If your financial situation is such that paying 25$ (which really isn't much) just isn't feasable for you, then just make a new character. This isn't one of those games where it takes months of grinding to reach the top. If you have friends to help/support you, you could probably do it faster than that, and end up with some decent gear as well.
Using that logic movies might as well cost $30 and dinner $40. I mean, it's _only_ a few hours of work, right? No big deal? I am not struggling financially and I can afford the $25. However, I'd rather spend that money elsewhere, like towards my retirement so I can stop working at 45. Or towards another video game that will keep me more entertained that WoW does.
Also keep in mind that this $25 is not necessarily a one-time fee. Remember what I said about meeting new friends that all play on different servers? That's easily $75 after having met 3 different groups of friends. And starting a new character is hardly an option, as the level 1-60 grind isn't that fun the 4th time around. And if it's not fun I'm not gonna keep paying for it.

And what's so bad about such a request? You've merely come to accept the status quo. Your dreams are too grounded in what exists now to think of anything better. It doesn't take Blizzard any effort to do these transfers--it's merely another cash flow for them on the same level as purchasing a full expansion for a game ( One would pay $30 retail for an expansion, but blizzard probably only gets $10 or less of that after the retailer and publisher have their cut). Using your mentality, I could shoot down anything. (You expect to be able to kill a unique NPC more than once just because someone else in your group got his gear? And repeatedly kill him as many times as you need to until you and every one of your friends (of the same class) have that item? And do this with every unique NPC that drops gear?)
Many people ask, "Why?" when change is proposed. They just accept things the way they are. I ask "Why not?" and dream of the way things could be.

At this point after everyone else has already tried to explain it to you several times I am not going to bother re-hashing it for you. There is a reason for it, go figure it out yourself. I asked the question because I wanted to see you clearly state if that is what you wanted, which quite frankly is excessively bad for an MMO. You are sitting here telling me to use my mentality? You haven't even begun to apply yours to this. You aren't asking why or why not, you are just bitching because you have to pay for it. A programmed in deterrent which is obviously working quite well, you being example A.
I suggest you try sticking with 1 group of friends in the future or join a guild and get some stability in a game.

Yeah ultima has gotten very bad. That's why i am trying wow, so far i like it a lot.
EA does it, CCP does it for EVE. Many companies do it. Hell EA will even sell you a pre-made character for UO.
CCP doesn't do it for Eve. There's only one realm in Eve, so there's no need to do a "realm transfer". Is what Eve does do is tranfer characters between accounts. Now if this is what WoW was advertising with the $25 price tag, I wouldn't have a problem with it.
I ask you again, why should a player be able to kill a unique NPC more than once so they can get the gear they want? It's no less absurd than characters jumping between servers, or multiple parallel realities of the world existing.
Level 60 is really the only level that easily supports friendship though.
Not true. In WoW players who show they know how to play their character, are more easily accepted as friends. WoW has a general range of 5 levels for players to be effective with each other. So a level 55 can still group with a level 60 and not drag the level 60 player down. Even as low as a level 50 can still group with a level 60 and not drag the level 60 down. The level 60 will just have to stay more alert since the lower level one is, the wider their aggro range with MOBs is.
I joined WoW with a bunch of my friends all playing on the same server. Next thing I know, one month later, 2 of my friends are at level 40, one is at level 30, and I'm still at level 20. All you need is person A and B and C to start out together, then C goes and does stuff while A and B continue to play together and when C comes back, A and B are out of his league. Now extrapolate this to 6 people... This doesn't happen at level 60, so it's the "safest" way to play with friends. Combine that with how many people already have level 60s or dislike the 1-60 grind (or doing it again) and this becomes unfun.
1. Anyone who plays WoW for 2 months and is still level 20 litterally are not playing the game. They are litterally not loging in not even for 1 hour. It's litterally like buying a movie ticket, then not going inside - instead sitting on the sidewalk for 2 hours.
It takes 30 mins to go from level 1-4. Another 30 mins to go from 4-8. Roughly 1 hour to go from lvl 8-10.
Then roughly 1 hour for every 2 levels after that. It is impossible to be playing WoW for 2 months, and still be level 20.... unless you are not playing LOL! If you are not really playing WoW then it means you are NOT really trying to share an activity with your GOOD friends LOL. If one plays super-casual for 1 hour a day, for 1 month, one will easily make level 30 in their sleep. For 2 months? Easily make level 40 in their sleep. This is just from pure soloing and doing solo quests. If one joins a group, it takes even less time to level up. Joining a guild is even quicker leveling!
And we are not even talking about dungeons yet. WoW has tons, and tons of dungeons. All different sizes. Some are instanced, some are static. Some are very tiny, simply big caves. Some are medium. Some are huge. Then there are the mega-dungeons.
Each dungeon run guarantees making between 1-5 levels!
You CLAIM you have GOOD friends on the same server? IF one is level 30 then you simply need to be lvl 25 to effectivly group with him. You need to be lvl 35 to effectivly group with your level 40 friend. If you group with them for just 1-2 hours, you can easily fly through the levels and reach their level in no time! Have your level 30, level 40 friend take you into the "Stockades" dungeon. Get all the quests (1 is on site, 1 is far south in the town in Duskwood). Do the entire dungeon. It takes roughly 1 hour or less. You will fly from level 20 to 25!
Or go into the slightly easier dungeon called "Deadmines". With a level 30 friend helping out, you will never be in serious trouble, and will easily get to his level! Bottom line, if you all are GOOD friends, then they will not mind unofficially grouping with you for just 1 hour. Do this over a 7 day period, (7 hours a week, spread out depending on you scheduale) and you will easily past level 30.
The next time you are online, do it again, and bam! You are level 30! END of your compliant about not being able to have fun with your friends! BTW, you can also 'unofficially group' with your higher level friends. You don't officially group, so no xp is shared. You attack the target first, then they come in and assist. You will get full xp. If your character is rested, you get DOUBLE xp!!
And the subject of the economy is a flawed one. If items sell for so much on an old server because of inflation, then that's the fault of the game for having an economy that only works for such a short time. Besides this, fluctuations in the economy would become more of a world event, rather than such a localized one. That is, if there's a sudden demand for a particular good and the price skyrockets, it's news to maybe 20,000 people. If players moved freely among servers it'd be news to over 2 million people. The economy would be different, yes, but not necessarily worse (well, okay, given WoW's economic mechanics it might be worse, but that's besides the point).
Back to what I mentioned in an earlier post. ALL mmorpgs are first a buisness. WoW's current formula for all the in game economies on all their servers is working as planned. Working fine. It would be BAD buisness for them to jeopardize (sp?) the economies on the roughly 50 servers just because a few players cannot afford to pay $25.oo to transfer their characters to different servers.
So sorry, but it is NOT in Blizzard's best buisness intrest to have free character transferrs for players who cannot afford to pay the $25.oo ..... especially since the majority of players who do want to do char transferrs CAN afford to pay the $25.oo
Money Grubbing? Or Capitalistic? Or simply Smart Buisness?
$25 is much more than a night at the movies. For $25, I can own 2 movies that become a part of my collection and something I could use to entertain guests for life, including non-gamers. For $25 I can enjoy 2 nice meals. For $25 I could buy a whole PC game. For $25, I could extend my subscription for (almost) 2 months.
You cannot afford the $25.oo
Case closed. If the majority who also want to do char transferrs also cannot afford it, then your complaint would register on Blizzard's radar. Alas, the majority of players who do use the char transferr can indeed easily afford the $25.oo fee.
And what games support this mobility and freedom I ask for from WoW, the freedom promised by such transfers but made inpractical because of the price? Guild Wars and Eve Online are the most noteworthy. Both have an unfractured player base that allow me to play with anyone else that plays the game.
Someone else already pointed out your mistake in mentioning EvE. That leaves you with only one example, out of the roughly 30+ mmorpgs out. GW has not been out long enough to be making a true profit yet. It is still re-couping its investment money. So there is no example of a successfull mmorpg that has free transferrs of characters to any server.
But let me help you out... RS aka Runescape has free character transferrs! Anytime, all the time! You can jump from server to server on a whim! Enjoy! Astonia III also has this too. (It's a tiny bit more involved. One has to find a special portal in game, then one can travel to another server. The portals are not too hard to find though.)
As much as I despise Blizzard i shall semi defend them here :P
You are forgetting that transferring characters costs alot of money to ready the servers. Now to ready them and maintain them there, all at the same time, will costs absolutely lots of money, plus technicians to sort out any problems that will occur. Thats why the money is there. It is also a way to put off people from abusing the system and transferring all their characters freely around without a particular need.
But then again they get alot of money out of our pockets which imo sounds like it's enough to work this but i dont know the exact facts so i have to go with them on the paid part.
If people were free to transfer anywhere anytime and free, there would be lots of problems like scams and ninja looters who would just hop servers to clear their names, therefore it's crucial to control the movement of characters between servers.
