Yep I am one of them and not just because of the SWG fiasco
I had a NIGHTMARE with a Sony VAIO a few years back. Best Buy ended up replacing it with a new laptop under their "no lemon" clause in the extended warranty. After 3 hardware fails (mine was faulty heat shield, de-soldered RAM sockets, and a failed HDD)..BB let me choose a new laptop. I have had this gateway since last september and not a single issue.
Funny thing was I bought it as an upgrade to be able to play SWG on it. The default driver supplied with the laptop would not render character faces in the game...had to use a hacked driver to play a SOE game on a Sony laptop.....LOL>
Whenever I am in the market for anything, if it has those 4 nasty letters S-O-N-Y, I don't dare buy it.
Anyone check out their stock performance lately? Along with everything above, you can count in the root kit, delayed and under spec PS3, and now what looks like a format war they are going to loose.
First of all don't take what I am going to say the wrong way.
Alot of people say a roll back is their only option etc but how will a roll back accomplish anything? Its been over a year now since we had the original Pr-cu and NGE servers, in that time people who stayed in the game have progressed their characters further by gaining loot items, rewards etc. A roll back because of this 12 months absence of the Pre-CU code on existing servers is impossible as it would probably take them an eternity to get every ones items, characters etc back to the exact point they were before the CU went live. Also what about the new players what will happen to them they didn't exist before the CU or NGE hit.
If they did open new classic servers what makes you so sure any self respecting person who got the shaft from SOE will return to give the same company a monthly subscription. I know I would never pay them again because after 2 1/2 years I know what to expect, what their priorities are, how they regard their player base and I will show them the same contempt they showed me and many others like me, they can go **** themselves as far as I'm concerned.
I very much doubt that the current developers they have working on the the game will be able to cope or enhance the previous incarnation of the game (they are poor at best with the crap they pump out now). One of the main reasons they blastedout the NGE was so that they could create a game which they can easily code for and the Pre-cu is not that (then again they can't even do that with the NGE). Considering that hardly any of the original developers are there any more it will be very very difficult to even attempt to fix any of the problems that the Pre-cu contained (and yes there were some).
So what I'm basically saying is if your angry that SOE shafted you yet your willing to go back and pay them 8 or 9 quid a month again if they roll back what does that say about your character? If you have any self respect you would just let them kill their business and the game and just wait for the SWGEMU which will eventually be out there going against some ill informed peoples views.

It's not even so much about respect. People would instantly jump back. But immediately they'd realize that this isn't what they remember. During this time, most tried other games. And most like them. I find it impossible to get engaged back into SWG. Not because of NGE. But I've played other games and still do. A game where you go do a quest and get a reward. Not try to start a quest, find out it's broken, find a workaround, try doing the quest again, nothing spawns, you restart, now you get the spawns, you complete it, but it doesn't update, on 4th try it works and you get a decorative item that is broken for 6 months.
Because this is the reality of SWG vs. others. It always was. But the major counterpart, the community, is gone. While some would come back, it wouldn't be even remotely the same thing. First, you'd have the grinders. They don't care about anything, they'd be grenading or DWBing their way to Jedi and then start fight clubbing the FRS. Next you'd have crafters, who'd spend 6 months waiting for that perfect named spawn of resource to show up. Then you'd have entertainers, or better yet, AFK bot in cnet.
Would the community ever form again? I say it's highly unlikely, but not impossible. But as far as mechanics go, 90% of those that left would come back, see how broken it always has been (lots of rosy glasses back then), and realize that even the most basic stuff is broken, and always has been. Then they'd permanently leave, with no afterthough ever.
This isn't a pre-cu bash. It's just the way things are and always have been.
My guess, and of course its all speculation, is that LA will push the shutdown, (as has been mentioned before in this thread). They can't be happy, and of course we know they are not. SoE took the most viable and potentially most profitable franchise ever and drove it into the ground. Even at its peak, SWG wasn't anywhere near its potential, if the game had been done right. Don't get me wrong, I loved the original SWG, and I am one who would play again if they ever have a rollback, but even with that version, the game didn't live up to its potential. I mean come on, its Star Wars man, this game should have the largest fanbase of any MMORPG, period.

Was Star Wars big in China? Because that's where all the big numbers come from. Western markets of WoW account for 2-2.5 mil. The rest of the growth is in China alone.
There's asian games that are pushing 500k concurrent users daily. That's more than global concurrent users for WoW. EvE is touted as insane success, but they have what, 30k concurrent? I mean, there's games out there with 50 million accounts in 6 months.
The market is in fantasy, gambling and alternative (DDR, Guitar Hero and equivalent online games) gaming in asia. The rest is small potatoes. Online gambling sites alone reach millions alone.

I tried all the other big name MMORPGs and none of them kept me interested for any length of time. I suspect that many ex-SWG gamers feel the same way. If SWG offered a 'classic' server I'd sign up once more in an instant because there was reason to believe that SWG was finally starting to head in the right direction before NGE went live. Sure, there was a way to go, but there had been some improvements to certain aspects of the game that made me believe that the developers were actually starting to listen to us. Heck, maybe I'd be foolish to give them $15/month again, but hey, it's Star Wars and if there's hope that I can play music in a Star Wars cantina with good friends again I'll jump at the chance.

Sony doesn't make the video cards on the motherboards to support hardware transform and lighting. Most shared ram video cards for laptops do not support hardware transform and lighting for the simple fact that in most applications it is unnecessary. The "hack" was most likely an intel video card driver hack as most recent motherboards for laptops contained the built in intel card. I returned a Toshiba laptop I bought for this specific issue and got a compaq with a built in video card that did support hardware transform and lighting. It isn't Sony's fault but the motherboard supplier. You can only fault QA so much for bad hardware that gets out alot of the parts stress test is done outside sony and they depend on there suppliers to work there parts through. Once final assembly occurs the machines are run through some stress testing. The flaw was simply not working enough man hours on parts supplied outside sony corp. Trusting long time suppliers to facilate there end of the negoiated deal. Rarely do these suppliers risk losing majore business contracts to ship a few bad parts. It was really not a matter of Sony screwing the consumer on defective parts but instead being to large and trusting of a corporate entity.
As with all the products you mentioned none of them are produced by sony themselves but a parts manufacturer subcontractor. As someone who orders a lot of hardware I can tell you that there is always going to be bad batches of hardware no matter who the maker is, whether that has been dell, hp, sony, gateway, aopen, etc. All these places order hardware from the same few suppliers and if there is a screw up in manufacturing it happens. Get over it about your laptop. My mothers Vaio has been a beauty of a laptop and I am impressed with its design, weight and battery life.
I also dont trust the consumer didn't contribute to the devices defectiveness. Not saying you did do this but improper positioning of the machine, over using the battery with the wall unit in place can cause severe heat damage. Operating a laptop without a docking station for longer then 4 hour periods puts heavy strain on the laptops internal parts especially without proper heat disipation by leaving it on a hard surface over many hours of usage. In short if you where swg gaming with it on a desk for 4 hour windows without a break you are partially to blame for the hardware failure as the product specifications warn against that type of usage.
However, I wont touch a sony product for the management decision to keep Smedley at the helm of soe. He is completely retarded and lacks leadership and vision. Its clear his team doesn't respect him nor does the public. Sony wont get back my loyal business till he goes.
I can almost guaruntee the next Star Wars MMO will be cross-platform. The reality is there are many more Star Wars gamers that play consoles exclusivley than there are hardcore MMORPG players. The only way to get the number of subs that LA will be satisfied with is by capturing the console market.
In essence this was the major failure of SWG from the beginning. The IP enticed alot consolers to jump on board, many who had never played a MMORPG before(myself included). The consolers expected one type of game, but found the time commitment, dedication and complexity more than what they were prepared to invest in. Subsequently they bailed early on, or hearing from friends, never even tried it out. Those who stayed, were the older more dedicated fans, and the hardcore MMORPGrs. I am sure this is what they found out in their focus groups
I know that LA and SOE has learned from this, and the next game will be developed with the console market paramount in their mind.
BTW i would never play a cross platform, so they would lose me as customer either way, but it would bee a good strategic business move.
Originally posted by bugzonlsd heh, I wouldnt blame the guy if he did shut down the game. Had I been in the position to do so, believe me, Id have done it. Log into those forums and read the posts people make, its calmed down alot due to canceled subs but for those who remain it seems every other post is...
The "calming down" that you perceive is not what it seems....
They are taking a VERY HEAVY hand at deleting any/all negative posts over there. Just tonight, I was trolling (alas, cannot post) around 9:00-10:00PM CST and the 1st 2 pages were almost entirely negative. I opened about 10 threads in tabbed browsing. I wasn't even finished with the first thread when all my others said "this thread has been deleted"
When I refreshed the main page, the mood looked completely different. They think that by deleting the "hate" all their troubles will disappear. It is pitiful really.
$OE deserves everything they get. Helios is a toilet bug with a brain to match. TH is right behind him and the rest of the new devs (except for the poor artist guy trying to make the character models look better with some nice shiny new textures) have proven that they can't seem to do anything right. Seriously, SWG is done and should be flushed down the toilet. LA should take the Star Wars MMO license and let someone else have a stab at it. The code for SWG is so butchered and $OE has smeared their name and the Star Wars name in MMO space so badly it's not repairable now.
If the statement is true what Helios said. Then they should really just shut it down now. I doubt they will and I highly doubt, no, I know they'll never offer "classic" servers. They don't have the brains nor the guts to admit they made an error. Perhaps they are afriad of the old Pre-CU code. Who knows?
One thing that would be rather hilarious. If all the digruntled SWG players and general $OE haters all got together and wrote to DC Comics declaring they won't play $OE's upcoming DC Comics MMO. $OE may not listen to it's customers but I bet DC would.

I doubt that DC would do anything. SOE has had the rights to develop their MMO for over a year now.
Besides, I couldn't care who does what with DC comics (Marvel FTW!)

They're both just second rate CoH ripoffs.

It sounds great, so great in fact, I pitty those who canceled - Some deluded SWG fanboi who pities me.
I don't like it when you say things. - A Vanguard fan who does too.
