SWG was my FAVORITE game of all time everyting was different combat, transportation, crafting, mining, leveling, professions, languages, and my favorite building it just rocked but i left a little voice in my head just told me to leave i think i was getting to adicted so i left and then i heard about an update that pretty much destroyed the game. What did they do how can they make such a perfect game crap. what was in that update?

you haven't read about the NGE? Man, have you ever missed a lot.
Long story short, SOE thinks they're gods, and that they know everything about well... everything. Therefore, they decided that this was best for the game, which it wasn't, and now SWG populations are at an all time low
Go read the NGE change list, you will cry
where is this list give me a url pls
if you're too lazy to go to the SOE site, search for SWG NGE, then you need to get off your ass and do something
World of Warcraft seemed to convince people in LucasArts that the "problem" with SW:G (and we define "problem" in the terms of SW:G not having millions of subscribers) was that it was too difficult...inaccesable to the average Star Wars fan. With a few radical alterations SoE and LA managed to strip away a game with some interesting depth and unique game mechanics and distill it to accessable (and rather bland) gameplay.
Perhaps if the game was released that way it could have been in fine shape. But you simply cannot take a MMOG and radically alter the rules like SW:G did without causing some massive upheaval.
The MMOG genre has unbelievable word-of-mouth power. A bad release can really stymie growth. What's really amazing is that SoE and LucasArts have shown that you can take a good game and butcher it to the point that people view it no differently than a poorly-released game.
And yet two of the most unique and important things. No?
See i hate the nge and all, but if those really were the only 2 things missing i would still play.
The thing that isnt in that list thats missing however, is the player population..

Dunno about that either. With the Restuss event, during prime time there's at least 100 people in the city battling it out. Currently right now there's around 30-50 of us
Umm, everything in your list is stll in the game slick. Perhaps you would like to try again?

Oh Obraik, that's such a small number compared to the good old days.

Ya gotta forgive Obra... he's relatively new to SWG... he doesn't remember when 100 people were routinely just sitting around the cantina getting rid of fatigue or visiting the docs to get buffs or hell... just shopping at some of the better crafter's vendors...
100 people at an event? LOL I remember when entire servers would crash if too many people showed up to an event.... Hell we had a HUGE fight on Lok back on Lowca in Pre-CU... I think about 500 people were there.
100 people at Restus... who cares.
Matter of fact in Pre-CU just the ENTERTAINERS in the cantina would be like 40 people.
People who think '100 in the same place' is a lot of players just haven't ever played SWG when there were a LOT of people playing. Heck... Dant Mining Ouitpost used to have 100-200 people at it, not to mention the rest of the players out hunting.
Also, the statement by Obra is misleading in other ways:
1) There used to be 32 professions that you could mix and match however you wished to make your own unique character. Granted there were some FOTM builds but the fact was that if you wanted to be unique and different.... you could.
2) The advancement system was skill based.
3) The combat system was complex and required planning, thought and care.
4) Crafting was important. The best equipment in the game came from crafters.

That pretty much sums-up what happened to SWG.

Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
I loved SWG before the space expansion. There were bugs of course but SWG offered so many features no other MMO had at the time. PVP was great with base attacks and defenses. I remember AOE poisens/diseases being a bit overpowered.
When SOE continually delayed and then eventually told the community that they weren't going to do the combat revamp till after the space expansion I quit. I got fed up with SOE's attitude and lies.
To this day I refuse to play a SOE game or even buy a sony product. Their arrogance and complete disregard for their community has had extreme consequences.

Heh, relatively new? Been playing since launch thanks
The first 6 months of the game, sure maybe there was a ton of people in one spot. After that time though, no.
We're not talking about the one-time Restuss event here, we're talking about the Restuss battleground which is a permanent thing that appeals to those into PvP. The difference between over 100 people in the Dant MO/Corronet (not really true for Chilastra) and 100 people in the Restuss battleground is that the latter is specific to a certain playstyle, whereas Dant MO/Corronet attracted pretty much all playstyles.
Lets not also forget that Pre-CU focused on a centered population style. Everyone gathered in the one area for buffs, heals, sales, etc so you had a very good chance of seeing everyone if you just hung out there for the day. SWG in the NGE spreads everyone out across more then one planet, since there is no real need for everyone to be in a centric place anymore. Comparing populations based on that isn't really accurate.

Obra: I've seen the server populations pre and post NGE. There is no way you can tell people it's got as many people now. No way. Sure it's not vacant but the numbers just don't back you up. Post NGE the game has FAR fewer players. Even MMORPGCHART.COM lists it at 110-125k players (down from 250k last November).

I like Pre-NGE just like the next person and would rather have that combat style and skill leveling back, but I think all of you are looking through rose colored eyeglasses.
This is what I did in a typical Pre-NGE day. Go to MO, grind for xp, run to the FS Village, rinse and repeat. Occasionally I would go to Kash for a mission or trail or to DWB. I would RP some also. None of this sounds too exciting, which is why I quit BEFORE the Pre-NGE.
Now because the NGE hit, I was interested in seeing what the fuss was all about. So I resubbed. This is what I did in a typical day. I checked my quest log for what quest was next. Then I proceeded to completing it. That was about it for the first 18 levels. After that I quit.
The conclusion is that the game wasn't all that great before the NGE and if you were honest with yourself, you would admit that the boards were full of people who wanted changes and didn't like A LOT of the game. SOE gave us those changes, although they were different then what we asked for. They took away something to give us something as usual. The combat is crap in my opinion compared to before, but crafting can still be done, entertainers and doctors can still be played as well. Maybe not exactly like before, but when I was playing Doctors were rare anyways and Entertainers were mostly AFK in cantina's. All I'm saying is that Pre-NGE was no where near perfect or even that great of a game like you all try to make it seam. You all just haven't played it in a while and everything starts to look really good when you haven't had it in a while. The only thing that is a game killer for me in the NGE is the lack of population or should I say the lack of population that wants to group or RP. Now it's just like WOW where you can quest alone for the majority of the time.
Speaking of community. I always thought that the community was a little immature and complained way too much. This only shows through all the immaturity going on in the SOE forums on this website. A mature person would leave people alone if they want to play the game and wouldn't flame them. A mature person would have let spoken with their dollar, sent in a complaint, but would not keep ranting about it 9 months later. This shows me that the community was crap and the people I'm missing out on if I did go back to SWG is better left gone anyways.
Just something to think about.
Blizzard created World of Warcraft . . . SOE saw the huge success and had to copy it, and SWG would never be the same.
Even Everquest II has taken some things from WoW, only to a much lesser extent, and EQ2 is a similar type of game when compared to World of Warcraft, whereas Star Wars Galaxies was unlike any other mmorpgs. Now SWG is just like any other, and not even as good as most.
Based on Previously known data, I put the total number of subscribers for SWG at 190,000 for March 2006. Since that time another source has indicated SWG may have only 110,000 total subscribers.

First let me explain a bit about myself. I'm a long time MMO player. There really isn't an mmo out there that I haven't at least tried. I'm also a HUGE science fiction fan. My first MMO was Earth and Beyond and the reason I loved it had little to do with the game and everything to do with the story. I'm also a huge fan of science fiction and space games. From the X-wing series, to Homeworld, to Nexus the Jupiter Incident, to Starfleet Commander. Basically I'm the type of player that should love a Star Wars MMO (MMO player, loves space games, and loves science fiction).
I tried SWG when it was popular and guess what? I hated it. For one Star Wars is not about being on a planet and hunting mobs. It's about space. Big ships, big battles, lots of action. SWG had NONE of that for a long time. When it did, it wasn't exciting. Aside from not being in space there were way too many professions and ways to create a character. Their problem was they wanted to give players the ability to do anything and everything without really giving them the power to do so. I mean if your going to give players 37 different professions why not just dump the whole idea and give them an open skill system?
A Star Wars MMO should easily be able to attract a huge audiance. It never did and the problem was that it never felt like the Star Wars Universe. Sure they had the locations and scenery, but not the atmosphere. So they tried to correct it but it was too much and too late.
So there you have it, that is my opinion. And before you go flaming me for explaining how I feel and telling me my opinion doesn't matter, remember I'm the type of player that game needs.
LucasArts made the fatal flaw of hiring the developers of EverQuest...who proceeded to make EverQuest in the Star Wars universe.
They should have hired a fresh face...or maybe FunCom, who had experience with the genre and experience with the subgenre. But all that is water under the bridge.
There was nothing about original SWG that shared similarities with EQ.
And Funcom at the time had created a nightmare for themselves called launchday of their first game which still is a milestone mark of how not to launch a game.
