Hey guys, I'm an old school MUD player and one of my favorite games of all time was the Quest For Glory series, where I would always play the thief character. Lately in games, all I can find are "rogue" classes that only focus on agility and combat and very little of actual thieving such as lock picking, pick pocketing, stealing and being out of sight. Not to mention making a buck on someone elses hard work, like a real thief should. I prefer the subtle aspects of the class instead of the flashy dagger wielding tornados that people have made Rogues into...just make a ninja class already. Any games out there you guys might point me to? Thanks!
WoW (aka World of Warcraft) currently has the best ever, most well done, Thief Class out of any MMORPG in history.
The amount of things that can be done are litterally too numerous to list....
Included, among TONS of things, are the ability to pickpocket. And the things one can do with this! You can pickpocket litterally any type of loot. Including chests off enemies. (Then use your lockpicking skill to pick the lock on the chests.)
- Lockpicking. Rogues/Thief Class can go anywhere in the entire game. Pick any lock.
- Stealth, Fade (during a fight if 50 enemies suddently jump you, you Fade and lose ALL aggro.) Kind of like Feign Death in EQ that Monks can do. Nothing like picking pockets off enemies 5-25 levels higher than you! Knowing IF you get caught you face such a quick death... that no words could describe how quick your death will be! Rogues are the only ones who can go into the most dangerous areas undetected!
WoW rogues have an insane number of choices of moves they can do while stealthed.
- Duel Wield 2 weapons at the same time, including ... SWORDS! As well as use crossbows, regular bow and arrow, throw knives, and much, much, more.
---------------
I almost forgot... WoW also has NPC rogues heeh. The only major enemy to player controled rogues. Nothing like having a NPC rogue sneak up on you! LOL!
--------------- Shadowbane (SB) has roughly 50k accounts. It relased sooo late, kept getting pushed back, that it lost every chance to make a noticeable mark in the mmorpg market. It has enough players to stay afloat, but there is a reason why it now is free. Because it is in danger of getting shut down from lack of PAYING players. It had such a mass exodus after it relased. Most players from DAoC checked it out, then went back to DAoC.
WoW has roughly 3+ million accounts. This means no chance at all of it being in danger of getting shut down.
The ONLY thing SB rogues might have over WoW rogues, is in SB you can steal from other players. Though there are rumors that in WoW it is possible to steal from other players too. I have not been able to see if this is true in WoW.
nope nice try, WoW isnt great for thieving ..... if they are so great then why havent i or anyone else been pick pocketed yet? i mean really try thinkin of somethin other then WoW, or if its on yr mind so much, go play it!

EQ2 does a pretty good thief class.... DDO does an awesome thief class.. unfortunately it's dying already... no telling how much longer it'll have players. They appear to be leaving in droves.... /who only showing 200-300 players per server at peak time these days... which is really sad. 3 months ago it was over 600 per server at peak time. I still enjoy it enough to keep grabbing free trials now and then But it's definitely very vacant now.
Other than that..... hmm there aren't really any good thieves in MMO's anymore... unless you want to do shadowbane or UO.

Don't diss on UO or Pre-NGE SWG there chief. Both were awesome games. If it weren't for UO you wouldn't have an MMO to play.

Is it me, or did someone respond to my post without reading a single line? Especially the last paragraph of my above post? LOL!
Ah yes, the too often forgotten and poorly implemented thief class. I have always loved stealth and played all 3 Thief games as well as tons of fan missions. But I've never got a real good thief-like experience in an MMO.
I leveled a rogue to 60 in WoW and felt the class was sorely lacking in thiefy skills as well as usefulness in general. I did try the DDO trial, however, and my rogue there was much more in tune with what a thief should be. I can't speak too much about the actual game though, as I don't have the time to commit to any MMOs right now.
Some upcoming games are unfortunately having a backlash against stealth though. It seems that players really don't like one class basically having invisibility. I know Warhammer Online is one game that the developers have already stated that there will be no stealth classes.
Oh well, maybe a few of the games other people mentioned will be better for taffers
Unfortunately the decline of a true thief class is part of the dummying down process that is mainstream in most MMOGs now.
In the Realm, a thief could pickpocket, break into houses, use a form of invisibilty, but there were also countermeasures in place that other classes could use to prevent or diminish the thieves abilities and success along with the everpresent option to PvP a thief.
As long as the game design offers a balance for non thieves to deal with thieves, then having a real thief class just enhances the game world. But alas, the whiners don't want to have to be proactive in dealing with thieves, because it takes effort and planning, and there seem to be more and more instant gratification type players who cry incessantly that thieves ruin their gaming experience.

Eve-Online allows "thiefing" particularly corp thiefs are notorious. But it requires lots of work and dedication, and patience. You may get lucky, and you may not. Also allows pirates too...
