Hardcore servers

Do any MMORPGs have Hardcore servers? By hardcore I mean in the same sense are Diablo 2 - character death is permanent.

I appreciate it would only have limited appeal but it might work for some well established games that already have tons of servers. I can see how it might make the low level game fun again for old hands - and PvP would become very very intense.

Would anyone want to play a MMORPG with a character that would become wiped when they die? Or maybe the stats uploaded to a Hall of Fame so everyone can see how far you got before checking out.

    I was thinking of the same idea. Make one server for perma-death and give more exp and loot rewards in order to more quickly build characters up so when they die they could come back fairly fast.

    Only case I know of was the one EQ recently put up but it was only on a trial basis. Basic idea behind it was a full PvP server with a 30 day limit. Players got points for pking other players and at the end of the 30 days, the top 5 or so would be rewarded. There were no rules for the most part and if you died in any way you lost everything and you were reset to lvl 1. I don't know if they plan to bring back that server again or not but it seemed like it went fairly well and the 30 day limit also seems to be a good idea.

    Permanent is generally a bad idea for a MMORPG. However I think it would make a great added sever to just any existing MMORPG. I had a great of fun on EQ's trials run, perma death does add a certain accomplishment and frustration you'll never get out of your normal MMORPG.

    But I wouldn't want to run the risk of losing months of work every day. It's fun at times, but sometimes you want to settle in with a snack, something drink and just goof around. That's a appealing element lost when permanent is introduced.

    Trials of Ascension is offering a Pesdo-perma death system. It's something like 100 deaths and your out. I personally think this offers the worst of both systems, but others believe in it, time will tell.
