I have been looking for a new game for a month now and I really don't want to put my credit card down on the net. I have found a game that is really cool Mu online. This game is really fun, then I looked something up about it and its just a beta...That kind of mad me mad because now I know if I want to play for a couple of months then I will have to pay for it soon... so plz if there is a game maker that reads this. I will pay to buy the game but I really dont want to pay a monthly fee for one. So what I am saying is make more games that you don't have to pay for...thx.

Hundreds of these are made every year, they just happen to not be MMOGs.
Why don't you morons who think that monthly fees are just greed get some info.. they pay for a continuing live team, for server maintenance, for bandwitch, for future xpacks development, etc etc..The fees are needed for these types of games, dont like it stick to starcraft. its only 12 bucks a month or so my god! I spend that much on coffee in one morning!(its only because lattes r so gd expensive at starbucks I Guess...)
I've seen this topic millions of times... people want the best but don't want to dish out any money...
But they will go and get fastfood three times a week... Oh well... people will never learn.
What will he do next?
I dont blame him lol,
But soon, with some of the ideas being tested, there will be safer, ways than using your ceditcard, and acessable to people under 18... just bide your time, but I assure you, they are comming.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
It's 2004 people... if you see some crazy $4,000 purchase with your creditcard all you have to do is call and they will remove it. I don't understand why people are so anal about it...
Yeah things happen, but how offen now-a-days?
What will he do next?
All the big name mmorpg companies keep your credit card private, theres no way you'll lose money from people stealing it off the net. Things are alot more secure nowadays.
#1, most people who are nervous about using there CC, arent going to look into whether or not its safe, thats stupid yes, but its what the masses of people do, and its not changing anytime soon, and its a littel harder than just phoning the CC company and saying "hey theres 4000 dollars on my CC, please get rid of it".
#2Guildwars is going to release many many expansion packs, so you pay only for the content additions you want, so if you want to always have hte new stuff, it will be like paying a monthly fee, but if you dont mind only having the odd expansion (places to go, items etc) then it will be a lot cheaper if not, only the one time fee

Their model will be lots of expansions, each requiring payment...I believe this is how I understand it. Make no mistake, if they don't generate the same $10-$12 per month, per player that other MMORPGs do one of 2 things will happen:
a) the game will be full of bugs and there will be no support (gm's and technical support)
b) they will go under
I think when you are like 14 years old you don't understand why everything isn't free...once you enter the real world you will realize that you need a home, food, electricity, clothes, etc and mommy and daddy are not footing the bill. The people behind these games are talented individuals, many have tens of thousands invested in college, other thousands of hours in studying and learning. If they can't make a good wage from your subscriptions they will all go design business software and you won't have MMO's to play
You can't compare MMORPG games to "multiplayer" enabled games like Diablo or Starcraft. With these games the team goes from like 100+ people to like 5 after the release of the game. You don't see any real updates (except the occasional patch) and no one is around to help you in game. The server structure for these games is very simple - not requiring clustering technology because there are no worlds with more than 8-64 people.
A good MMORPG that is well supported requires a lot of money to keep running and pay the staff. The dev team typically remains nearly full force after release and from that point on they require a full support team as well as a few highly skilled network admins (and these guys are NOT cheap!). They also have to take great care to make sure that database servers are backed up and redundant...lost characters would be the death of a MMORPG. Lastly you have bandwidth...nothing eats bandwidth like a MMO game...they have to transmit the X,Y,Z,Pitch,Yaw and velocity of all characters to every character...in addition to millions of characters of chat data. This is a lot of information and grows exponentially the more players there are in a given zone.
Just some things to chew on...look at games like Rubies of Eventide if you want an idea of the funding needed to stay afloat in this industry...
I just don't get how people get upset about the cost. I mean I pay $22 to take my wife to the movies after popcorn and a drink. It is over in 2 hours and 75% of the time I am left dissapointed. For $12 you can play your average MMORPG hundreds of hours if you wish...it is so cheap compared to other forms of entertainment.

If you dont want to put a credit card online, then get a cash card. They can be found everywhere. Its used just like a CC but you have a set limit of how much cash you deposited on it.
For those that are afraid of putting your CC into a game, Have you ever:
1: Given your Credit card to a waitress in a restaurant? He/she take your card, walk off somewhere you can't see them for 5-30 minutes then bring it back. This is secure?
B: Tossed out a receipt without shredding it? CC numbers are normally gotten from the trash, if you ever tossed anything without shredding it you could be easily exploited.
3: Order anything form a mail catalog? How do you know how got your CC? It passed hands many times. Anyone of them could have be maxing it out now.
4: Read your CC number a phone? It doesn't take much to listen in on just about cell/wireless/ or even lan line phone. Your risk here is about equal to the internet.
All and All, showing your CC in public is a risk, the internet is no more of one. (or less) Don't be a afraid of this "new-fangled-contraption"
As for the rest... what admin said.
