Koster's summary of the NGE:
"I'll make an exception for the NGE. I don't think you can or should
change a game that radically out from under a user base. You dance with
the ones that brung ya, whether they are the market of your dreams or
not. They have invested their passion and built expectations about
where they want the game to go. Changing things out from under them
isn't fair in my mind, especially given how they have been loyal to you
in times of trouble. It's like dumping the girlfriend who has always
been patient and loving to chase after the supermodel who probably
won't love you back."
The NGE is a terrible mistake.
'nuff said.

Are u telling me that there are actually NGE fanboys here? where did they come from, shouldnt they just play, or do they miss their playerbase
Oh the entire story is here http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/87557
*whispers* Obraik.
It is too bad our cheif pontificator, Squdi, is not here to set us straight on what Raph Koster really means.
But then again, he was always wrong, so he finally bowed to the wisdom of the community, which as Raph points out, is the core of an MMO.
Please explain why I should care what Koster has to say? Never have before...
What exactly is he leading? The blog movement?
"There's no star system Slave I can't reach, and there's no planet I can't find. There's nowhere in the Galaxy for you to run. Might as well give up now."
Boba Fett
Because Koster is the guy that created SWG in the first place. Duh, learn some history...
He was lead designer of how SWG was at launch. He also designed Ultima Online.
Seriously, if you dont care what he says or ask why you should care, then you are clueless about MMO history.
And in that case, ur a newb.
What exactly is he leading? The blog movement?
His resume is on his website... but UO, the original SWG design, a book on Game Design, his blog, so certainly more accomplished than the NGE fanboios.
Dear Raph Blasters:
Raph is head and shoulders above the current SWG dev team. Take time to read his writings and you will realize that he, unlike his successors, takes time to analyze the impact of his design decisions before coding and releasing them on an unsuspecting public.
He spends time analyzing and theorizing on fundamental issues such as what fun is and how to include a variety of different types of people into the same game without watering down the experience for anybody.
The current dev team spends no time analyzing anything other than how much more money WoW has made than SWG and releases code that waters down EVERYBODY'S experience and excludes numerous types of people from the game.
Which of the previous two paragraphs is good for a game? It's a No-Brainer, but those of you with no brains still won't answer the question properly.
I realize I said I quit. I never said it was forever
He WAS an industry leader, he WAS. Now he is NOT. There is a difference. The stuff is in the past and no longer exist. He hasnt done anything in 3 years.
I know what games he did in the PAST, thats not what I was asking. I was asking what he is leading right now, which is nothing, the reason for my blog comment because thats all hes doing. A book isnt going to get pre-cu back nor is his wily blogging.
I hate the NGE as much as basically everybody else, but there is no reason to kiss this guys ass the way you all do.

Unfortunately, the guy is handcuffed by the fact he cannot, by himself, fund the creation of his "dream-MMORPG". So he ends up working on somebody else's dime, and inevitably, the need to take over the whole project overtakes the financiers. Until he self-funds a game of his own, or finds truly hands-off investors or executives, this will be his story.
And actually, his wily blogging serves to support those of us who keep up the fight, especially when he speaks negatively towards the NGE.

I understand that he cannot fund his design, not many can alone. But unfortunately it will never happen, unless there is a big "sandbox" movement in the industry. Developers dont want to waste time on sandbox style games, easy "omg level up mang lol i r own" games are easier to make, and take less time, and appeal to the larger gamer population, young'ns. Yes it sucks ass but there isnt anything me or you can do about it, but sit back and play crappy games that are out now.
I think its just time to move away from MMO's for me and go back to single player RPGs. Ive had more fun playing Oblivion for the past few days than I have in WoW and EQ2 combined for the past week.

Spot On Spathotan. Once I get a spare $20 million or so, I'll talk to him about a nice space-based sandbox MMORPG. Of course, that will have to wait until after I upgrade dinners from Macaroni and Cheese with Beans to Hamburger and Fries.
I realize I said I quit. I never said it was forever
ill play it as long as i enjoy it, thanks.

And Raph is right... Virtual world games ARE the future because as the MMO market gets more and more saturated it is going to be too expensive to continually create directed content a la WoW.

It puzzles me why so many idolise Ralph since he was employed as a designer on an MMO and then bailed when he saw a train wreck coming. Not that I disagree with what he did, as I'd have done the same if I was in his shoes, get out while the goings good.
However I've noticed a similar situation with "Vanbois", they idolise Brad Mcquaid (I think that's his name) like some kind of MMO messiah. Brad this and Brad that and "Brad says it will be the best MMO ever so it must be true!", yet the guy did much the same as Ralph and bailed out 6 months into it going live. I don't have a problem with that, as the guy is just doing a job and maybe he didn't like the job after the game went live and decided to hand in his notice.
Why do gamers seem to praise these guys like they know something other designers/developers don't? I mean if I was to believe all the fanbois, the only things Ralph and Brad need to make an MMO are 5 loaves and 2 fish!
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

What find funny is that before everyone bitched about Kostners sandbox gameplay idea's and critisized them and now that he is speaking out against SOE everyone thinks he is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
