What keeps you playing a mmorpg?

Hello,

I am curious as to what keeps people playing mmorpgs.

First a rate these things (if you wish) that keep you playing the game rate these 1 - 6.

-Friends (the games community)
-Game Content (new items, new combat styles, housing, etc)
-World Content (new areas, more areas, bigger areas)
-Game Play (how you do combat, how you move around the world, trade skills, mini games, etc)
-Graphics (eye candy)
-Dynaimc World (cities fall and grow, factions gain and lose ground, the map changes, etc)

By all means after the list if you feel the need to write why you listed them as you did or just want to spout about the whole idea do so.

Here is my list

  1. Game Play
  2. Dynamic World
  3. World Content
  4. Friends
  5. Game Content
  6. Graphics

Maybe as you can tell from my list I find most mmorpg rather boring because the game play is so static and repitative. Most game worlds are not very dynamic as well.

I've found a few that I enjoy; Battle Tech 3025 Online (canceled due to downsizing ::::16:: ) and Asheron's Call 2.

I really enjoyed both these games caues the game play was fast and kept you on your toes. BT 3025 had the best blend of action and strategy I have ever seen on a mmo game.

Anyhow what do you guys like in a mmo game?

Simply put, Friends, nothing else keeps me playing. If I don't have people I know and like to play with then there's no point in playing it, might as well go play a single player rpg. Friends are also a majot determinate in picking the game to start with, have a group of friends who have gone through 4+ games now all together, so we tend to talk about where we're going next, etc.

That's about it for me and no matter what anyone tells you the 3 G's ALWAYS come first for everyone. If not then everyone would still be playing UO or Meridian 59. And just look at the first thing that comes out of people's mouths when they see a new MMORPG: 'Man the graphics look nice!' LMAO.

If a game is graphically sound(graphics), with a learnable UI/programmable macros(game play), loads of customizations/things to do(game content), be able to communicate effectively/make contact with others(friends), in a huge world(world content) and sever side events(dynamic world), then you have the makings of a MMORPG for me!imageimageimageimage

My reasons for playing mmorpg's/computer games.

    1. I have no Life.
    2. I get off with digitally enhanced images.
    3. I can beat the crap out of someone bigger than myself.
    4. I have no Life.
    5. I can carry a concealed weapon and not get arrested for it.
    6. I soo look cool in leather.
    7. I can say things like "Noob" or "Owned" without getting the !@#$ kicked out of me.

    Content- 40 %

    community -20 %

    customer service -10%

    gameplay -10%

    server stability/bugs-15%

    graphics-5%

Now graphics i don't mind  i don't notice it after a few weeks anyhow. However a minimum standard is required in this year 2004.I see AC2 are a good standard for graphics for 2004.

Conten and Community are like about 80% of what gets me in to the game.  Graphics and Gameplay make up the other 20%.

I'm not sure how I'd rate any of these, but what gets me interested initially is an immersive gaming experience. While that kind of encompasses everything mentioned above, mostly I'm attracted to graphics and good content. A dynamic world that seems to be alive helps a lot.

In the end, what keeps me interested is community. Having friends I can share the experience with is ultimately more important than anything else.

I guess for me it would be all about game content.  The catch is, there has to be variety in the game content.  I like to go do something completely different to take my mind off of killing stuff.  image

The first thing I notice is prpbably the graphics, but to actually purchase the game it needs graphics, content, and dynamics...in that order.  What keeps me playing is content and friends.

    My ordering of your list:

    1. Game Play (how you do combat, how you move around the world, trade skills, mini games, etc)

    2. World Content (new areas, more areas, bigger areas)

    3. Game Content (new items, new combat styles, housing, etc)

    4. Dynamic World (cities fall and grow, factions gain and lose ground, the map changes, etc)

    5. Friends (the games community)

    6. Graphics (eye candy)

Actually, there's only one reason I keep playing and playing and playing a game: sheer raving lunacy.

I struggled with the Game Content vs World Content choice, but I had to go with this ordering because the first things I ask in a game are "where can I go?" and "what can I see?" My next questions are "What can I kill?" and "what can I get?"

What keeps me playing is the competition with other players, and also to live a life outside my own.  If i want game play i will go to a nononline game.  The reason i keep playing is for that feeling i get when i know i am better than most other players in the game.  That is where my drive comes from.image

And besides, like it or not, people do try to "win" massively multiplayer RPGs. The rules of engagement are something like this:
    * If there is a status bar, make it grow bigger
    * If there is a number, make it higher
    * If it moves, either get a mission from it or kill it

Fun keeps me In the games --- I work for a living -- I do NOT want to WORK in my Games .. I do not want to spend 10 hours a day in a game to make it meet its ends .... I do not want to spend a whole Day gathering up the supplies to make a weapon ... only to have that weapon be one nobody wants anyway and I am just making it to get better at it ....

THE game has to be fun .... not Tedium and NOT Time consuming ..... Sitting down to rest to recover hit points -- mana (magic)  is Tedium - give me potions .. spells ... something... Anything to let me keep going ... DO NOT give me Time Sinks -- Waiting for hours for something to appear that I need to continue game Play is not my idea of FUN -- So do not put stuff like that into MY perfect Game...

DO not take abilitys or anything AWAY from my characters ... IF you feel I have some gift or attribute that is to good then GIVE all the rest of the players something to compensate - or EVery single MOB something to compensate --- WHEN WILL COMPANIES learn that Takeing AWAY is BAD BAD BAD mojo for thier Paying Customers ??
