Well, a lot of it has to do with nostalgia.  KQ1 is still one of my favorite games of all times.  I tried playing the new enhanced version and it makes me sick.  I want to go back to the CGA graphics and typing!  Another great feature my PCjr version had was there was no save feature, so you had to win it in one sitting. so if you randomly got picked up by a witch or fell off the stairs to the cloud city you had to start all over again.  Now, PQ1 was truly an amazing adventure game for it's time.  I still remember pulling over the hot chick for speeding, the drug shakedown, the gambling, an A-MAZING game.  Another honorable mention goes to the Black Cauldron, probably because I loved the Lloyd Alexander books growing up.
I played pretty much every adventure game growing up, I think the genre just got stale with boring logic puzzles and linear paths.  I think games like GTA are the new adventure games, but there will always be a place in my gamer heart for Zork, Great Escape, King's Quest, Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, Gold Rush, Hero's Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Space Quest, etc. etc.

Lucasarts made the best adventures ever, Sierra games were well umm crap ^^.

Best adventures ever imo, Zak McKracken, Manianc Mansion, Monkey Island 1-2, Indiana Jones was ok too.

To the OP, yea i hear you I also miss these types of games alot, today companies just making games like CS, Battelfied2, WoW and crap like that. And if u see a new adventure today its totally in 3d and mostly more an action adventure not like the old ones /sigh.

I'd have to go with the original Zork for my favorite Old School adventure game. I also really liked The Bard's Tale and Might and Magic (the early ones).
