Here is something to think about. Only on sites that are specifically trying to promote Eve-online do they even discuss it. Oh there may be a few posts about How there was a cool feature in it or I once played many games like Eve ...
However every game has many posts in it comparing itself to WoW.
Why because WoW is a fun game. Many people recognize that. I played eveonline for quite a while because it was interesting, I kept catching glimpses of fun, but never realy found it.
I hear many people that play Eve always come back to the same argument, it is for the smart people. Well if that makes the very small amount who continue to play it feel better, then maybe we should just let them have it.  Although if it is true, then Eve-online will lose a lot of players to Sim-Accountant online, when it comes out.

EvE for smart people? Kinda but not really. There is no way the game forces you to play. The game doesnt tell you what way you have to have fun.  You cant get to a point where the game tells you that you are good at the game. The game is what you make it and if you are on a quest to power level/grind to increase your epeen and show that you are better than others, you probably arent going to like EvE. Its a casual game. I could do nothing but log on to switch my skills for 2 years, and still be able to do anything someone who had been playing for 2 years could do, assuming I had the money of course. Is there anything wrong with that?

There is a place for the accountants in eve. Those are the people who just build stuff and play the market (the most amazing player driven market in existence imo), and so forth and so on.

Then there are people who play eve because it has the most flexible, tactically deep combat system in any MMO in existence. And they like to watch pretty explosions. And man, the explosions are pretty.

Some people like the fact that the amount of risk you are willing to take is completely adjustable based on what ship you choose to fly and how you choose to outfit it.

Some people like it because even in a dinky little bottom level frigate with basic equipment, you can still play a critical role in a fight with people who have literally 50x your skill points and have been in the game 3 years longer than you.

The biggest problem eve has compared to other MMOs out there that I have seen is that it's a game for self starters, and people are generally lazy. You have to go out and find something to do on your own in eve, or at least you have to find a corp where you will get told what to do. The game won't hold your hand.

Anyone who wants to try eve but is daunted by finding something fun to do, send a mail in-game to Kashre and I'll hook you up :P

    Kash

P.S. The rediculosity of 99% of this thread staggers the mind.

Ok i thought i would give you my oppinion on eve-online and get rid of some myths.

Im 25 male and work fulltime plus do volantary work. i have played a few mmorpgs (Neocron, SWG, mankind, guildwars, City of heros).

I started eve when it first came out and have the orginal cd somewhere. In those days it was confusing and i found it boring because i didnt understand how to play and nor did anyone else. I quit after a week or so.

I came back about 4 months ago to give it another try. And it had improved a lot and there were people who new how to play it which was a help. I was a bit sceptical as i was disapointed with SWGs combat system of click and wait to kill. which i thought was simular to eve. But on playing eve theres a lot more skill involved in combat.

You have to manage your capacitor you cant have all wepons and repair systems going at the same time for 2 long as ya cap will run out and you will get creamed. So it comes down to managing you assests. When i first started i as most people do wanted to get straight in and fight or start  mining. This was pretty boring but brought me some money to get a better ship. SKills didnt take long to learn at this stage couple of minutes up to about a day. I then with in 3 or 4 days found a pirate corp and thought hey piracy sounds fun and gave it a go needless to say i sucked and most of my corp mates were also newbies and we got creamed not because of ships etup but because of inexperience. we had 4 frigates and were killed by one ship. This taught me anyone can kill anybody. And this is a huge loss to me this ship cost me 2 or 3 hours worth of mining. But i was determined to become better i decided i would train for combat skils so since then i have been and now after 4 months i am pretty good with a cruiser and am now flying a battleship though need a few more skils to be really effective. I have an alt who is specilaised in minnig and thats about 2 weeks younger than my main. She can use a mining barge now a coveter which is the highest basic barge you can get and will bring in a lot of isk.

My oppionion on eve is its not for everyone. Hence why it probably has a mature player base.

Most peeps who play eve probably hold down full time jobs, have familys or dont want to spend hours and hours grinding to make there chars better.

It may not be fps or you may not be gaining anything skill wise by killing npc rats but what you do get is a great social community of what was about 25k of people online at same time about a week ago now its up to 28k. Because there on the same server there is a huge varity of perosnailtys.

My corpartion im in at the moment is in 0.0 and has a pos and stuff and we keep getting attacked by pirates which is a pain specially when you lose big ships. I have just baught a 100million isk ship and had to get it in to 0.0 but the route we take is nearly always camped so i had to use stratagy and  wit. Send a scout through to check the gate and follow through this works pretty well and is one fo the options to get safe passage through but even this goes wrong sometimes. that ship would be insured  so i would gett he cost fo the ship back but it also had about 50million worth of mods on it so a ship that cost me 100million isk is now worth 150million isk but i woudl only get back 105million isk if it got blown up. Now you see what makes eve so exciting Its the fact that you can lose a load of money in one fight if your not careful. Hence the thrase only fly what you can afford to lose.

People who say you cant go to 0.0 or engage in pvp until a few months in are wrong, Most pirates will use frigates or cruisers to attack which are reletivly cheap ships to replace and you can fly after only a week or two so you got a good chance of destorying  them and defending yourself. You will die a lot in pvp until you get the hang of it but you only get the hang of it by dying and learning.

In eve you can do what you want trade, kill, hunt, pvp, steal. skilsl playa role but its how you use your assests which counts.

Now you can say eve-online is boring and maybe it is if like me when i first started you dont understand how the game works. but these days you now got knowladgable players who will help you get started and this makes a huge difference. There is no feeling like going through a gate with your new ship or hauler filled with ore and not knowing weather you will make it alive.

IN pvp you learn not to panic. panic is what kills most people and i have done it and lost some expensive ships. but through experiencing this i have become a better player and think about what i do  before i do it.

So to you people who say its boring maybe if you understood how the game functions you would enjoy it more

One guy said we only praise it cause with the buddy program if someoen signs up we get ingame items this is untrue. The buddy program is set up for us to introduce our freinds via email into the world of eve. we get nothing except enetered into a draw or soemthing for a out of game prize which to be honest aint worth that much lol.

I say before you comment on the game play it and find out for yourself and dont give up after the first hour if you dont understand something ask someone im pretty sure once you get passed the intial few hours you will start enjoying the game and wont leave :)

I think the rateing of 8.4 is fair though you do get some lag in the bigger fights but this game will run on a low end system with out problems.

This game may not suit people who are into fps games or like to spend hours grinding to get skills up. but if you have a family or work a lot or just in joy a more relaxed game and a great community then eve could be the game for you.

Hope this may of answered some of your questions

It deserved a second review cause it has a changed a lot since i picked it up the first time

Good flying and take care out there.

I personaly like Eve but I also disagree on the high rank since Eve is rather a niche game, its not for everyone, hence the subscribtion numbers (compared to smashing sucesses like WoW or GW). I guess people who like Eve voted for it and people who didnt like it didnt vote. Unless the ranking is purely about the quality of the game and not the amount of players it can satisfy. If thats the case, there is no doubt Eve deserves that score - its bug free, it has a huge number of content, PvP, non linear progression, player-run everything! If only mining wasnt so grindingly boring.... or boringly grinding...

Only in EvE can you have true heros and villains.  Only in EvE can you truely become someone greater than your peers (ingame) .  Pre Tram UO was the only place you use to be able to get that sort of ingame experience, but now we have eve.

On a side not....God damnit i'm tired of these threads. As such I declared them banned.  THe next fruitloop that starts one, I swear to god I'll find out what game they play and me and some GHSC members will grief them out of game.  Why you might ask....because griefing is the business of the Guiding Hand Social Club, and baby business is good.

LOL take it easy bro, the forums here are for intelligent discussions like these, we are all individuals with individual opinions. We communicate our opinions through forums like this one with the whole world. As long as we are civil and are arguments are sound we should be encouraging people to voice their thoughts, opinions, hopes and desires.
Ive got a question to GHSC, are you guys pirates? Do you camp gates for unfortunate travelers/businessmen? Just wanted to know if I should avoid your organization next time I resub to Eve . Cheers

That is the reason I played EVE.  Corporate scandal?  Devious plots?  Double Agents?  Come on people, you can't find anything like that in any other game.

And read the PC Gamer articles that are linked from that link.  Can you say more roleplaying than in any other game I've ever seen?  The article itself is practically in-character.

everybody says eve is crap or eve rocks.

no one every really says why. or why not for that matter. keep your pants on fanboys and trolls. i am about to explain.

my posts so far have been far from credible. and possibly will continue to be so. as far as my grammar goes, it sucks giant whatever.

i played the game for the full length of the trial. i played atleast six hours a day.

during the trial i did mine, i did pvp, i did pve, i did craft a bit, i did train skills that took a couple of days to complete. i did join a corp. i did agent missions. i did deds. i did help some noobs. i also took some noobs to 0.4 sec and ganked the buggers.

the ships for most part look horrible. the environments are massive. but after the first day they all look the same. you never get any variation.

its setting the destination, putting the auto pilot on. or docking at station. the roid belts look the same. you rarely see what you are shooting at, just some cross on the screen.

the game is full of bugs.

and the famous learning curve. its just the bloody same as any other mmo.

the fun parts are short and take extremely long to get to. the combat system is next to nothing. you lock your target, launche your drones if you have them, orbit the target at the optimal range, or keep it at range, and and then you move on to the next target.

    eve is an ok game.

you all have put mmos on a pedastel.

eve does not deserve its high rating.

You complain that no one says why or why not, yet all you give is opinions.  I know many people that think the ship designs are unique and some have been known to be called breathtaking.

What you consider to be short-lived fun, others consider to be tons of fun that lasts a long time.

I would have given EVE the ranking it has, and I think that ranking is out of respect for the gameplay aspects that it offers to the players, not whether or not it's super fun or super cool to a particular person.

The universe they have built and the gaming rules that are in place are stunning for the simple fact that there are no limitations.  That link that the GHSC member posted proves that.

For an MMO to have no limits and be truly open-ended with the players creating the content and the players running the show in the market and economy I'd say it deserves a higher ranking simply out of respect for what CCP has accomplished.

EDIT: Does anyone realize that it only went up a tenth of a point from the last rating?  Yeah I think people are getting paid extra to hype it an extra tenth of a point.

You wil barely scratch the surface of the game in 14 days. If you think combat at the later stages is just Orbit->Fire->Wait you will die, quickly and often. It's not until you have had time to try out a variety of ships and setups that you can even begin to understand what works against what.

As far as the ships go well that's personal preference but I think the designs are good, and each race has a very different style.

To truely enjoy the ship models and the environment you need to play the game with the HUD turned off.

Use CTRL-F9 to turn off the HUD.
Hold down the right mouse button and find an object you'd like to view.  Now hold down the left mouse button while maintaining the right button depressed.  Move your mouse forward and backwards to zoom in and out.

By taking advantage of these camera controls you can get some breathtaking views.  It looks absolutely gorgeous watching 2 fleets go at it if you're lucky enough to be the camera man that no one shoots.

The game reminds me of Homeworld so much it's scary. However, the gameplay is amazing, and I personally rated it pretty high. The fact that all of the economy is run solely by the players is amazing.

    Homeworld was awsome. Thus...

Greatness i think you miss read that bit :)

I sad SWG(Star Wars Galaxy) was point and click (you clicked a mob and then let you character do the fighting while you sat back and watched it.)

I then said i thoughtg when i first played eve when it first came out it was simular (you click the target set of some guns and watch the fight.)

I then said now that i have come back to the game 4 months ago and have found that the combat system was more than point and click and that you do have to control what you use especially in pvp fights. In otherwords i learnt that it wasnt as easy as i thought it was and the whole game was not as simple as i thought it was when i first played it either.
PvP in eve you need to control your guns and stuff more and its a lot more demanding of the user than most people will understand from just 14 days playing.

You idiot. Runescape has 120,000 people oversomething like 120 servers . EVE has 20,000 over ONE server.

I'm currently getting into EVE again, this time taking the smart aproach to it. I've been having more fun as well than last time .

    EVE deserves the 8.4 IMO.
