I'd have to say Everquest-1. It was just such a great game when I first started in 2001. times when I got scared searching through the erie sewers and finally reaching highpass hold, then running through that rechid forest with a zombie commander after me! Was a great game and In fact I still play today 5 years later hehe.
Also...Littlema...you know whats trippy?! Your dark grey text seems to fade every time I scroll the page....wooow..
Hi! My name is paper. Nerf scissors, rock is fine. MMORPG = Mostly Men Online Roleplaying Girls http://www.MichaelLuckhardt.com
My first MMO was Ryzom. One thing I loved from Ryzom was that there was no class, you can do anything you want. This is something very important to me, not to play a game with tight classes. There are many things I don't like from Ryzom, and from MMOs in general like grind passed as content, kill-steal, the time it takes to get anywhere, really high level to reach, boring gameplay, etc.
When I played Guild Wars, it was the first time in a year or two I had real fun in an MMO, I bought the game two weeks after it came out and I still play it every day. I love that we have no obligation to PvP whatsover so PvE players like me are not bothered by PvP and PvP players. GW has none of the MMOs downsides and all the fun and qualities of good MMOs. The graphics are the best out there. The classes flexibility is really great and fun and we get to play two classes instead of one, plus each class has around 75 different skills to toy with which makes around 150 skills in total for each character. Each class has its own unique look, that too I love. I really love the gameplay and how quick we access the game (and the action), we don't have to wait till we're max level to have fun. I love the UI, the chat system, the map, etc. It's a game that seems simple and yet is really deep and gets you hooked. I love that everything is balanced, all the classes are equal. There is no uber anything that makes you better, you have to be smart to be good in GW, it's all about skills and not uber anything that get you anywhere. The instances are nice, it's more realistic to be all alone in the wilderness, it's more chilling as well. There is a storyline and the missions are well done, the quests are fun and there is a sense of humor visible here and there, showing that the devs don't take themselves too seriously. The streaming technology is the technology every single MMO should have. The game is being patched constantly and very quickly, the support system is excellent, the devs deliver, which is more than many payable MMOs out there (especially Nevrax with Saga of Ryzom, they took too much of my money). Frankly, I don't think anything can beat GW.
I also play City of Villains, I have fun in it as well but it's different. I love the customization with the creation of characters, the graphics are nice as well, very modern with touches of scifi. Missions tend to be repetitive though and while they seem to give you choice in your pools of different powers, the skills are rather limited compared to GW's flexibility. You make mistakes in CoV and you have to delete your charr and restart all over again, in GW, you just move your attribution points in another line, that's all, you can even change your second class if you don't like it. Once you play GW, you're spoiled. I also like the touches of dark humor in CoV and the dirty look everywhere. Also, you can really RP in CoV while you can't really do that in GW.
Of the two, I prefer GW. I'm checking out Tabula Rasa, I need some scifi MMO to get my scifi fix.
Asheron's Call: Early 2000, everyone loves their first, but I didn't need to use that reason on this game.
AC2, at release, just outstanding skill system. If they released with the content they had at +13 months they would have a killer game. (Call me a Turbine fan I guess)
Ragnarok Online: Started during iRO Alpha/Beta. Still what I consider the best hack/slash MMO to date. Just a really good character development system that I still enjoy occasionally.
A couple other more recent games are up there on my list, but these are my top 3 that impacted my understanding on the genre.
If you could dream it, it could probably be done. I remember first starting out in UO. I knew nothing of the game except what I needed to know. Enter the sewers. Kill a few frogs and rats. Sell the meat for money. Rinse and repeat. Even try to kill the occasional person that went grey. Eventually I upgraded to the Britain graveyard, then the Delucia orc fort, then the BK room; so on and so forth. I remember talking with my friends about UO. We had big plans for that game. My friend wanted to make a UO casino in a large marble house he was going to buy. I remeber the almighty Atomic Godz guild on the Chesapeake server pre-Renaissance. I remember when factions first came out, how names such as Julie Cook, James, and Tylar Androx became names everyone knew and respected. Nothing was forced on you in UO, which made it feel as it you truly were in another world simply living amongst other players. No MMO has yet revived the magical feeling I experienced when I played UO. Wether it was crafting, PKing, hunting for IDOC houses, trying to scam a player out of his money, placing a house, whatever; everything in UO was fun. In the end thats all that matters.
2 - Guild Wars
Unfortunately my Guild Wars experience was sullied by the relase of World of Warcraft. Not because WoW was a superior game, (which it absolutely isnt) but because nearly my entire guild stopped playing Guild Wars and moved on to WoW. However, Guild Wars remains my second pick. Sure, it doesn't qualify as a true MMORPG. It is, however, an MMO. More importantly, it is a hell of a lot of fun. Now, I won't stand here and lie to you about how much fun the leveling aspect of Guild Wars is. It isn't. Its boring as hell. However, the true essence of Guild Wars comes from the group and guild PvP that comes later on. When you have a full 8 person group of people you know well, then Guild Wars becomes amazingly fun. To battle it out for guild bragging rights in GvG combat and for country bragging rights in the bigger PvP battles is amazing. Simply put, Guild Wars was the most fun I had in an MMO afer UO, however short a time it lasted for me.
3- Final Fantasy XI
I would love to have FFXI be my #1 pick, being the avid FF fan I am, but the lack of PvP and the slow paced combat are pretty tough for me to ignore. Having said that, FFXI was and probably still is (I dont play anymore) an incredibly well crafted MMORPG. The story far suprassed the stories of any other MMO's I had played up until that point. When you partook in quests you actually felt as if you were doing something meaningful. Growing plants in your apartment was an enjoyable minigame that wasnt too demanding and reaped many rewards if done right. The community was often incredibly helpful. The absolute best part of FFXI was grouping. If you had a well balanced group where everyone knew what they needed to do, then killing monsters for hours (something that would usually be the most boring aspect of an MMO) became incredibly fun. In fact, I would have a ton of fun as a White Mage, simply sitting back and healing my party over and over, with the occasional de-buff casting. Don't ask me why it was fun, because I honestly don't know. The fact remains, however, that it was fun. Again, the only reason I stopped playing FFXI was because all of my friends quit. I guess I was leveling too fast for them to stay interested .
And just so you know, i've played: UO, GW, FFXI, EVE, PS, E&B, WOW, MxO, RO, AO (since UO was my first game I'm definitely biased against EQ) (Also beta'd/trialed SWG, FoM,and AA)
There's my 2 cents. If you read the entire thing then I thank you. I know it was a lot.
EVE- the only game where you can do what you want within the game mechanics, and the only game to give me such an adrenaline rush that I'm shaking after combat!
Shadowbane, unrestricted guild warfare and PvP ^_^
Yup, #1 for true PvP engagement Shadowbane is the best. Running small groups and killing much larger groups was a blast. Banes, at one time, were a reason to just pick up a 12 pack of Corona and stay home to PK all night.
My 2nd, for long term addiction would be the Original EQ. It was all about what you and your friends could do vs. tons of mobs. I played an Enchanter, so my nerves took a toll after 4.5 years
Honorable mention goes to DAoC, WoW, EQOA & Anarchy Online.
Current: GW2 (almost) Played: EQ, DAoC,EQOA,Shadowbane,WoW, WAR, SWTOR, TSW
Well if i could use a mmorpg that is still in development id say my favorite mmorpg is navarea online (because im one of the developers) other than that id say runescape because i have crapy internet and cant play any other mmorpgs without major lag.
Started playing it back in 2000 and played it for about 2 years.
It was my first and favorite MMO and as some have said, nothing else has ever come close. The world was massive (especially for being a seamless world). It wasnt as much of a grind as EQ and you could pace yourself since it was possible to solo almost anything. The spell system was great (when components were still around) and actually produced a true spell economy. The quests were great and the dungeons were simple but still fun. The best part though? The PvP! Being able to be attacked at any time anywhere if you were a pk'er (or no matter what on Darktide) was amazing. Also the fact that battles between 2 people could end instantly or in some cases i have seen them last 30 minutes. Everything about AC was the best i've seen in any MMO and in all honesty, my ideal game would be a remake of AC just how it used to be but with an awesome graphics engine. It would not be any WoW, but it would draw a good crowd and could be the best of new generation mmo's (of course this will never happen).
DAoC was also a favorite. Starting the game from the day it came out and seeing it evolve over the time i played it was amazing. Seeing the absolute beginnings of RvR and how awesome of a concept it was. A PvP system like no other. It did eventually get old though as once I hit max level and had the best armor and weapons at the time, all I did was PvP. Hitting 500k RP's in the first 5 months of the game coming out took a lot out of me and eventually I got burnt out, but i still see it as one of the greatest mmo's.
GW is definitely one I see up there now too. Being busy w/ college, organizations, gf, work, and all that good stuff at once, this is the only game that I have found I can play casually and still have fun. Being in an awesome guild and having the chance to AB with a good group all the time, do the Deep, or gvg when I have more free time than usual makes this game my favorite for the moment. I have tried out FFXI, EQ2, and WoW and really just cant get into them b/c of time commitment. In GW though I have 2 sets of 15k armor, high end weapons, and almost all skills for all classes along with a ton of elite skills captured by just playing casually. It allows the casual gamer to feel like they're good at something w/o spending 50 hours a week playing it.
I have played AC1, AC2, EQ1, EQ2, DAOC, SWG (beta), WoW, FFXI, PS, and GW and I see AC1 at the top still. I hope new generation MMO's can bring back the fun that originally made the MMOG world as big as it is today.
me on this moment private server runescape whit spawn zo u cna get so much items u want clickinh on an hay bales and u a lvl higher whit magic ore defend close the door and u a lvl higher whit strenght attack a dummie and u a lvl higher whit attack but ife u reach lvl 80 everything going not so fast enymore the rest of skills are most get normal only 2 times faster (not so fast)
My first game was pre-Trammel Ultima Online back in early 1998. It was great.
Then I played Everquest. Didn't ever really get into EQ as much as most people. I think I was having a hard time getting into the 3D mmo experience and didn't really like it as much as UO at that time.
..Until Asheron's Call was released. Having loved other Microsoft games around the time AC was released, I bought it the day it was released. And I'd never regret it. Asheron's Call was the best mmo ever for me... and it STILL is. Other games have lots better graphics. Other games have bigger worlds and more players. But no mmo out there has the level of depth and just insane addicting level like good ol' Asheron's Call. It certainly wasn't my first mmo. it was actually my third. So I can't say that my first mmo is my favorite. For me, the third time was the charm. And it still is even after playing close to 40 different mmos now. AC is it. I also wish that Turbine would put some good love into their true classic hit and give it a new graphics engine and overhaul it with new servers and a fresh new package. But it won't happen, and that's just fine actually. Becuase it is still great just the way it is... even now. Insanely addicting, pure fun, and almost magical.
Asheron's Call is my favorite by a long shot... despite its dating graphics and lack of thousands of players per server.
Well. I like Blizzard games, they are really fun but I dont like games that you need to pay for. Basically i just stay with F2P games such as Runescape or Neopets. Ive tried these two games and frankly they are really childish. Both get boring after a years play.
Other games I like include BOTS, which is currently in open beta. Maple Story was alright but as more people played, it became too crowded. Last of all, Space Cowboys has really nice graphics... for its price (Free)
My first MMO to really get hooked on was Asheron's Call. I picked it up a year after it launched, when the original retail box was still lingering in stores. AC had the lowest system requirements for a 3d MMO at the time so it was a no brainer for me and my crappy, 90's PC
The wide, free roaming gameworld with an evolving story which the players actually took part in was something I'll probably never forget in online gaming. Also it has the most customizable character creation/advancement that I've ever experienced. It was fun to have a sword-user who could actually use magic and quite well at that. Now though, the game is old and decrepit. Questing was also a highlight; they just had an epic feel to them--such as exploring the lost city of Frore and defeating it's ancient inhabitants.
EQOA was my favorite MMO I've played to date, which is odd, as it really wasn't that great, especially when I played, as it didn't have the quests in the game past level 17, crafting hadn't been put in yet, and there was only really a handful of raid targets. It wasn't even my first MMO, I had a year of UO and 3.5 years of EQ under my belt by the time I got the game.
What made the game so great for me was my guild. It was probably the best bunch of people I've ever played with in an MMO, full of mature, bright people. Another odd thing, as EQOA had a pretty horrid community over all, consisting mostly of teens playing the free copy of the game they got when they bought a network adaptor to play Socom with. (Another great game.)
I only grouped with my guild really, and we rarely had trouble with others as we started when the server went up and kept ahead of everyone else, so we didn't run into other idiots. Eventually the content ran out though, and people slowly started leaving the guild. When the last few people in the guild began to quit, I did too. I didn't play it very long, only 5 months, but the best times I've ever had in an MMO.
mine would have to be guildwars, its the best out there and no monthly fees..period least favorite would be silkroad, ddo and eve. as for games you can check gamersloot.net for reference.
Mind blowing! It is extremely simple, yet it is complete and vast. The primary and secondary power sets is an awesome twist to the class system (ATs), allowing a great customisations. Fast is usually bad for me, in this case it is wonderful. Combats are flowing well and in a RPG ways, not an action way. Solo is fine, Group-system is incredible. Character customisation is not only in powers, but also in look, lot of fun making a costume even if you are usually not versed into that.
Accolades are a relatively weak answer even if I enjoy them, HOs and IoP are lames...nerfing is lame...these devs have such a jewel into their hand, it is a little like giving the best diamond you ever find to a miner who will break it into 9 smaller pieces! A shame really.
2 - Everquest
Extensive system with levels, spells, AAs, gear, races...the source of all MMOs! I really love that game...yet...it was Bradified into a raiding-trash game, where all-non-raiders are condemned before even playing...sooo much potential, all ruined by this raiding thingy...oh well.

Shadowbane- true PvP balanced for more than one vs one fights, politics, seige warfare in its highest form in a game so far.

If you could dream it, it could probably be done. I remember first starting out in UO. I knew nothing of the game except what I needed to know. Enter the sewers. Kill a few frogs and rats. -Great Fun and Boring(its nice)
Silkroad Online
-Great Storyline
-Great Graphic
-Free(the best)
-Great Fun
All in game i Like
these are very very interesting, im thinking of switching games
My fav mmorpg of all time, would have to be asherons cal 1, nothing has ever come close to that game.
went from AC1 to EQ1, was addicted to that for 4-5 years
Once WoW and EQ2 came out, i left EQ1 since the pop just about died
I tried WoW, but it just became repetitive.
Tried EVE, liked it alot, but catching up is not to easy since its all one big server, great game, just got in at the wrong time.
Right now im inbetween games, not sure what to play if anything, really waiting for warhammer online or something new to come along.
All the games I've played:
AO, AC1, AC2, Shadowbane, EVE, WoW, CoH, UO, Ryzom, Eq1, Eq2, SWG, FoM, AA, DAOC, Guild Wars, RF online, FFXI, Lineage 2, etc.
And out of all of them, Asherons Call 1, still holds a place close to my heart.
You never forget your first MMORPG
guildwars becose its team based , first thing you have to do is group with people before you go to action , i love it becose of that.

Nowadays I spend my time in EQ2.
I didn't play it very long, only 5 months, but the best times I've ever had in an MMO.
least favorite would be silkroad, ddo and eve. as for games you can check gamersloot.net
for reference.
1 - City of Villains/City of Heroes
