Although I, for one, approve of the merger as it is indicative of modern business if I was to play devil's advocate I would suggest that EA has a business strategy of sabotaging online games. This would reduce the loss of customers from its core revenue of (crap) sports console games. However, as I mentioned earlier in this thread it would be like Sega trying to prevent the inevitable roller coaster of Playstation in the nineties.
There for I would expect that the investment of EA money into Mythic's Warhammer is driven, not through a policy of sabotage, but of achieving the maximum return, and even achieving the mammoth success of WoW.
Time will tell, and all those who have shared thier bad experiences in this thread with regards EA's conduct in the past have my sympathy. However, most corporations will be ruthless with failure and those involved in this particular business affair are unlikely to be the same reps that were involved in previous failures. Unlike small businesses, which have small clout in the market and are more open to mismanagement, corporations are responsible to the share holders. Yes, money is the driving force but do you want a beautiful, idylic but impoverished Cuba of a game or the monster of capitalist U.S. of A, freedom of speach, mack daddy of a game?
The good side like the EnB and UO fans are looking at right now? Or perhaps those that were waiting on UO2 and UOX, that good side?
All the games that you mentioned were all made by pathetic companies, lets say you were the CEO of EA, would you honestly invest in those games that had a shitty amount of players playing?
Clearly somone clever like you would think that they would learn from there mistakes wouldn't you? Thats why they are placing so much confidence on Mythic, they took a background check and looked over everything before investing more money on this so called "crap". After all these years DAoC hasn't had the plug pulled yet, what would make you think they would call WAR off?
As i said earlier, take a look at the GOOD side of this merger, because there isn't any BAD sides, Gamesworkshop wouldn't allow EA to merge with Mythic if they knew that EA would F**k them over, grow a brain for gods sake.

it probably wasn't technically lying...he said "not talking currently"...he didn't say recently, so he could have been saying that he was not on the phone with EA at that very moment, or perhaps EA and Mythic had agreed to not talk for a week during the vacations of the company officers. its not an "I did not have sexual relations with that woman", more of an "I do not recall that, Senator".

Hahahaha, you obviously don't know wtf you're talking about... EA stopped production on UO2 and merged what they developed modeling wise into Ultima Online because it had the bigger customer base at the time, when they done that they came out with Third Dawn, then a few months down the road Lord Blackthorne's Revenge. Then 2 years later they anounced that Ultima X Odyssey was in full swing and about to enter open beta and was using the Unreal Tourney 2004 game engine, which we all know that alot of games up until the Doom 3 and Half Life 2 engine was based off of... this was their anouncement when they canned UXO:
"As of today, development on Ultima X: Odyssey has ended. We feel that Ultima Online is where we need to focus our online efforts and most of my team will be moving to the UO expansion pack, the UO live team, and an unannounced Ultima Online project."
As you can see planly they decided to stick with their exsisting player base in Ultima Online, an ancient tired engine. Real corporations take risks like SOE, Turbine, etc. they actually develop a sequel to their popular online games to move forward in time, not keep adding fresh water to a stagnent pool that's not going anywhere. If they would listen to their community of players they would know they are crying out for a new 3D modern version of Ultima Online. The only ones who do not want it either can't let go, or can't afford to upgrade their computers to play something next gen. If EA were real business men and women they would know they could make a killing with a nextgen version of Ultima Online and still keep the tired version up and running. A new nexgen version of Ultima Online would probably be the ONLY stiff competition to World of Warcraft in the market as it stands right now. Yet it's just like the CEO of THQ said "it would be a bad move to come out with any mmo while WoW is running strong, it would only be advisible when WoW starts a downward slope in the market". That's all fine and good for a "pathetic company" since you want to use that term, such as THQ so they roll out a Diablo clone full of bugs and crashes, with no updates for over 2 weeks. A company with the money that EA has could make it happen, since you guys want to claim EA has all this money and Mythic will benefit from their backing/support.
Time will tell but I've been around the mmo community and gaming since the mid 90's and when a large corp gets their hands into the jar it's not a good thing, and when you've seen not 1, not 2, but 3 bad mmo moves made on part by EA in the past 5 years it's not a good thing. You can also see some bad moves and planning if you look into Turbine selling out to Microsoft for Asheron's Call, the game slowly went down when that happen... they sold it back to Turbine because it wasn't the cash cow MS expect because they were ruining it, and Turbine has yet to recover. I believe companies that's never had a successful mmo, should stick with what they know and not take on an exsisting mmo thinking they know what customers want. EA should stick to marketing BF series, Sims and their sports games and leave the mmo's alone, because of their track record. Oh, and like was mentioned about "Mythic wouldn't do this or that if they thought EA would ruin their game" you get enough money and promise waved in your face you'd let a company buy in and just hope it doesn't turn bad.
trust us, how many times have we heard that from EA, Mythic, SOE etc... the list goes on... if you like the game play it, but track records are like those that the courts use to decide what to do with a criminal. If you done it before you will do it again... people change sure, but habbits don't.
R.I.P. Mythic.
"The monster created isn't by the company that makes the game, it's by the fans that make it something it never was"
Call me mind reader if you want.. but EA has a very ugly record of buying companies to take down the competence.. Add WestWood Studios to the list of bought and taken down.. Remember Earth & Beyond?
Id bet Dark Age of Camelot will not last very long.
Probably a long shot, but maybe this will open up something for Imperator Online. I'm looking forward to Warhammer because it's a Mythic game, but Imperator actually looked interesting to me and seemed somewhat unique.
Bad news indeed, EA Mythic, not only will Daoc do another UO but i guess like people say EA are gonna rush Warhammer onto the shelf and more than likely screw it up, a shame indeed
All the games that you mentioned were all made by pathetic companies, lets say you were the CEO of EA, would you honestly invest in those games that had a shitty amount of players playing?

I "might" not know what im talking about as you say "reagentz" but really take a look at it from the little guys for once and dont go on doomsday preaching without looking at both sides of the story like a school girl who just had a period. Bare with me here now.
Mythic was a small company before and didn't have alot of resources or funding, but they made an MMORPG that will not be forgotten because of its amazing concept and dedication to players. I personally played DAOC for 5 years, it was really fun at the time< i moved to wow because all my IRL friends play it and said amazing reviews about it, i am currently playing it> and slowly the player base kept on getting lower and lower, but mythic still did not give up. Currently they are making Warhammer Online and ontop of that they set out another expansion for DAOC.

Mythic 'Postpones' Imperator MMORPG
Mythic Entertainment, developers of Dark Age of Camelot and the upcoming Warhammer MMORPG, have announced the indefinite delay of Imperator, a third massively-multiplayer project announced in October 2004. The futuristic game, which also integrated elements of the Roman Empire and was originally scheduled to be released in June 2006, has been put under review regarding its future at Mythic.
All Imperator staff will be moved onto existing projects, such as a new Dark Age of Camelot expansion titled Darkness Rising, as well as the just-announced Warhammer-licensed online game, being created following the cancellation of a similar project at developer Climax. However, none of the developers that were formerly on Mythic's Imperator project will be laid off.
Nonetheless, the move will not come without a slowdown to proposed expansion plans: as a result of the delay, Mythic is holding off on establishing a previously announced European office until the 2007 release of Warhammer.
Since TA Associates completed a $32 million venture capital investment in Mythic in March 2003, the largest ever granted to any independent game developer, the company, which is privately held and does not need to publically report financial results, can likely support the added financial burden that this cancellation brings.
Speaking on the reasons for the postponement, Mythic CEO Mark Jacobs said: "Our team made a tremendous effort with the game and the praise it drew at E3 and in previews reflected their skill and dedication. But in the final analysis it just wasn't great enough to be a Mythic game at this time."
And thats that, really.... They didn't want to but had to in a nutshell..
Ultimatly....
1.WarhammerOnline will be amazingly successful to begin with, there is no doubt on my mind it Wont be.
2. EA will Not let go of mythic for atleast a good 5 years, they want the money they gave earned and then some. After that you might speculate that they are the devil and take out your pitchforks..
3. Games Workshop is working incredibly closely with blizzard since they created the Warhammer franchise and license, they are not like some other licenses which turn out horribly <batman-superman- the list goes on..> because they are dedicated to their fans
And yes Time will tell when a company has made a bad move into an MMORPG but because the companies that they supported were companies who only make a game for money, companies like NCSoft and Turbine and the creators of Archlord are just interested in profit so they stick 5 people in a room for a couple of month's to make a game then ship it out, if it fails they send another and another till they get it right..
Mythic is a company which puts quality in the gameplay, if you truly are a player of DAOC you should know this but are too busy sharpening your pitchfork and doomsday preaching......

meant workshop and mythic? Let's not bring up to old news when Gamersworkshop took
blizzard to court. Did you ever wonder why another Starcraft game wasn't made? Dig threw
some history between these two companies and you will know why. Horrible typo because
these two companies would never work together
I know it was a typo but no need to say, "Never". From what I understand both companies greatly respect each other. Back when Wow released I remember reading that the fellows at Games Workshop would be playing WoW. Blizzard has greatly borrowed from and been influenced by all of the Games Workshop stuff out there. I think you are confusing the fanboys with the professionals.
Yes the fanboys would like to think the two companies hate each other, but it is simply not the case.
