I think the problem with your analogy is one of time. We're talking about measuring D&L against all those promises they made about the game years ago, not yesterday or today as in your analogy. And the original point I was making that players' reviews of the game probably take into account a whopping serve of disappointment over what D&L ultimately failed to deliver.

I still agree with you but to a point. My point being that did DnL "drop" any of their promises. Did they come out and say, well we promised an actual functioning political system, but on further review, we've decided to drop the political system. Did they come out and say"We are now offering a flight simulator/grind till you drop game instead of the full functioning player based system that we offered before."
What I'm saying is, all the original promises are still being offered(at a premium price) but almost all of them aren't in game at this point. Will they ever be! They say they will be in the future but almost nothing promised is actually in the game at this point...Mmorpg.com is going to write a review in the near future. Almost nothing that was promised to be in the game is not there at this point, 3 months after full release. That should have a huge impact upon their review I should think.
Played Wow, D and L, AOC, GW, Eve, Rift and many more insignificant games.
MMORPG.com's reviews and game coverage are worthless. The only good thing here is the forums. They have always handled DnL with kid gloves. They love small game companies and PvP games. They are afraid to review this game because they will either be seen as the fraud they are for sugarcoating their review or they will have attack the game they have worked so hard to build up with inflatedpreviews. Eitehr way if they review they lose.
There is also a reason no one has reviewed this game. Because its so bad no one plays it. Why would anyone waste an employees time reviewing a dead game. Besaides who could actually play it long enough to give it a fair review.

Then we mostly agree
I stopped following the game too closely after SoG was released. Because it was clear then that those original promises would not be kept. Some of the game info the devs were releasing was so radically different to what was originally promised that I knew the D&L I wanted to play would never be released.
Review aside, one has to wonder at what point game developers could be seen to have committed fraud - if they takie money for a product they don't possess and can't deliver.

Zippy on that one, I can guarantee you that you are wrong. The review is almost done and quite fitting - if I may say so. The score will not disappoint you or me
MMORPG.com is more professional than you think. DnL receives the same fair and balanced treatment that every other MMORPG has received. Your conclusions why the review isn't out yet, are false. It merely took a little longer than usual. I would have gladly reviewed DnL myself, but I am biased.
Originally posted by parrotpholk Yeah prolly no reason to review this game as word of mouth has made sure it is dead. Generally I avoid forum opinions but yeah this one seems dead already. A shame tho that all those that paid for this seem to not be able to get refunds. I do often wonder if this game has any fans at all. Would love to hear from one just for another side of the story
Other side of the story? you mean a positive view of the game? Well, there used to be two names I can think of that would have. Weg! and ZtyX, these were the most hardcore supporters of this game through even the worst times.
Hard to believe, but it seems even these two have given up. Last post i saw from Weg! was him basicaly saying goodbye, I'm going to Darkfall, and that even he had given up. I posted it here in these forums, as i couldn't believe he had given up.
ZtyX, i haven't seen him post in awhile, and the last few I read, it was clear he was becoming frustrated. I think the latest fiasco with the GM3 weapons was the final straw. At least it appears that way.
TBH, if these two guys, the most hardcore, unshakable fanboys I have ever seen have given up, it truely is the end. i mean ZtyX even had named his mount "Vuaarr, the greatest developer".

I would listen to CoHsucks. If everyone says the game sucks then it sucks! Yeah, there were a few diehard fans but even they have dried up. At one time you couldn't post a negitive thought on the DnL forums without drawing half a dozen diehards.(The only diehards...) The funny thing was, they were always right there! Not playing the game...Hmmmmm.... draw your own conclusion here. Now those former fanbois seem to have slipped through the cracks and disappeared.
Played Wow, D and L, AOC, GW, Eve, Rift and many more insignificant games.
DNL has a lot of potential. Or so some of the fanboi's and Devs posing as Fanbois will suggest. Other than those 20 or so people, though, that's about the extent of the positive comments. Maybe if this game were completely trashed, and rebuilt from the ground up by a different company, in a few years it would be playable. But, as is, it's crap.
The game is unenjoyable and full of bugs. That is, when you're unfortunate enough to be able to log in. Most of the time, your character is either perma bugged, or your computer simply wails in agony and finally thrusts itself onto the nearest sharp object. No joke, I had to reformat my compter twice just to get the game to run. And then reformat it two more times just to make sure I got it all off when I was done my review.
Not to mention that the game is so horribly unbalanced that you can get to level 80 in about a day and a half, and one-hit mobs 20 levels above you. But fear not, because that is completely offset by the PVP where a player 1 level above you can one-hit kill you. That is, unless you have one of the super-uber-bugged weapons floating around. I realize that balancing is always an issue, but to take the approach that positive a billion plus negetive a billion is 0 isn't quite what you should have in mind for 'balance'.
But, I digress. On to the negative aspects of the game.
GRAPHICS
Compared to other games the graphics in this game are very good. That is, if that other game is the original Doom or Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle. While the environment is nice, it's like drowning in sweet, sweet beer. You're glad it's not urine, but at the same time, you're still drowning. "In games such as WoW, we have vivid environments with dynamic lighting, and many different landscapes to look at." In DNL, there's a tree here, a mob there (if you're lucky) and miles and miles of mostly empty landscape.
Granted, they did create what they initially set out to create, one of the 'biggest MMOs you've ever seen'. And there are no load times. But when you have a huge, empty world, you can basically run it on a 486SX-2 and not have load times. And even then, the game still lags badly. It reminds me of Tron, big open and empty, and look at the piece of crap that was running that world.
Given that this game has been in the works since 2001, and that most of their ripped off technology had to be removed, it's no wonder this game looks like one of your old favorites from 1999. Like Daggerfall. It's a shame they didn't just put the thing into RPG Maker in 2003, and spent 3 more years refning it. It would have been a heck of a lot better game.
SOUND
The Music isn't bad. It's not annoying, but it's not not repetitive either. As for the sound effects, the only sounds I ever heard were the attack sound, which is a staticky crackle. The spell sound, which is like crackly static, and the beep from my computer when it reboots for no reason. Oh, and also the more-so enjoyable sound of silence (not the song, but actual silence).
My advice would be to rip some of the songs out of a good RPG, load them into some sort of media player, and play them in the back ground. I would suggest Final Fantasy VII. Or, better yet, put them in an mp3 format and play them on your Ipod. That way when your computer crashes, you can close your eyes and pretend you're back playing Final Fantasy VII again. You know what I'm talking about. We've all had the Aeris fantasy. Ahem.. So...
ROLEPLAYING - STORY
The story is this: There once was a land called Ganareth. Something happened and the moon blew up a little. Now, there is a Dark Faction and a Light Faction. They fight all the time when they can find each other, but otherwise, mostly you just walk around doing nothing, maybe crafting and maybe killing some mobs. Sometimes there're events, which just like in real life, are broken and bugged.
I think there may be some sort of plague killing off all the players too, either in game or in real life, which is why there's hardly anyone left. Actually, this game could be the "Survivor" MMO, I'm not quite sure yet.
That's about the gist of the story.
The player base is actually very good in terms of role playing. I'm guessing that the game is focused on how life sucks, how there're a ton of bugs (especially up here in Maine), and you get griefed all the time and nobody helps you out. And, in that regard, the player base adamantly sticks to that roleplaying genre.
GAMEPLAY
Travel
This game is definitely focused on travel. There are balloons, shields you can slide on, dragons and even hang gliders (or was that a dragon?). DNL does a good job of offering many different types of travel. And once you get the hang of the controls, it becomes easy to fly around on a dragon, which is probably the most enjoyable aspect of the game. But still not as good as Pilot Wings. That game was awesome.
Crafting
As with most MMOs, some of the best weapons are crafted. In fact, if you get a master weapon crafted, you can just about one-hit kill anything you want. The other dozen or so players, all the elite MOBs, and probably even castles and even Tony Danza (I haven't seen castles or Tony Danza in game yet, but the devs assure me at least one of them is in there. I'm guessing Tony Danza, castles for this group seems lofty).
You can also level up your crafting, as long as the GMs don't hose your character. Once you reach Master level, you can really start raking in the goth. And with lots of goth you can.. well... brag about all your goth to.. um.. that guy over there! Just kidding, there's nobody over there...
Movement
There's a first and a third person view (I think). But otherwise, movement is simple, yet very difficult. In some cases, the same movement key in one aspect is different for another. And you may be able to rebind the keys, but I haven't been able to locate that function. And the manual doesn't mention that either. Actually, I don't think I've ever seen a manual. The character animations are also pretty bad. All the time they spent making the world large, they should have spent (at least an hour or so) on making the in game objects not so outdated.
Clothes look like they hover around you, and hair looks more like plastic than hair.
Skills
Skills are fairly useless. Most of the time, you'll be using one skill only, and even then, I'm not sure what the point of the skills are anyway. Your best bet is to not worry about skills and just power level yourself to the highest level you can get to, get a master weapon, and go attack some random people. Maybe try to ruin an in game even or something while they still exist. Skills were supposed to allow players to create a base skill set, and then choose to progress up a particular skill tree given their base profession. Unfortunately, that's WAY too complicated to program for these "developers". So, they instead just created a bunch of unimaginative icons, and some lackluster skills, and added them in as some sort of incentive to play.
I've been told that more skills will be added in the next patch, and then probably rolled back, and then added back in again, but this time they'll be bugged.
Dying
I don't think I ever died. By the time I was level 2, I felt invincible. Aside from PVP combat, which I was never able to do, since I never was able to find a second P. So, most of the time, I was just PV-ing. I hear you can PVE, too, but again, I didn't find any E. And trust me, about the only thing that could make this game good is a ton of E.
PERFORMANCE
This game would be a great benchmarking utility. If you can get an FPS over 10, you'd probably get a 3DMark06 score of roughly a billion. There's constant lag even in open areas, and for as terrible as the game runs, when I first saw the graphics, I half expected the Recommended Computer Specs to mention 'Pentium 2' or 'Updated 3dfx VooDoo 3 Drivers'.
Not that graphics are a huge deal. If you can create a fun and involved game that immerses you and gives you a sense of accomplishment, graphics are a secondary concern. But performance is always going to be an issue when it's bad. If your engine can't handle what you're trying to do, you simply don't do it. Farlan more than likely has a terrible group of devs with highly flawed coding methods.
COMMUNITY
As I said before, the community definitely embraces role playing. They stick with their complaining and constant arguing even on the forums. And when they aren't begging for a patch, they are whining about rollbacks. Again, I can only guess this game is about how crappy life is, and a major component is about playing a really terrible game.
In that regard, DNL shines. It totally represents exactly what playing a crappy game with no support would be like. Where every second of gameplay is equivalent to putting a red hot pin directly into your eyeball.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
The only customer service I ever had to deal with was when I called Click and Buy for a refund. Oddly enough, I got an automated service and the options were 'For DnL Refunds, please press one. For all other inquiries, please stay on the line.' When I pressed one, all I got was Circus music. I held on for about 3 days, and finally gave up. I'll never see that $59.99 again. I might as well have put it into a bottle and threw it into the ocean.
VALUE
Even if this game were free, you'd feel ripped off. Even if you value your time at less than a penny an hour, you'd feel like it was a waste of a few good pennies. I'm guessing that the reason they never put out a retail product is that stores like Walmart were like 'Hell no we're not putting that on our shelves, we have a reputation to uphold!'.
Even getting paid to play the game doesn't seem to be good enough, judging by the fact that it doesn't appear that the developers have ever really played the game. I'm guessing if the CEO nets a million dollars at the end of this project, he may pick up a copy (more likely a free trial). But actually netting a profit will be a significant stretch. I'm guessing a class action lawsuit is more likely.
CONCLUSIONS
If you like eating rotten eggs, cutting yourself, or watching 'Judging Amy' this game is for you. Otherwise, there are lots of games out there that are more fun and actually finished. Basically, every game on the market minus one is a better option than DNL.

What can i say this is the worst game i have ever seen in my life hmm apart from that crapy game on the sega megadrive rise of the robots and spice girls on the ps1 what a waste of time truely patheticness in full effect.

I hope so, considering we've already passed the deadline when MMORPG.COM was supposed to have the review. Seriously, something is up. Farlan and co. have cheated and lied to this community as much as Mourning did, but they are still here. The owners/editors here have seen this fiasco happen from day one but have said nothing against DnL. And they apparently don't want to give an honest review that has been asked for over many months time. DnL should have been removed by now, the same way Mourning was. Perhaps Farlan is playing the old Mourning "We will sue you!" bit? I doubt it, since anyone would tell them they don't have so much as a wooden leg to stand on, but you never know. Hopefully, we'll get some answers soon.

you value your time at less than a penny an hour, you'd feel like it was a
waste of a few good pennies. I'm guessing that the reason they never put out a
retail product is that stores like Walmart were like 'Hell no we're not putting
that on our shelves, we have a reputation to uphold!'.
Even getting paid to play the game doesn't seem to be good
enough, judging by the fact that it doesn't appear that the developers have
ever really played the game. I'm guessing if the CEO nets a million dollars at
the end of this project, he may pick up a copy (more likely a free trial). But
actually netting a profit will be a significant stretch. I'm guessing a class action lawsuit is more likely.
CONCLUSIONS
If you like eating rotten eggs, cutting yourself, or
watching 'Judging Amy' this game is for you. Otherwise, there are lots of games
out there that are more fun and actually finished. Basically, every game on the
market minus one is a better option than DNL.

Can we review this review? I give it 5 stars
I can't wait. Remember, so far in the reviews section, the lowest rated game is RYL at 4.3

You have the grammatical aptitude of pizzadude.
Sad to say, but I guess they just don't have what it takes to do a real review of this game. I really did expect more from MMORPG.COM, but...... whatever.
