And here I thought there was intelligent life playing EQ.....stupid me.

Don't pick up either.  UO has been through so many changes it can't possibly be fun anymore.

I would suggest buying DaoC, best mmorpg on the market right now, stable,  overpowered classes so you can kick some ass in pvp with no skills whatsoever.  It's not a great game but it's basically a huge improvement on the EQ type of mmorpgs.

The "EQ Experience" varies greatly. There as a lot more to EQ, FOR ME, than levels and loot. Mostly, for me,  it was about having pals and doing things. I had a lot of friends and we talked about a lot of different things, we raided together, and sometimes we did stuff just to see if we could. Just because you didn't have that kind of experience in EQ doesn't mean that the whole community is bad.

Every class has a use, and most have multiple uses, and even though there are always people who believe they know the "right way to play" who will try to dictate what each class should do what, there are always other people who will prove that you can do quite a lot with whatever you've got. There is no "right class".

Grah! I can't believe I am defending EQ. It's a little like taking up for the school yard bully.  image

But everything is about monster killing. Do you sit in a city and chat the whole day? Or do you chat while killing monsters for loot or while raiding? Yeah you can meet fun people on EQ but the interactivity between players is down to chatting and trading (which really sucks in EQ). What do you see the most? What I saw was people getting to level 60 then tweaking a new character and then powerlevel it to level 60 and so on. Plus, in High End guilds, most people don't log on the game until there's a raid planned. These that plays day in day out are just trying to get more AAs. Not to forget that the whole camping idea is simply boring. Staying at once place all day long swinging at every mobs spawning at a specific point is totally pointless. I remember spending hours finding a good camp spot where I could get good exp and decent loot. If you only have played EQ then you just can't understand what a community is. The interaction between players, guilds and everything else that makes a good community is nil in EQ. Don't tell Im wrong because there wouldn't be any expansion if I were. More expansions = more levels/abilities for more powerful monsters for more powerful items.

As for the class thingy, what I meant is most group are made of a cleric for healing purposes , a chanter or bard for mesmerizing and buffs and warrior to tank. The other 3 slots are filled with whatever suits you but aren't as much needed as the 3/4 classes above.

Anyways, most EQ players are alienated... I know because I was, but now I see the light. I don't waste 28 hours + a week playing a game that is made of nothing. Im happy for SOE, they found the right way to make a ton of money.

Actually it depends how you view EQ.It is a game of numerous possibilities. Now as for camping I played in end of 1999(was released same year) to early 2002 or so.With 2 breaks in between if i recall.

I suppose i was lucky because i never had to camp anything. My epic the mobs were always there when i got there.

Now for socializing .It is all about chatting anyhow whether you do it while killing mobs or you do it sitting in front of a bank(like in UO).

Ingame social activities requires one to roleplay.IE weddings(used to be very common iwhen i played EQ)  or going to a strip club (in SWG was common too).

However there is NO mmorpg that i played that roleplaying did not die a painful in under a year.

This is the fault of the players not the game or developers. In EQ orges started talking normally ,weddings faded away.In SWG i was there for the last day of the popular player club on SWG when it closed and hardly anyone showed up.

EQ is geared towards levelling but whose fault is that the players. When kunark came out it was declared by the then verrant team that level 60 will be the ultimate and no additional levelling will be made in EQ and all should go and explore and kill uber mobs.

You know what happened players moaned and petitioned for additional levels. Thus was born the famous AA point and later i hear 5 extra levels. Now the content was not all done yet .As of the time i left no one had cleared the ToV or seen it all on any server(i think its done now).So there was content and challenges to be done but people WANTED the level grind!

Look at the new games that levelling are easy - AC2,SWG.Main complaint in under a few months players saiid they were bored.Adding content involves programming, testing and lots of hard work.Even if this work is kept in players can go thru what takes a team of 5 nearly 1 month to program and test in under 1 week.

Everquest involves loads of levelling but its mainly the players that wanted it anyhow.

And yeah many players only log for raid reasons.I was guilty of that.As of that time level 60 was highest no AA points. Now to go for a dungeon crawl with a group was not rewarding for me.The loot was below what i got for raid and i seen those places.Raids were the only way for me to actually see new places, get better loot and have a challenge. So i played alts which i could level up in a different place(a very good point in EQ),try a new class and socialize with non guild players .

EQ is very friendly .Now lets take a guild you have epics which need large numbers to get. Some involve clearing a dungeon or place for hours just to get to that mob.Now some epics like cleric, enchanter or rogue epics are very useful to the guild so you can say the guilds are doing it simply to make the guild stronger .

But some are utter  worthless to any raid situation or the guild and only useful to the user mainly.IE the druid epic.Yet when i played the most epics for any class we had was druids. We took time to do this epics for the person. So you have 20-30 people taking hours of their playtime to help 1 person achieve a goal in the game !Now i am yet to see such friendship in any other mmorpg.

Alrite, I'll make this short and sweet, just so that you can get a real view on both UO and EQ.

    First off UO:

    Lots of customization
    Fun classes
    Cool Mounts
Non-Warrior Bases (ie. you can be a tailor, blacksmith etc.)
    BAD Graphics
    Gets Boring After A While
    Good Community

    EQ:

Im playing it now, just started again
    *Sweet Class Choice*
    Awesome customization (armor - weaps)
Really fun if you just hang in the first couple of stages
    Cool items
    Good Community
Lots of Races (UO has NO races)
    Massive Worlds
Very fun game in my opinion

So i suggest going for EQ. Im from canada, and i just bought the Evolution pack (with like 5 expansions in it) for only 40$ Canadian. So like 25$ american.

Go for EQ if you want a cool- customized game with decent graphics! (plus in 1 or 2 months they are releasing a new patch which makes the graphics better!)

Oh! And one more reason to goto EQ.

Everquest 2 is coming out on June 14th. Regardless of what anyone here says, i think its going to be the best game. If you start playing Everquest now, then you'll get the hang of it and understand a lot about it. Then when EQ2 comes out, you'll fit right in =)

If you dont believe me when i say EQ2 will be the best, just look for yourself at their web site.

    www.everquest2.com

    48 different classes to become
    16 different races
You can own an apartment, house, or guild castle
    The graphics are *INSANE*

I personally just think "what more could you ask for?"

Anyway, thats just my opinion, im not one to say "EVERQUEST IS THE BEST. ALL OTHERS SUCK" because for all i know, you could think Toonland is the best MMORPG ! haha =)

    "Ultima Online or Everquest"

    My answer: neither...lol

And as for Digitydarkman's suggestion of Anarchy Online-played it when it first came out. The best parts I liked about it were the trenchcoats and the swords image . The things I didn't like about it and which made me quit are 1)MAJOR lag. Don't know if they have it fixed since it's been quite a while. 2) The bugs in its playta stages such as falling through buildings when trying to enter them. 3)The horrid boring quests it involved of going into a 'subway' area that didn't even look anything like a subway and killing different monsters in an area that changed but kept the same textured walls and junk. 4)This goes along with #2, but the ability to hit monsters through walls 20 feet away with a sword or any melee weapon...

I'd go for a change if I were you. Try signing up for a beta, esp WoW, Lin2, or maybe try Asheron's Call. AC is heavily based on killing mobs for loot and exp but it's good ol' hack'n'slash fun... Apart from the leveling treadmill and the "bubbles" of blood they call carnage, it's a pretty good game. It's future looks promising too since it's being handed over from Microsoft to Turbine.

I loved Anarchy Online! I think you experienced the worst of it, because there arent any more bugs anymore! And to be honest, i never received one bit of lag while playing! The quests aren't that bad. I find them kinda fun ! But even if you dont like quests theres tons of things to do =)

Anyway, i do agree with trying out for some beta's. They are always fun if ya get in =) Fun and free i might add image Hehe! Well, keep us updated on which one you DO choose!

Hercules... if you only played EQ and SWG it's very obvious that you tend to like those 2 games made by the same company. As for RPGing in EQ, I'd say you're all wrong. I've played EQ since Beta 4 to Luclin (thanks god I had enough willpower to leave after a terrible addiction). I don't know on what server you played but on mine, camps were already assaulted and KSing was needed until Verant claimed it wasn't right. Weddings in EQ were so weaks, nothing like anything I attended to in UO. The EQ's community terribly sucks on every aspects compared to UO's. The interactivity between players and with the world is too limited in EQ and that's why they put more zones with more content with harder monsters and more levels to ding out... simply because no one would sit in Sebilis forever saying the game is fun that way. The most fun I ever had in EQ was in the first 2 months with my SoWed druid, training Sand giants in the oasis, killing everyone until Verant decided it was just too wrong to be done which took 2 days ah ah. No one wants to fear.

Try Everquest.  The development team seems committed to improving the game.  There is a huge player base.  It is a proven success and many of my friends still swear by it.  I quit a couple of years ago but I loved it when I played for about 2 years.  There will be an Engine upgrade soon, and hopefully the player character graphics and gameworld will look better.  If that happens, I may even go back to Norrath . . .
