The damn immersion excuse for everything from you twits is getting old. Jumping to get around things is cool, a lil' leap over a fence rather than run it's course is actually helpful, but do I leap fences in real life to get to the office quicker? Or to get into the court house to turn in my quest to get my papers to the notaries and back to my quest giver so it's all legal? Yeah, I leap all the time in real life and if a MMO doesn't allow me to hop like I do in real life I lose my sense of immersion into the game world...
Behaving like a jackass and insulting people doesn't make your argument correct. Being able to jump in a game actually does have to do with immersion. The real world is not 2 dimensional. Being able to move your avatar in a game on the Z axis, just like you can in real life, makes the movement in a game feel more real, and less contrived, because your virtual representation can move in the same ways you can. This makes it easier for you to connect and self identify with your in game representation. Shigeru Miyamoto has spoken a great deal about this concept, if you want to read some interesting thoughts by one of the industry's top game designers about the importance of character controls in a game.
Originally posted by eburn Greetings twit, who said anything about jumping shoulder height? I did, did you not see what I posted? Log into EQ 2 or WoW, you seem the type already, hit the jump button. Where does the heels of the character go? I was just giving an average. So stop being a dumb ass.

you can raise your jump skill in AC. at 400 jump skill, you can jump onto rooftops from the ground. that's just plain fun. They nerfed the jump in PvP fights, but it used to be craaaaaaaaazy. Fighting from rooftop to rooftop was a freakin blast. It was like watching Once Upon a Time in China or somesuch.

Jumping is something everyone should be able to do in game. We are not cemented to the ground for godsakes...
Maybe I would like to get over a hill or a rock and not have to go 100 feet out of my way to climb a small hill (like in Ryzom). The lack of jumping in Ryzom was one of the main reasons I quit the game...it's one of my only complaints with it....but it's a huge one.
Asking people why they want to be able to jump is like asking people why they want to be able to walk or run.

Jumping is fun I can understand that in a game, but bunny hopping like you're in BF2 I can just about live with if there is no annoying "umph" sound attached to it. That's the only reason I can think of is to annoy people with the "umph" sound. Personally I think that jumping should be linked to stamina or endurance or whichever attribute drains so that eventually that player gets fatigued. There are plenty of other games spoilt by Mr Hyper without ruining these games too, go play those instead! And tuck your shirt in!
It's not about the jumping per se, but about the concequences. Being able to jump means more possibilities with the terrain design and gameplay. In my opinion all the games are very simple about this aspect, more kinda to mario bross. You should be able not only to jump (the undead jumping in Wow are cool ¿?) but also scale up trees, rocks and walls and hang on cornices. This movement freedom, while quite unoriginal and even present in very old school arcades and graphic adventures, is not included in current mmorpgs.
I do not know about the mmorpg future, but I would like to see games with more customization, lore (that is, be able to follow a story with an npc, not the current "vendor" type ones), immersion, cummunity and freedom of movement and action. This is just to say that the current games are very simple, in some aspects more simple than then past old games. It's nothing about a quest vs. sandbox game type. I wouldn't try to even limit them more in the future, the nerf has been enough.
in eq2 you can jump atop things and stack things to jump up on to the stack to get over some prisons in splitpaw dungeons, also eq2 has scalable walls which you climb up, i dislike it when a game has a jump feature that has no use in the game for jumping say swg for instance, you can jump, but for what reason besides to fiddle with yer mouse, if yer gonna have a jump in a game atleast have it be used somehow within the game
Not being able to jump ruined GW and Factions being a great game in my book. I loved everything else, but being a lead weight on the ground just got on my nerve.

Being able to do casual actions in games is what i enjoy. I always disliked that in older games everyone is always in the ready position, eager to attack something 100% of the time. Actions like jumping at will help you feel more relaxed with your character. IF you dont like to jump you can always choose not to do so.
I like seeing jump in games, and to be honest expect to see it. The new craze of 2007 will be climbing and wall scaling. With these new abilities it adds more features for cahracters to do, quest wise, combat wise. The possiblties are endless. To be honest, theres no real reason to be opposed to adding more features such as jumping.

It's annoying and unrealistic when you can't step over small stuff. Like, say, a tree root, or an edge. It'd also be nice if you could climb... I mean, if your character can't even jump, how are they supposed to dodge arrows/gunfire? It's always annoying when you're walking along and you have to walk around something.
i am jump in mmo because u the most times can get new armor, swords (be the best) lol shields and that things its fun and ife u dont have money for an new game u go play free an mmo

Because you can jump in real life. And because jumping, in a well done MMORPG, is often a valuable tactic in battle (as well as travel).
There's no reason not to put jumping in a game. Why not let people jump? And I REALLY get irritated with MMO's that'll let you walk across water but you can't swim...wtf is up with that? Or better yet, a small pond is an insurmountable obstacle.... again... because you can't swim.

Also, bypassing obstacles is valid. Maybe the developers made a nice garden path that wanders around and switches back. If I'm not in a hurry, I'd probably follow it around and look at the visuals. But if I'm supposed to be meeting with someone I might want to skip that.
IRL I'm not in amazing shape (I certainly can't run for days on end) but a waist-high, smooth-topped stone wall would only make me pause, it would not be an insurmountable obstacle. While shoulder-height jumping might be unrealistic, I'd much rather have a character that jumps high than one that is completely trapped by small obstacles. That's why jumping is there in games, being blocked by tiny pieces of terrain is just silly.

Jumping up onto things is a performance art.

You can jump on top of things to get screenshots, survey the situation, and things such as that.
That and it adds a little bitto flavor to PvP depending on the game.
