Depends on what the Police in your area uses. My department uses the Glock models. For the standard duty issue we had a glock 19 and our off duty firearm was a Glock 23. The Glock 19 is a 9mm while the Glock 23 is a .40 calibur. Glock 23s are much smaller...the same exact size as my Beretta. For Glocks, you're looking to spend about 600-800 bucks for a brand new one and 400-500 for a good quality used one.
Berettas look nice, feel nice, and their damn fine guns in terms of accuracy. Berettas 96 model is a great full length pistol and is a .40 calibur. Look around to spend 700 brand new and 450 used. That model can be seen here: http://www.beretta.com/images/immagini_maxi/p_92_96_DS_maxi.jpg

Ak-47's are Trash, M-16s are only slightly better becuase they are able to to hold a decent shot group. but still a 5.62 round has the stopping power of a 22 and they are very reliable. I can't wait until the army up grades its weapons.
Glocks have less kick? maybe i've confused but since glocks wiegh less then other pistols they have alot more kick or at least seemed like that to me.
And about berattes being good guns? i disagree but each his own i prefere a old colt 45.
