I'll be picking up FFXI tomorrow. I am thinking of making a Thief. I know very little about the jobs except from what I read on the official site and these posts. Is a thief a fighting class? Will I be able to use a sword or dagger? Can I actually steal something? I can't wait to play tomorrow night, I've been hearing so many good things about the game.
Yes thieves are considered melee fighters but they don't steal from other players, if thats what you meant. I always enjoy having a thief in my group because you get more treasure that way and that is always nice and they do pretty good melee damage so finding a party shouldn't be hard. Also yes you can use daggers and a lot of the swords too.
Played the game a month, not a fan myself. If you choose whm you will be able to get into parties well above your level making easy to gain exp. Almost any other class it isn't as easy. Thf/Nin is about the only Thf I would accept into party as they do wicked dmg dual wielding daggers. Healer is good class to start with to make friend and linkshell buddies. Once you have friends from your healer then you will have people willing to let you party with a lesser popular class. Hope you all have more fun with FFXI than I did.

No wonder you'er not a fan if you are in a group and they are all higher level then you, you are the one in the group that gets the least amount of xp so in a sense the best kind of party (outside of what jobs to use which is another debate) a party with all the same level would be ideal.

I am not too picky about what class I play, I have tried them all in various games and I like them all excpet maybe Monks. I can't see how hands and feet can go against a skilled swordsman, but that's just my opinion. Anyway, I'll be playing tonight, unless many of you convince me otherwise. I was very close to hitting the re-subscribe button in Everquest last night when I decided to give Final Fantasy XI a try. Maybe if I could get $$$ for a world pass, I could join the same server as some of you guys.
OMG, here, just send me your 50 dollars and save yourself the horrible experience they call FFXI. Biggest waste of time/money/hard drive space... ever!

Oh but you do, you can have a friend buy a world pass for you and isn't that the only reason to be able to pick your server. I love this because you don't have huge servers that are packed and you don't have small server with no one to group with or help out if you need it. Also this game isn't retarted it is the best MMO ever made hands down no can argue.

What about the hundreds of thousands that play FFXI ( I heard over 1 million actually, but I don't believe that myself). Can they all be wrong?
Theres over 1 mill characters created, not accounts. Theres over 400,000 active accounts for EQ also. Most of the players are Japanese and all the servers are in Japan. /shrug just read the reviews.

Yes please stop being annoying I don't wast my time going on the EQ and SWG boards telling them how they're game sucks because how does that help them.
Oh you say that it's only 1 million characters but if you played this game you would know that most people like me only have one character, but there are a few that have two but the second is only a mule character. You can change jobs at any time and so with having one character you can be a level 75 in all of the jobs if you had that sort of time. So having an extra character is a waste because of rank points money and other things that won't carry over. And I don't know but I am asuming that if you unlock advanced jobs you can't use them when you create a whole new character.

Not true, most at least want to try another race or char mod. Also alot of people (ie husband and wives etc) play more that one char on an account if they dont have 2 comps.
In answer to the other question I came from EQ (3 years), tried Horizons, FFXI, AC2, AO, and DaoC. Nothing even compares to EQ. Now awaiting EQ2.

Theres over 1 mill characters created, not accounts. Theres over 400,000 active accounts for EQ also. Most of the players are Japanese and all the servers are in Japan. /shrug just read the reviews.
