Shadowbane is a game that needs no review, the game status, the dismal playerbase, and the fact that the only way they can maintain the remaining fanbois is by not charging them to play the game speak for Shadowbane themselves. Seriously, I have no idea why any sane person would play this disaster of an MMO.

You obviously didn't play back in the glory days of this MMO. Yes, it was laggy, yes it had horrible mechanics. Yes, it was the best pvp game of its time. A game with freedom to kill whoever you want, wherever you want and then take all their loot. A game where players banded together to form alliances to build their cities and leave their mark in the game world. A game which was totally governed by player politics. A game where sieges involved more than destroying the other clan, it was also about destroying their city that they worked so hard trying to build. This game is very out of date now, and that is why most people don't play it anymore. You can't compare it to the games that are out now, but the theory behind this game was better than any game that followed. Would you rather get together with your friends and raid a rival clan's city, or would you rather grind forever in a stupid instance with 40 other people repeatedly until you want to chop off  your own penis.

You just described Ultima Online, years ago, when it was released.  That game did not suck, in fact some people still say it was the best PvP game EVER(back then).

Wouldnt that make Shadowbane atleast the SECOND best pvp game ever(or the best since all the other games are now watered down carebearfests, even Ultima Online), since its almsot exactly the same, except now you can burn the players towns down.

Funny you should say that, because I was there in beta and into the "glory days". I was on what was considered the most exciting servers (think it was Chaos, but don't remember exactly). I was one of the first into 40's and was involved in the building, maintenance, shop owning, and seiges.

With all that I have to say the OP is dead on, no more explaination needed to his review.

The only reason the lag got better is everyone left.

the fact that you know what level you were and not what server you where on tells me that you should never have been in shadowbane to begin with.

the rest of it, you don't really know what you are talking about.

Shadowbane was the best in its "glory days."  When you were at a bane and there were 200 people there trying to tear down YOUR city which took you months to build and you were fighting for your very game exsistance.  Now that is a game.  You played hard and were played hard back.  The people who made Shadowbane could have had a much better run had they not realeased it with so many problems but I played for 2 years and don't regret it.  Best game I ever played and I have played most of them.  And for all you exShadowbaners ... was there ever anything better than ganking someone at a disc drop and finding the disc on their corpse LOL it was great.  Everytime you pked someone you never knew what they might have on them.

Shadowbane owns. Too much sand in your vagina? Too few nightlights on where your at? Not enough milk in your ba-ba? Your cuddle blankie not soft enough? Your teddy bear got a hole in it? Your dipar need changing? Great, go play WoW.

    Oi?

This is a great game, its just a bit dated.  It is the quinesential PvP game.  You can PK your grandma in this game and no one would bat an eye and you (as a guild) can destroy a guild and all its assets.  There is random PvP, resource driven PvP, guild organized PvP and sieges.

Its also has a very complex character creation, so many classes, options and races. Most complex I have ever seen.  Easy to create a gimp character, all newbie will reroll, even the vets reroll from time to time.

People who say it sucks are only looking at game mechanics.  It had a lot of issues, still has a few.

Carebear crafters need to leave there tools at the front door and pick up a sword in this game.

Only crafting is done by town owners who own the shops, NPCs do all the work, town owners just say what to make... 4 hours later ya got a sword or armor or whatever.

anyway I enjoy the game for its freedom, some jerk pisses me off... I just kill him.

Shadowbane was my first MMO and still to this day remains close to my heart.  Compared to what other games offer SB is not as strong as EQ2, WoW, DDO and FFXI... but if had to pick between GW or SB... it would be SB all the way.

I don't play for graphics and the PvP system is the best in the industry.  I love the way player cities work... it really is merciless.  I really should not feed the trolls but... I am sure this 10 yrd will go back an play EQ or WoW.

I can remember a time when SB was THE hottest thing comin´. Everyone and their friends wanted to play it, and play it NOW. New ideas, a pvp system that enhances the role and importance of community, it had it all. I knew literally 100s of people in UO who couldn´t wait for it. The guild I was in, (biggest or 2nd on europa shard) already had the SB website going way before beta.

We would have ignored almost every flaw, the abysmal beta (I was in), the bugs, the lag, all of it old news for people playing UO in the 90s. But then they went and made it impossible (or atleast very complicated) for european players to play on the US servers and vice versa.

Now, what does a guild with app. 40% US players and 60% EU players when such a thing happens ?
    - Right, they take the SB-site off the net and go play something they can play together....

Now, I don´t know if it became possible for US and EU players to be together in the meantime, but the point is , it´s irrelevant. After blowing the bubble to enormous size and then violently popping it with the continent separation, everybody moved on.

From my point of view, this was what robbed SB the chance to be massively approved.

It was due to the publishers.  It was fixed less than a year after release tho, that both could play together.

Shadowbane was hilarious. Played for about 9 months at launch, and the PvP is still the best i've seen. Nothing like wreaking havoc in a guild of 20-30 hardcore peeps and having the entire rest of the server out for your blood. Back in that day, not everyone had Vent though :) which put us at a real advantage since we did.

Had some great times in Shadowbane...pure hardcore pvp fun. If the mechanics weren't so jacked up (server crashing during seiges, etc), I might not have stopped.

My biggest complaint? Levelling was WAY too easy. It made the lower levels totally meaningless except as a grind to get through them.

    I cant disagree more.

I have recently come back to Shadowbane after leaving WoW.  WoW is fun for what it is.  Unfortunately, even with WoW's pretty package, there are too many retention mechanisms (rep grinds, raid timers) and limitations on characters to be fun for more than a few months.

Shadowbane just gives me so much.  I can create characters and play them how I see fit.  Cent Bow Druid anyone?  Thats not possible in most other MMO's I have played.  Many times in WoW, I have had someone pop off at the mouth and I prayed that they would leave a safezone so I could PK them....then  I remembered thats not possible in WoW.

Technical issues and security "issues" aside, I have never had so much free flowing fun than Shadowbane.

Now.....when is Shadowbane 2 coming?  A man can dream, cant he?

    NOT AS GOOD AS DDO???

What are you smoking? DDO yeah the game that gets Insanely repetitive...and wait ! WHATS THAT--

NO PVP IN DDO YA MORON

    Final Fantasy..omg...THAT ISNT PVP EITHER

What are you basing your absurd opinions on...carebear baby butt whiping ability? Yeah wow holds your hand...and the graphics are fancy. But if all these games were on a equal lvl graphics wise...updated wise... SB and WOW would be the only two standing imo.

Think of this for a moment...

In WoW, Daoc, EQ2 and DDO can you make and run your own city?

Can you kill anyone practically anywhere?

    Can you loot there body?

    Can you run a shop?

Can you bane someones city and make it your own?

Everyone may be driving a gas driven car in this world, but does that make it good for the world? No

Everyone may be playing Wold of Warcraft, but does that make it good? No

If everyone jumps off a cliff, are you going to?

Hell World of WARcraft has NO WAR in it... Shadowbane has a better war system than a game that was suppost to BE ABOUT WAR!

    1. they should have changed what dropped the discs so the people in beta couldnt powerlevel and then control the disc sites as well as cherry pick the best city locations.

    2. You level too fast and didnt have enough time to make friends in game to group and guild up with. If you didnt come into the game with a guild or a solid group of friends you were at the mercy of those who raced to 50 so they could kill all the unguilded 20's.

    4. While the ui was pretty configurable the icons were too damn small and i dont remember having the ability to hot key various spells or attacks.

    5. Having to move via mouseclick ugh

    6. Lag and rubberbanding were there wasnt even anyone around.

    7. wonderful sb.exe

I imagine if you can ignore all that and everything else that sucked it might not have been too bad.

6 and 7, largely issues of the past.  They both still happen but no worse than any other game I've played and better than many;  this issue was largely caused by wolfpacks lack of funds in the beginning.

4 and 5, this has always been a weak spot for SB, especially for new players coming from other MMO's.  I remember being totally confused about movement in my first week, but it hasn't been an issue in three years for me now.  Its just one of those things, you adapt and it stops being an issue or it doesn't and you stop playing I guess.

2, this game really isn't about that, and 99% of the players wouldn't have it any other way.  I started with an existing guild on Death server but also played on my own on Mourning.  I meet plenty of people and was in a guild before I left the island, and while the guild I came with on Death is long gone, my mourning guild still exists and I still know players there.  The endgame however is where SB shines and how its intended to be played; More of my friends are people I fought against and came to respect, then joined with later.

1, the point of the game is guild fighting, and there needs to be something to fight about.  Sure, the beta guilds got the jump on things by knowing locations, but a few months into the game that was old news and no longer much of a factor.  Everyone's been on the same level for years now, and I don't believe there is one single beta guild in its original form or even close left in SB.  Guilds change, adapt, merge and breakup, it happens.

mostly to me it sounds like your judging shadowbane by issues that haven't existed or mattered in almost the entire life of the game (aside from mouseclick movement, if you really hate that one, I guess you're right hehe) and that, not to be a jerk at all, but SB maybe wasn't the game for you if you enjoy long grinds.

Me and a few m8's rolled chars on Wrath the other day, seems a pretty
cool server. Got ganked by some r6 dude while r2 who then grouped us
and pl'ed us a bit, then the next night the same thing happened.

Tbh, £0 to get and £0 a month for a game with probably the best pvp
ruleset around atm is easily the best value for money in the mmo world
atm. Would rather play this where i can play for an hour or so in one
night and feel like i'm still making progress in lvlling and having
some of the most fun pvp i've had for years.

Not perfect very buggy and a control system that takes alot of getting
used to, but if u enjoy pvp theres not much out there that has anything
    better to offer.

Find this game makes the perfect compliment to guild wars.
