Gah, some great Ideas coming up here. It seems to me that a neutral Force Adept would be a very attractive prospect for alot of people. Remember Kreia in Kotor2? She was pretty much neutral till the end. But even then she wasn't evil, she was logical.
So we've got how to deal with the jedi down. How about other prospective classes?
I'm thinking we should take alot from SWG, the original professions were great. I knew just as many people who wanted to be a rifleman as they did an entertainer. There was good balance there, and every profession had a way of making money, which was good.
A military officer position would be pretty cool. Not a commando but an actual officer. Like say you were a Republic officer, you could operate a Republic battle station. The other personel would have to be NPC, but you could also have other Republic friends help you defend. What do you think?
Linguist - What would really be nice is for there to be an actual language barrier between races (I see this playing out in two ways, either making the community really strong or destroying it, could you imagine guilds of specifically Humans, Twi-Leks, Wookiees etc. Alot of possibilties for alliances/enemies. Maybe this Human guild just doesn't like wookiees, so their enemies. It's a better reason to fight than my guild leader pwns your guild leader. I'd still see you being able to learn maybe one language on the side of your native language. Have the Linguist class be able to teach more for a price right? This could be a very deep language system.
Miner - I still don't understand why this wasn't in the original SWG.In All Honesty, i didn't like the 100s of resource shops that popped up when Radioactive Ircadium's (just made that up) resistancy shot up. Everyone should have the potential to learn to mine, not everyone already "know" how to mine naturally.
Exterminator - Simply a BH equivelant, instead of NPC/Player bounties. They could have creature bounties.
Spy - We had Smugglers but no Spy's in SWG. Big possibilities with the whole Bothan Spy story lines. Having an actual stealth class would be great.
Race specific classes would be awesome too.
And for god's sakes more than one type of vibroknuckler
just to go undercover and leaching the cat out of the bag, the angry players of swg are making private servers of there beloved system of swg's, the pre-CU. They are making it out from scratch to bring the fun back then the evil and forced place system, the NGE that cause the anger of every single swg player. Help those people out and they will surly give you a fun mmorpg to play. Not only that, but it's free from the greedy hands of SOE. So you don't have to spend a single penny from there dead hands.

If i remember right it was Surverying/Extracting you could learn. But anyone could throw a harvester down. That's what i mean.

I would have to think that a good dtar wars game would attracts tons of people. But Jedi do present a problem for balance. I would want to be a jedi from the start if I played, but then I be overpowered. I dunno its tricky. Just make everyone Jedi !
I have a somewhat radical suggestion. Drop every class (at least ordinary classes). Have an entire skillbased system. Then after gaining a pre-determined set of skills, you are eligible for entrance in class-orientet guilds (not player guilds). Some guilds are commonly known (e.g. crafters guilds), others are secret, but their existance is known (e.g. Bounty Hunter) others again are totally secret. The level of requirements may vary from guild to guild, and a player may join more than one guild (possibly some guilds may be opposite to another guild i.e. members of one guild are excluded/denied membership of another guild).
Members of these guilds get special perks (like training in exclusive skills, access to bounties access to cool equipment/schematics). One don't have to be a member of a guild, but every player will at some point be eligable to membership in some.
I am not proposing to drop player-guilds, as I think they are vital to the social aspect of the game, an aspect of GREAT importance.
Also, make the powerful loot schematics, so crafters get busy!!
If Jedi is introduced, make it a balanced alpha. Balanced so it is extremely powerful (as they indeed were in the movies), but balance that with unhealable wounds/permadeath/skillloss or something that makes it difficult to play.
I would prefer kotor era, as there you have both sides (jedi/sith) and they could be balanced against each other as well.
Finally, even if jedi/sith is introduced, DO NOT FORGET THE OTHER PLAYERS!!!
Edit: I forgot to say that I also would like a permament PvP system (like EVE). But that is dependant on a great number of guards in the "protected areas", to stop ganking of newbies
As much as people like to slate SOE for their attempt at a SW MMO, They DID do a decent job. It's a very, very difficult MMO to pull off, and the way the game was originally handled by SOE was fantastic. Sure, the NGE wasn't great (although I'm quite liking it), but the original game they produced was sound.
I honestly don't think anybody, no matter how competent, could do a better job.
