I'd say it's worth it to a certain degree. I found it hard to learn at first but later on it's quite fun. Although I would rather play DnL than this, sorry.

Oh how funny!  I was reading the earlier posts in this topic and I was thinking the same thing here.  You ALMOST put down word for word what I was going to say.

I also love this game!  It is different than most in the respect that you have a real reason to get to certain lvls.  Lvl 18, you get a Sub-Job.   Lvl 20, you get to ride Chocobo's and Lvl 30, you get to pick your higher classes.   It really keeps me in the game just for these reasons.

The only complaint that I have had with the game, (playing for 3 months) is that casting is sometimes too slow when you really need them to be faster.  I play a white mage, so I just feel the healing could be faster.   Once you get used to it, it's not that bad, but it could be better.

    Thanks for listening...

THIS IE EXACTLY MY POINT! Games should not be about character customization or the UI! you people are corrupt and all u care about is graphics and how things look. If that makes a game fun to you then fun has lost all meaing in the world of MMORPG

FFXI is straight crap.  I'd take Diablo anyday, even though I hate it.   Its awfully hard to enjoy a game and get into it when the UI and combat system suck from the word GO.  Personally these are major components for a game, if I cant customize the controls to play how I like to play then I wont enjoy it.  Whoever said you can make macro's in 5 minutes: you can only map keys alt/ctrl 0-9, so you have to hit 2 keys to do anything, you cannot map all the actions you want and still have to navigate endless menus all while trying to fight at the same time.  Graphics are gay cartoons, like Im trying to kill teletubbies the whole time.  Everyone looks the same, everyone's equipment looks the same, mobs look the same just instead of a goblin, next its a goblin with a bad attitude, then a goblin with a bad attitude and a stick then a gob... BORRRRRINGGGGG.  I tried and wanted to like FFXI but after 23 levels of "this game is getting crappier not better", I threw the game away with glee.

PS if the game is not about graphics and customization go play D&D on pad and paper or play a text RPG.  Its all about graphics and customization, the only thing that sets it apart.

PPS Im so tired of hearing how FFXI having no lag or bugs make it the best.  Its like you are picking up a piece of dog crap and saying "dude, look how shiny this dog tird is!" And I say "yeah... but dude, its dog crap..."  And then you say with admiration "I know, but its so shiny."

FFXI Is one of the most dull MMORPGs ever.. And I've played all the other FFs multiple times, and there is no comparison. The tetra master minigame kept me entertained longer, and I'm even bored of that now.

FFXI is boring, Every aspect of it is slow, and I'm not simply whining about lvling speed as I couldn't care less what level I am. Travelling to a different area is slow, The speed of resting in between fights is a joke. Running to a mog house is slow, Physically finding mobs is slow, Attacking a mob is slow, The list goes on. The interface is awful, The fact that nearly all of the higher level mobs are simply coloured versions of low level mobs is hardly an incentive to spend weeks/months of grinding.

Of course some people enjoy this game.. And the graphics aren't bad. But it definitely doesn't deseve to be the 3rd highest rated game.

HUGE Disappointment, I'm sorry I wasted my money on it.

Like I said I will not touch the topic that is 'Halo' just the name sparks of anger and loathing on unparalleled levels.

    -Obiyer

Why does Halo spark hatred and loathing? Is it the fanboys? Or is it the fact that it takes the FPS genre into a somewhat new direction? Gone are the days of horrid jumping puzzels and key searching. Just balls-to-the-wall action making you think on your feet, so to speak. Anyway, this is a MMO forum, so I will get back on topic.

I almost got FFXI as my first MMO. However, I did not like the look of it, and have decided to wait for lineage II. That looks like it could become a very great game. I haven't tried any MMO, but I love the concept of organized PvP. Hopefully, L2 will contain it.

In closing, I say that Halo would make a nice MMOFPS. There, I'm done with my ranting.

FFXI has some really innovative things, like the cut scenes, the class system, the combat skill chains and such but it's far from my choice of best MMORPG. Let me list the things I find annoying.

    1) The UI is about 8 years behind the times. Not only do they not have a mouse system that works (can't target while using mouse to move, no locked camera mode while using mouse) but you have to fish through like 3-5 menus for anything. You cannot move windows around or enlarge them (problem when you are a white mage and want to make group menu more visible). I don't care if this game was "written for the ps2" (thats crap btw) they can still allow custom options for other players as well as decent camera mode and mouse controls.

    2) Level spread in groups is just insanely tiny, 2-3? come on thats just stupid. If I miss a day or two of play the people I used to play with are now out of my range.

    3) Travel is way to painful. Even with a bird its slow. Because of this people will only go to specific spots for grouping, which makes grouping even more difficult. If travel was faster or some other means of travel was avaliable things might improve... i.e. see people fighting at areas other that "set" spots!

    4) Gil just is way to hard. Even with my fishing skill I have to spend at LEAST 3 to 4 times the amount of time "farming" than I do adventuring, how screwed up is that? I'm more a fisherman than I am a friggen hero. Thats just stupid in a mmorpg. The mobs do not drop better loot the higher you go (level 30 bat drops same crap a level 1 bat does). Spells at level 32 cost around 10-12k a pop from vendors, there is NO WAY AT ALL you could possibly make 10k in the time it takes to go from 31-32 anywhere unless you solo-farmed "weak" mobs (you know, the ones that give 20xp). Hell, I couldn't make that amount of gil going from 25-32 just adventuring alone.

These guys seemed to take what slowed people down in EQ and magnify it by like 10 or more. I like some aspects of the game and I still play it but the instant something else comes out I am gone.  There is a balance between slow advancement and power, this game just doesn't know what that is yet.

Anyway, thats just my thoughts. For the record this is my one and only Final Fantasy game to play.

They do have some things they should fix but on the other hand it is a solid game that has been a blast for over a month for me now.image

Unfortunatley they dont really listen to people that much. The only new thing i hear that is going to be done is PvP and they made one announcement about it and never spoke of it again.

I have not had as much of a problem with the UI as most people on this forum do. Of course they aren't as good as other mmorpgs, but the UI really hasn't gotten in the way of my gaming experience and you have to take in consideration that it has to work for both pc AND ps2.

Overall a great job done but i just can't help wonder how amazing this game would be if they listened to the players and changed a few things around.

     Score: 8 out of 10.

GUys ok, The new mmorpgs like EQ2 WOW and Ultima x might be better than FF XI in some respect but FF XI is definately the best Mmorpg to date. Its fun right when u start playing and i was really suprised how much it has that FF feel to it. Grouping could be a bit better, and the sound tracks are so awsome i wish it had music in more areas.  The thing i like the most is Items money weapons and armor really have value and the game has a really good player lead economy even though u can buy from npcs the Auction House is a great feature. I like how u can leave your character logged in at night selling stuff from your bazzar only to wake up and be rich!! It is so fun to upgrade to new armor and weapons in this game. Crafting by using crystals is an awsome idea for those of you who like to craft. The graphics are great and the game is almost lag free. I definately suggest this one in your collection if u like online games or are a fan of Final Fantasy. Im going to Level my Red mage/ Warrior now since u can be 2 classes at once which is dope!  Later     Dragonexximage

Obviously you havent been playing long, all weapons and armor look the same.  Everywhere you go theres like 10 other ppl who look just like you.  Other MMORPGS have multi classes and player acution systems too, out of all of them FFXI is by far the worst.

This game has so many mixed fealings about it. I guess it really depends on the game that your looking for. I mean if you think you might be interested buy it, and try for 30 days. If you like keep playing, if you don't return it. But in my opinion it is a really awsome game ^_^

I will point out that the game was designed for ps2. It first came out on ps2 in japan, its UI is based around useing a keyboard and a gamepad, not a keyboard and a mouse. Becaus of this many people i know who play this on pc dont even use the mouse. Mouses are over raited anyway. Im waiting for ps2 release so i can play it the way it was designed to be.

Sigh...image this is the eleventh game in the Final Fantasy game series. Even though the games don't have much in common they are common similarities. This is a game for FF fans! I hear this "ive never played a Final Fantasy game before". Come on. THIS IS FOR FF FANS ONLY. This is not the best mmorpg. I'm sure you could find a better one. This game is really to appeal to final fantasy fans. Seeing as how most games receive either terrible ridicule or people saying its the best game ever, I don't trust individual ratings unless I know the person. And all my friends are playing this. Anyway. If you want an above average mmorpg this isn't it. This is still my fav.image

The UI is fine. The only problem I have with it is its lack of multiple log windows. The macros are easy to figure out/use and can be designed for anything you could think of. The mouse doesn't work well, but once you've tried it with a gamepad every other control setup won't feel right.

The Graphics are excellent. If anything, it's much LESS "cartoony" than your typical MMORPG. The character's proportions are exaggerated, but they maintain a realistic quality to them that you can't find in most other MMORPG's.

The level difference... It actually penalizes the lower level players instead of the highest. The way the formula goes is :

    (Lowst LVL) / (Highest LVL) x 100 = X.
%100 - X = Percentage of experience lost for lowest level player in the party.

It's steep in the teens, but a lot less so the higher you get.

The armor/weapon model diversity also greatly improves the higher you get as there is less chance of players wearing the same gear. LVL 1 - 30, almost all melee characters will wear the same gear. It starts to diversify after that. I don't see why everyone gripes about it anyway. In DAoC every piece of armor looked the same as every other piece in that category until the patch that changed the appearance of epic gear.

Bottom line, FFXI isn't perfect. It has a lot of qualities that make it stand out over other MMORPG's. Some are good, some are bad. Every single one has a flaw and I'd wager that a lot of people are gonna' come around complaining after WoW, EQ2, etc... are released.
