall it be like one of those virtual roller-coaster rides (where you sit in tilting pod with video screen). It's cool, if you just look at screen it's almost like the real thing. But as soon as you peer to the side a bit, the illusion disapears. It won't BF2 with 200 players, nor will it be make-or-break time for GCW. But it will give many that nice warm GCW feeling, with some more repeatable content, a little new scenery and proven gameplay concepts.

Back to the event, I was SF the whole time and killed off a few Rebels. Then the event ended and all the rebels went red The PvP in Nashal afterwards was alot of fun though
I've played Planetside with battles 200+ vs 200+ and there wasn't so much connection lag (i.e. ruberband, warp, etc) as in SWG I suppose its cause Planetside database and overall system is much simpler.
But, fps wise (almost not related to connection issues) SWG is very crap when dozens of players get around. Too much customization (char, weapon, armor, etc) and a dated 3d engine makes the game very slow.
Couple this with a fps system in where warps/rubberband kills the combat and there you have a poor experience. I admit that when you play with friends things get a bit niceer.
Luckily for SOE the servers are not very populated (ironic isn't it?)
Distiler that was a great post. I agree with all of it. I played Planet side also with the same experience. I loved that game but it got difficult for me to find a good fight most of the time so I quit. I tried playing again later but it just seemed that the population was so sparse.
Seeing the pics gave me that warm fuzzy feeling. So many good memories flooded back of some good pvp. I want so badly to play again, but unlike Obraik i'm not letting SOE jerk me around, lieing straight faced while happily accepting my money.
Nothing personal Obraik, your just a figure head around here, and open to shots I really respect your posting skills.
Hei Planetside map shows you the hot spots, it's impossible to miss where the battles are (although you sometimes have to check some graphic driver options because there is some bug with texturing). There is a free for a year (and more probably, like Anarchy Online did) planetside called "reserves" and you can play it with your swg account (even if it's cancelled). It allows you to go up to battlerank 6 and commandrank 2, enough to specialice in a couple of things (ie tanks and engineer), just not so versatile as a paying customer but same strong (it's not like levels)
Beware, the webpage has the same bug as SWG for people outside USA, it generate a web for different location clients and fails to load some things. The download is: http://planetside.station.sony.com/reserves/download.vm
Again, compeltely free. Download the launcher and it then downloads all necessary stuff.
Have a nice battle and steal as much bandwidth from SOE as you can ^^

I don't know whether to thank you, hit you or go cry in a corner somewhere
Anyway, just checked out TC to have a look around and it is pretty cool. You can climb up the buildings and sniper from the tops of buildings, duck away from fire behind behind the debris, etc. Shuttles land periodically dropping off fresh troops to support/slaughter and there are people running around all over the place killing each other What's even better is that it's PvP outside of friggen Theed!
Why don't put free fire there? I mean, it's almost unconcibable (sorry if I write it wrong) a fps oriented combat sistem without free fire. I think it's what annoyed me more, along with interface and camera movement. I suspect because free fire means too much stress to the server.

That ducking behind stuff is a disaster. With just usual lag, that's enough to make everyone get -Cannot see target-. That was one thing that got me to quit after NGE, because it was all about lagging around objects.
As for shuttles, NPCs are either annoying or completely pointless. At very best, they lag the place out without adding anything. And NPCs play on server time, not client time. Which means they attack at regular rates, while players attack only as fast as lag allows them. And they have force run.
The only thing that does make chuckle, is all the Jedi. They are so useless in these fights, that it's hilarious. From what I've seen, most people don't even bother attacking them, since they're no threat. It's so funny reading the whines afterwards.

Of course you're going to get -Cannot see target- when they run behind a wall, that's the purpose of doing it :P
I noticed no lag when I was fighting on TC just before whether I was fighting Players, NPC's or both.

So you never got -cannot see target- when person was right in your face, 3m in front of you? Or out of range, when you're standing 0m away, right on top of your target? And you don't get that regularly? Or you never got melee damage dealt by a person 25m away from you?
Objects may be elsewhere than where they apear (should be a sticker somewhere). Last time I estimated that, the different in position for each movable object was up to 25m (considering movement speed, client-side extrapolation, server-side extrapolation, server lag and latency). Add to that the fact, that indoor cells are on a 1-3m resolution, and you get a disaster. It's just not enjoyable, and results in lots of people crying over it.

No, I can't say I regularly have that happen at all. The closest to what you mention is when Jedi FR's away and cuts a corner you'll see them running against the wall for a few seconds until they warp to where the server see's them.

Bah, I don't understand what could possibly be appealing in this game and I'm sure you don't either MX, but he's still having fun and calling him ignorant is uncalled for. Obraik is never insulting in his posts and he really tries to prove his point honestly and fairly, albeit with a somewhat fanboi-ish approach.
As per the topic: the Restuss event would be decent without lag. But we used to have huge battles like this every weekend. If they would fix the game (Pre-CU), Restuss would be quite good.

I was not insulting him, please learn the language before accussing me of that.

I actually think he's a nice guy, but that doesn't mean he deserves a free pass on his comments. I'm glad he likes the game, and I wasn't commenting on that. He chooses to make vauge Fanboi posts saying things are not what reality shows them to be, and I won't be quite about that.

Just a reminder here. When you made this thread, you made it on a public forum, which means its open to opinions and whoever has access to said forums. Keep that in mind next time before telling somebody if they are right or wrong and theyve lost credibility. I can make the same claim regarding youre experience with the event. I can say youre ignorant and you have no credibility right? I can by the logic that has been shown.
He's claiming that people are saying they were lagless, and I have not seen ONE post saying that from ANYONE attending. I can call him out on that, he put it out there.
Even those who liked the event where saying they were completely Lagged up. I think he made it up, and it has nothing to do with his opinion, it's about what actually happened.
If I'm wrong, or he has a post, then I'll give him credt, but I didn't see one post that said that.
An Opinion is saying "I believe in Unicorns" not "and I have one under my bed". He can believe in all the Unicorns he wants, but as soon as he says he has one, I want a screenie.

Oh I'm sorry, I thought you'd read all the replies in your own thread :P Scroll up and have a look for one example Call me ignorant all you like, better then being a sheep and following what people say on some forums.
There's no post in this thread that says someone was lagless, or had no lag.
I was there. My friends were there. Here, for you...

Not having Free Fire is one of the main problems with the NGE lag actually. In PS you fire, and then the server calculates where the enemy is and where you shot (VERY simply put). In the NGE, the system WON'T fire unless you're aiming at something, meaning that every single action you take the server needs to verify FIRST that you're actually aiming at something. In day to day play, it works OK, but lags up when there are several players. In large scale PVP, like this Event, it's a nightmare.
Free Fire (AKA a new Engine) would go a LONG way to improving Largescale PVP. Having simpler textures wouldn't hurt either though
Oh, and that was a good post

Don't know what server you're on... When I was there, everything was already blown up, people were just sitting around, and it was lagging like heck. maybe I'm just used to playing an actual FPS that can handle 50 people? Helios was whizzing around at high speed, but the lag made him just jump from place to place like he had WAY too much coffee.

I dunno maybe you have a bad computer or connection, but it works great for me and theres tons of rebs and imps fighting. looks liek the rebs are winning at this point though

On the other hand, it's considerably simpler to write an aimbot for SWG that for any semi-decent FPS.

I should still get half points for the first example, he wasn't saying it was the life-ending lag that you were talking about :P
Lag WAS bad, but no worse than it used to be on Dathomir in the days of the big hunts. By last night I was getting the sort of lag I used to have in The Village during Sith raids.
Combat was, well, crap. It reminded me of a poor attempt to be SWBF2 but without the 'iconic' characters.
NPC AI was just laughable. Long columns of figures marching in single file... yeah, very realistic. Once they were fired on they just died as they seemed to have been dumbed down compared to the 'normal' NPCs.
The actual event? Welllll... bearing in mind that the 4 stages were telescoped into what, 2 hours, as Helios was manually advancing them ('sploiting scrote that he am) it wasn't a fair showing of what it's going to be like on Live as the phases could be days or weeks long depending on how long it takes to collect the required amount of 'commendations'.
Rewards? Hey, we gets new badges.. wheee...
Oh, and for 800 commendations you can get an armour component... kill 40 NPC's for a commendation. You do the math
I'm also ASSUMING that the rebels will have a 'target' to hir to trigger the event but the efforts of the Imperials will counter that? Or are the Imperials efforst also goingto count towards the destruction of an Imperial asset...
Ah well. We'll see. But, uhm, if the cry is "Save Us Restuss Event!! You're Our Only Hope!!", we're in a bad way.

Add to that the fact, that indoor cells are on a 1-3m resolution, and you get a disaster. It's just not enjoyable, and results in lots of people crying over it.

No, I can't say I regularly have that happen at all. The closest to what you mention is when Jedi FR's away and cuts a corner you'll see them running against the wall for a few seconds until they warp to where the server see's them.
Post a link... heck, prove your point and post 5 posts... please...
NO ONE was lagless, and just by posting that you PROVE your ignorance...
You've lost ALL credibility...
Disclaimer: Just got up... need coffee...

There's no post in this thread that says someone was lagless, or had no lag.
I was there. My friends were there. Here, for you...
I think that discribes what you were saying perfectly.
It was NOT meant as a dirrect insult at you, and I think you know that, but it was refering to what you were saying.

Wow, looks great! City is in ruins but alot of the blown up buildings can be walked in and you can even go to the different levels on the med center even though half the building is destroyed!
And even though there are tons of people, there isn't much lag! Great work devs and can't wait to see this on live
/shrug
I dunno maybe you have a bad computer or connection, but it works great for me and theres tons of rebs and imps fighting. looks liek the rebs are winning at this point thoughJust for you MX

On the other hand, it's considerably simpler to write an aimbot for SWG that for any semi-decent FPS.

1) Yes, when the difference is 180 degrees, lol.
2) Congrats! You found Waldo!
Seriously, I didn't think you could find one, so props to you. However, I still choose to believe the dozens of haters & fanbois than one lone claimer, not to mention, the dozens of people I was playing with...

I should still get half points for the first example, he wasn't saying it was the life-ending lag that you were talking about :P
Well, it was a mixed bag.
Restuss Image 1 - PINGTASTIC!
