Apparently current players, EA, and a few posters in this thread so far dont think so. A graphics update is something people have been wanting for UO for ages, this will definetly pull back a few people, espically if they add an offical classic server.
I plan to re-up as soon as this goes live.

A graphics update is something people have been wanting for UO for ages, this will definetly pull back a few people, espically if they add an offical classic server. I dont care what these current morons think. UO is a dead game, they killed it EA killed UO. The greatest game in history, when i could kill some nub when i wanted to, or i can join a group of brave and become bounty hunters. Or a miner, or an adventurer. Pre UO:R was a real game compared to these pansy nub carebear yugioh holdhands friendship bs cupcake mmorpgs of today.
They changed it because otherwise the game would lose subscribers. I clearly remember a statement from a developer that playerkillers (like yourself) make about 3 people QUIT on average. that so called "real game" would have been dead by now if they let the playerkilling continue. yet the game has still over 100k subscribers, so its obviously doing something right.
the game is not dead. far from it. just because you can't "totally ownz teh nubs and take all the stuff" does not mean the game is dead.
You need the bad to make the good. Trammel did ruin Ultima Online. It added subscribers, but it ruined the original goal. Subscription numbers don't mean anything these days. Look at EVE Online, a FFA PvP game and it has over 100k subscribers. Sooner or later you will realize that a FFA PvP world that evolves as the players make choices is the MMO revolution. You are a fool who follows bad games, which is obvious from your signature. Your opinions are so idiotic and biased it isn't even funny. All you do is troll. You will never enjoy a MMORPG, because you'll just quit and go on to the next grind fest.
You're a joke, Gameloading. Make a new account name and gain some intelligence.
Lol, you play RF Online and you're waiting for Archlord? Hahahaha. And you make fun of people who follow Darkfall? Hahahaha.
ERR Correction sir. EVE is NOT an FFA PVP game EXCEPT in Low Sec space. Do you play? You don't EVER have to risk FFA PVP in EVE if you do not wish to do so. Granted I'd jump on a classic UO server in a heartbeat but the UO:R servers aren't all THAT bad either. I played them up till a year ago. With the graphics upgrade I'm VERY excited about the possibility that UO may finally be getting a true breath of fresh air. And, c'mon folks, let's be brutally honest: How many of us left because we just got tired of an old game with outdated graphics, graphics that were 'old' when the game came out.
I'm not saying the Gameplay wasn't great in Classic UO. I still hop on a 'classic' shard from time to time... but even that doesn't hold my attention very long. Those graphics may not be "cutting edge" but they are very high quality and WILL breathe a breath of fresh air into the game. And I know a LOT of people that will be excited to give the game another spin with those graphics. Just look how many people are excited about it on this thread alone. As word gets out I guarantee this will generate interest. If they do a UO:T2A server as well it'll only draw even more people..... Matter of fact if they roll this engine AND announce a T2A server as well? I suspect a LOT of the 'classic' shards out there will die due to people coming back to UO.

btw, what changes exactly did trammel make to PvP? I know it was a bad one, but what.
EDIT: Ok , my friend explained it to me ><.
hehe well actually it didn't really CHANGE PVP it just gave people who didn't want to PVP a "safe" world to play in. Basically split the PVP'ers off from the PVE'ers. It was a bad way to implement a 'safe area' they should have just done something similar to EVE's system. Unfortunately the game engine, at the time, wasn't robust enough to handle something like that.

Hello no offence to you UO fans i know it was a great game for its time but these graphics suck like really suck, maybe 8 yrs ago theyd be great but its definately not going to bring me back into the game, considering the competition out ther....also is this why EA decided to cancel the recent MMORPG project i think it was called Ultima Odyssey i may be wrong its been awhile but i remember looking forward to that game and i tihnk most would agree it would have done very well considering the hype behind the name itself.
Anyways what a waste of EAs time you people should have made a new Ultima game that might have made a pile of money not try and revamp a dead game with pathetic graphics.
I'm not asking for cutting edge graphics from UO... no matter how they slice it it's a 9 year old game. But these graphics definitely will make playing the game one hell of a lot less painful on the eyes I think, looking at the screens, that they're good enough to return us to the immersion... The old graphics were SOOOO dated that it was hard to get past them to immerse yourself in the game. With this new graphics upgrade it WILL infuse a lot of new life into the game and they specifically said they have a lot more surprises in store.
I'm cautiously optimistic that UO may finally be turning back in the right direction. After all is said and done it's STILL the most well developed and full featured MMORPG on the market.

These graphics along with a classic UO server ill definately resubscribe. Im not sure i would play the current game even with the prettier graphics it would probably just frustrate me.

Yeah, found that out .
I think the idea of a dark world and light world is interesting, to say the least, but it would have been nice to have it more like EVE. However, I realy think they may be releaseing a classic server...
What did they change for crafting in UO from classic? I thought I'd heard that they changed it but I didn't get a chance to play UO upto and past the major changes, so I don't know. If they release a classic server that has the same crafting and PvP/PK ruleset as the original I'll definetly join. I didn't PvP/PK at all in UO (I was a crafter/gatherer) but it added so much excitement for me that I wouldn't even consider playing without it. It made the otherwise mundane task of gathering and travel fun and exciting. I also loved having a runestone in my backpack marked 'Inside Home' that was actually in the middle of the ocean (for those pesky thieves).
I'm kind of shocked at all the people happy with this new engine. UO2 cancelled, UXO cancelled. Yet EA throws you a bone, and you are willing to go running back. With your tail between your legs. Sorry I have a bit more pride then that. You can be happy with the scraps that EA throws you, i'll pass though.

I was happy they canceled both of those games. Sequels in the MMO universe are a mistake, IMO. Stay with the product and make it better.

Well, go ahead.
I personaly never got the chance to play UO retail (except at a friends house) so i'm very interested.
On the original post of those images on the Stratics forums, they do mention that they will be 'tweaking' the gameplay to match the new graphics. Now.. I hope to dear god this doesn't mean they will be changing the melee or magery system, because both were flawless. As long as they don't change too much else about the game, i'll be happy.

all the note from darkscribe says is that there will be a new interface.. nothing about gameplay tweaking
Still....regardless of whether or not the game is alive and well, or a dead game, I still think the graphics look good while keeping it in the traditional Ultima universe. I still very VERY fond memories of Ultima VI and Ultima VII (and addon pack)
I'm going to watch t hese developments with cautious optimism.
It IS EA we're talking about after all. I don't have much faith in them. But, if things are as good as they are looking to be I will be happy with the direction UO is headed.
As to UO2 and UXO 1) UXO wasn't a sequel to UO, it was a Sequel to Ultima 9 2) UO2 was NOT going to be anything like UO. It was going to be a totally new game in the EQ clone format.
So you can gripe and carp and moan all you want about those two games but UXO being cancelled really didn't mean anything to UO, it wasn't a sequel to UO. And UO2 I had no interest in because it would have been "Just another EQ Clone"... With levels even... BLECH
An upgraded interface for UO, especially the quality of those screenshots, is exciting to those of us who love UO to this day.
