I'm tired of all these new games coming out in the fantasy category having all the same classes. There is the leader, the melee , the archer, and the priest. They may have different names and one or two different kind of attacks, but they really are all the same. These classes are all well and good, but I want something i haven't seen before. One suggestion would be an adventurer like Indiana Jones, carries a whip and uses his cunning against his opponents. I would also like to know what suggestions you have for new classes.

There are only so many base classes I think, having played pen and paper RPG's for 15 years I have yet to see any more "base" class. Indiana Jones for example would be a mix of Rogue/scholar.
Horizons for example has 49 classes, all very diverse but at the core are the base 6 or 7. Pretty much anything i can think up originate there, from paralyzed vegetable in a hospital to a God like player character.
Maybe with city of heroes we will see something new, as the classes pretty much fits the game and to have new classes you would need an entirely new playworld with new goals and concepts, we shall see..

I agree with the previous posts, there are only so many classes to be had. Everything else fantasy related is just a variation of the base class. Maybe they should let players play as the mobs, that would make for some interesting PvE

How do you code "uses his cunning"?
In the end, the huge risk involved in trying something completely different is antithetical to the multi-million dollar investments involved in the development of MMOGs.
if they made a mmorpg out of grand theft auto, that would be cool, using gun of whoa or something
The good news as the genere becomes widely accepted the more will be willing to take risks to try to capture a market.
City of heroes for example is something away from the norm.

I loved the no-class approach in Eve.
Just have skills and let people follow their own path. Seems like a good approach to me.
The downside is that I kinda lost my way with my avatar which I think was the source of my frustration with the game.
Perhaps a good comprimise might have been a semi class driven system where all skills and abilities are available to everyone but taking certain skills / abilities makes it harder to learn others but not impossible.

I just hope games like City Of Heroes survive in the market. Sure they are diffrent, but there are not many people willing to risk 50$ + $12a month to play a game that may flop... but I guess that is what may happen to all MMORPG's.
Anyhow, God Bless COH, I hope it turns out awsome.
Actullay some of the EVE skills were harder ( or at least Longer) ot learn than others, and part of that depending on your starting choices. I did like that if you choose carefully and the right race to start and the right clan you could actually start at like level 4 pilot , enginnering or mining skills.
I played AC II for a number of months and I actually thought some of the classes in the game were if anything, refreshing... The lugian tactician for example was a very unique and new class... Essentially it was a melee class (wrench but you could construct walls and then turrets to fight enemies. Sure they were over powered from the start but that doesn't mean they weren't fun. Thats why DAoC copied them with the... ummmm I don't know but they made mushroom turrets but no walls...
You may say I'm a dreamer
I'm not the only one
I hope some day you will join us
And the world will live as one
Thinking of strange days
And wet-dream escapades
Oh this summer is sweet sleep
Because we are living day dreams
CoH is ok, but I know it would be alot more popular if they had PvP.
As far as classes go. What other classes can you have ? I mean try to think of one instead of whining about it cause I sure can't. Even AO which is Sci Fi follows the generic base classes. You know why ? Cause no matter what you come up with it will probably be a take off a pre existing base class anyways. This isn't a status quo thing or a marketing thing. The fact is these "base" classes are IT, and all you can come up with is proffessions that just build up on the original concept.

"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas."
Exactly thats the problem with making your own character skill based like UO and SWG did.
Once folks have figured out whats the uber combo half the server will be that.In UO everyone and his granny when i played was a tank mage(1997-1999).
In SWG most folks are commandos/BH who are combat based.
The idea of pick and mix is a great one but maintaing the balance is very very hard unless the game is made group oriented.
Besides, in the 30 or so + years since Dungeons and Dragons were released, and the massive amount of RPG's after that, if no one has come up with a new base type yet I vety much dount anyone ever will.
Even wacko games like paranoia or HOL (human occupied landfill) have their classes based on these.
