Lateral advancing confirmed!!!!

In a recent interview linked up there, Mythic has confirmed how WAR will follow a lateral advancing scheme than a vertical one.

This was a motive of concern for some fans of the game (well, at least one, that's me) as a vertical advancing system (same as WoW, EQ2, Lineage2, EQ etc) is not very appropriate for an intense, pvp-centric game as a maxxed level player has no chance of deafeat against hordes of lower levels.

What lateral advancement means? Figures UO or SWG PRE-NGE. as you progress in the game, you get more and different skills and moves to make you more versatile and do more things than before.

Your hit points and magic points, however, do not rise exponentially like in other games.

What this means is that a veteran is STILL much stronger than a newbie 1 vs 1 thanks to his superior training, but he cannot just walk over legions of poor noobs. he have to watch out for them too as a well organized group can take him down.

This also means a more tactical and skill-based combat system.

Overall, great news for WAR!

This does sound good. I loved SWG before they completly buggered up the skill system.

I cant wait to start ganging up on a powerful player with a bunch of my newbie friends :D

yup yup it is good news, one of the things that got on my nerves about WoW.  Gear and level based PvP.

Me too... It honestly was one of the best MMOs I ever played.

Anyway, this bodes well for WAR. Huzzah.

I'm glad they're using lateral advancement. Planetside had it too and that was a great game. Low level players actually had a chance against higher level players if they had the skill.

Now that sounds awesome! I loved how SWG had that, i went back to SWG after quitting because all my friends left, but when i got back it had all changed so i immediately uninstalled it. >.<

i loved the swg skill system.

does this mean no more levels above yo' head? i'd love not to be categorized based on some gay number.

If this is true, I think I've found a new home. Classic SWG was a pearl that the swine at $OE never appreciated.

I thought they had already done away with that and put in a visual aspect that would tell you how powerful the character was...i.e. if an ork player sees a dwarf with a long ass beard he better watch out.

Does this mean (I might be reading this wrong) that we don't really see a traditional "Level 1, Level 2, ....Level (Max Cap)" Advancement? Instead focuses more on end game abilities gained from advancement? That sounds awesome!

  • VolkmarVolkmar Member UncommonPosts: 2,501

Well, numbers to express how powerful you are will be there, of course, but prolly won't be expressly visible (or then the whole "My char grows bigger and tougher as i progress" goes all out of the window), but such things do not necessarily means the guy is walking God, more than he is a goddamn veteran warrior and a danger to anyone.

Figure SWG, if you would see a Master Bounty Hunter, you would know that guy had some serious training and combat experience to get there, but it would not mean that he could exterminate whole bases of Rebels by its own.

This is the same, see a 7.6 feet tall black orc with a choppa as big as you? He is prolly make mincemeat of your sorry ass, now the same guy against you and 4 of your ironbreakers fellow with linked shields? well, another story entirely.

Sounds to me more like just balancing the game just will be balanced more  so newer people (and therefore lower level) won't be so frightened if they are in a group of other low people and see a maxxed out character. Good though, since I was tired how in WoW on my PvP server that a friend of two would be wiped out from someone 40 levels higher than us.

And it makes more sense with the warhammer universe, doesn't it? I mean, at least from what I played in W40K (the rts), numbers are very important. You can have a very powerful unit, yet you will lose if you rely on it alone, specially when facing a large numbers of enemies.
Within every enemy there is a potential assassin. Watch your back ;)

     Absoulatly Amazing news!

I was thinking that this maybe my new home too, after playing everything out there after I left SWG, and finding a whole world of rubbish.

WoW was the only thing that held me for any ammount of time, just over 5 months but so bored of it now, so been watchng this with bated breath and this news has just made me a 100% die hard fan of this now.

With the following that SWG Pre CU had put together with fans of any or all of GamesWorkshops products, plus on top of that, the people that play WoW but long for something lateral, AND on top of all that that fact that Gamesworkshop inspired games have all been major hits and amazing games too, makes me belive that this wont just be a great game to play, it should ave no problems at all in getting and keeping severs full

At last someone has seen the light, as someone else said above, SWG Pre CU had it, but just didnt realise what they had, how stupid are they going to look now when EA owned Mythic with Gamesworkshop take there idea and bring it alive again, stealing what was left of the player base lol

Just one cocern tho, WoW is full of imature idiots, which is one of the main reasons I left, Im not saying everyone and Im not saying all those imature people are kids, but lets face it there were far fewer idiots on SWG, why because it was alot harder to get into, I really really do hope that WAR is not easy to play, well not as easy as one button WoW

    YES!!!!!!

I've been waiting years for an mmo that DOESN'T use the stupid level system. I loved how UO was. Levels in an mmo are stupid.

Im with you on this! I was looking forward to Warhammer Online anyway but no lvls is great news to hear as a SWG refugee.

When I first heard about WAR a long time ago, I was positive they would have a level system much like WoW. I thought it was going to be the game that was pretty much a WoW clone, but would slightly exceed it's PvP so it would steal a bunch of subscrubers from WoW.

This makes me extremely happy to hear about this class based leveling system. As long as the graphics don't turn out too cartoony, and the PvP has a point to it, I think I may have find a new home.

To be honest, this sounds a lot like EVE's system. As you train skills, more equipment is opened up for you to use, but since your ship can only use so many at once, you need to choose which ones you want to use carefully.
