The first 6 seconds of this video is painful to watch.....
The rest of it is surprisingly bad. I realize it's a low quality compressed video, but still... the large monster fights look pretty choppy, and there's no excuse for that given the kind of video horsepower available today, especially when you're making a promotional video!
Folks have commented here about how SOE doesn't own Vanguard. I would suggest that they don't own them... yet. Large companies are like a viral infection. The constantly assault smaller companies with offers until they find a way in, then they gradually spread. SOE might only control distribution and server hosting now, but 6 months after launch, they'll offer their content designers and GM support. A year after launch, they'll be selecting and rejecting storyline elements and adjusting the combat system for balance. Mark my words here, those who control the purse strings, control how the game evolves.
In any case, I had been trying to convince myself to try this game despite Sony's involvement. I think this video has made it MUCH harder for me to do so.

You're wasting your time here, I've been saying the same thing since I heard about SOE having anything to do with Vanguard but the Vanguard fans just close their eyes and stick their fingers in their ears.
For me graphics dont realy make or break a game. Vanguard looks realy nice to me. Not great but nice. But the gameplay seems abhorent if your a old MuD player like me. I need the ability to do a quest in more then one way. I want more choices then what power to use to destroy the monster. Albiet having alot powers is fun hehe. So far of all the upcoming games only Hero's Journey offers the felxibilty I need. I do like the semi-realism Fallen Earth mite offer if it comes out. Not so sure Fallen Earth will make it, sorta like the Omega game. Age of Conan looks to much like a commerical for vista for me. Pirates of the burning see is worth a look since i love ships hehe. YAR DIE YA SALTIES!! Ok umm
And in reply to the purse strings comment, that is very true. That is why Sigil purchased back all the rights from microsoft and has SOE publish the game. Sigil now is controlling the purse strings.

Combat is a major part of gameplay...and from what I've seen so far, it doesn't look "amazing" by any stretch of the imagination. Time will tell I suppose.

If this were so true then we'd all still be playing text adeventures. The reality is that graphics don't have to be the absolute latest and greatest, but they do need to be pleasing to the eye because no one wants to play butt ugly looking games and the animation in that video was butt ugly.
Edit: Thanks for the gamevideos.com link. It showed me the potential a game in development can have, of course it was LoTRO and not Vangaurd. The high def version of the Vanguard video looked even worse than the low res version, but that LoTRO video looked very cool. I'm not fond of their swing and wait combat system but the animation and the graphics looked good which gives me hope for that game.
Originally posted by Gonodil Well what would be the point then? If they are targeting people that want an EQ style game...but are sick of what SoE did to it....why go back to SoE again?
Thier target experience and their move back to SoE makes me wounder if many people will want to play vanguard at all? (I know I've lost interest ever since the move to SoE)
(And dont say SoE won't effect vanguard at all -- Even based on the rosy icture being painted by Sigil marketing, SoE will (at the least) be hosting the game and handling billing, ie, they will have sigil by the perverbial cojones)
(Also, who's to say that Brad wouldnt just sell the rights to Vanguard to SoE if the game doesnt end up working out the way he hoped?)
The point is, Brad left SoE in the first place to make games himself. He could have retired then and there, but he wanted to get hands on again so he left. He raised the money to buy off Microsoft and make the move to SoE. He can do the same for SoE, especially down the road when he's made a lot of money on the game if SoE is pressuring him to do something he doesn't want to. Beyond that, staying with Microsoft would have been a much worse choice. I don't care how much you dislike SoE, but MS -was- pressuring him to do things he didn't want to do. So he moved.
Smed is his buddy, and I'm sure he's going to take some of Smed's suggestions. Smed ain't the devil like most people think. If he wanted to let SoE take over his game he would have just stayed with them in the first place. He doesn't and I don't think he will let them.
Is it just me or does it look like an updated version of Everquest online adventures for PS2? The characters move the same and everything seems to have the same kind of perportions of that game. I wonder if they are going to port this to PS3? As far as the B-Roll stuff, its the same thing, but a fan or fans doctored it up with music and title graphics.
The good news is, that video doesn't exactly tempt me to cross over to the dark side and give SOE my money. It looks about how I expect it to look... which isn't saying much.

I also picked up on the stiff winged dragon right away and that did kind of irk me. We're in 2006 right? Ok, just checking.
Everyone knew this was a hardcore game from the beginning, they literally shouted about the corpse runs and other time sinks because they are targetting a particular audience who are disallusioned with how easy SOE have made EQ2. I am not exactly a hardcore player (which is why I like EQ2 so much) but I am still looking forward to dabbling in this game to see what it is like. I do agree that for most people this will not be a game they can enjoy..but this was the point, no? The guys behind this game (I hope) have made a decision from the start that this game will not be pandered to whiners, they have basically said (not quoting)..if you are a casual player or someone who does not find time sinks fun, go play something else.
I agree with everyone before me who have said it is unfair to bash on a video of a game in beta. To pick out bits here and there to moan about and claim (from that) that the game will be crap when it comes out is unfair bashing. Yes it could have been a super high polished promotional video but that says to me that SOE isnt fully in charge of what goes on...otherwise I think it would have been just that. This game is not making promises it cant keep, it is telling us "this is where we're at right now, hope you like the potential we have got to play with". Perhaps an attempt to stay grounded?
Thats not me covering my eyes and sticking my fingers in my ears, that is me waiting for the game to come out and then judging it. If it is just as bad at release then fine, bash as hard as you like..I will probably be stood next to you offering you my club
I agree with those posting their disappointment with the graphics. The few avatar faces I could see look limited and bland. Movement looked choppy, combat they did indeed look stiff as others have pointed out. Even on the small screen we have here for the clip, I could see a certain square blockiness to many things in the environment.
I know I'm being harsh on a game that isn't out yet, but from a vid clip the only thing you can really judge about a game is how it looks, you have no way to get a feel about playing it. And based on that, it looks like a step backwards from EQ2, not an improvement.

Frankly, I don't have time or money to waste with so many "3rd gen" MMORPGS on the way. NOW is the time to get me interested, now is the time to make me think about spending my money where I might not have before.
Graphics are a issue when on vanguards site it was talked about how powerful a card you would need an at that time the cards priceing was to high.Course this is going back to last year tho but still. They was gona use the unreal engine i thought /shrug.
Was some bumps along the road that made me less intrested in it as time went on .The whole SOE will do the servers an subscription thing came at just the time i was dealing 2 month old subscription problem /bug SOE had with EQ.That was the final straw for me.More like a 10 ton safe than a straw .
An no the vid sure does nothing to make me want to change my mind an try vanguard. Was good to see some of Keith Parkinson's art work sorta animated tho.

I for one thought that this game was very stupid but out of bordom one day I read the FAQ on silkyVEnom (fansite compalation of released info)
Here is a link, please Give it a read and you might just find yourself like i did saying, "hey this game look really cool!"
http://www.silkyvenom.com/pages/faq.php (p.s. I know its long but read as much as possible)
Anyway, there is a higher def video available at www.gamevideos.com

Oh wait... I retract my earlier statment. It was Hero's Journey that I was thinking about (with the attention to gameplay detail, etc.
I know nothing about this company.
And I'm still not interested. Waiting for Aion and will keep playing Lineage 2.
The thing is, I'm not tired of the fantasy genre because I really don't think it's been done "right" yet.

Well for what it is worth I like the "b-roll remix" better(the resolution sucks on this though). And the animations are being worked on or going to be re-done. Brad agreed that they needed some help.
