Originally posted by flipperdan one other thing that made UO perfect- isometric 3rd person. probly the best POV you can have for an RPG, and i dont think theres really any other MMO out there that does this. theres ones that zoom out a bit, but not isometricly. that POV also enables probly the BEST chat system in any game. you can actually see whos talking, and who the person is talking to. a big problem in other MMO's, is i dont get too involved socially because i tend to ignore chat systems unless im looking for help. i just dont see why devs dont take into consideration that classic UO is probably the most loved MMO out there for reasons that many MMO sites talk about- perfect unregulated PVP, perfect looting, ability to steal, housing with a PURPOSE, a simple/noncomplex skill system that is 100% skill based with each improvement in skill making a diff, and a perfect POV for chatting hell, even UO of today probly puts most MMO's to shame, but it seems very disorganized and more about hack n slash after reading up on it nowadays. gotta hurry up n finish my comp sci degree and go to Full Sail and get a job as a game dev somewhere and put together an MMO that the PEOPLE want. not the classic EQ recipe for an MMO
I thought EQ1 > UO. Yes, I have played both. EQ1 was a more 'real' feel though, so thats why I probably liked it more.
There is no game like UO used to be.....period! An open PVP world can't compete because it won't generate enough revenue. Forget it, unless a millionaire justs want to make a game and could careless how much money he make. Untill then.........no idea, i havent played any MMORPG's (except player run UO server) since Dec 2005. And i've been playing one MMORPG or another since 1998 UO. Wow, almost a year without another MMORPG.
Oh and about the 2D graphics, I have no problems with them, maybe a game could have an updated engine like in Diablo2. I don't need 3D. I prefer 2D sometimes plus it doesnt drain the power of you computer as much, more people can play it. Hmmmmmm...........
I played UO for almost 5 years too. and Everytime I tried to change I ended back to UO. I have never found a game similar to UO by far.
The last try i did i tried several games (wow, eve, gw, etc,lineage2, shadowbane, etc) I didnt like most of them but I have to say EVE has the flavour of the UO flexibility. The pitty is that I dont like sci-fi, then I tried EQ2 too, and from all the fantasy games i have tried is probably the best, so I moved to EQ2. Its not as flexible as UO at all, and not as fun as UO is. But UO is still the best game ever to me.
P.D. EQ2 has a free trial, and i think EVE has it too. So you can probably try both and make your own idea.
Originally posted by flipperdan its ashamed that EVERY game out there has to follow the easy cookbook recipe of an RPG- fantasy, levels, and fighting. the first, and still considered the most unique/best by many- UO. EQ's being out around the same time for some reason took off more than UO. Don't know why more developers dont do skill based and allow for a more "realistic" environment. If theres only 2 actual games out right now that really have a large audience and follow the skill system (UO and EVE), the MMO industry has some serious problems ahead...basically, no game that will ever be as large of a community of UO/EQ/AC simply cuz theres TONS of games out there now that nearly the same which will make the MMO community spread so thin. ill look into EVE. im a little jaded on the whole Fantasy/lotr genre of MMO's. my big concern about trying the very small and "no name" MMO's is whether there will be an actual in game community large enough that itll have the full MMO experience btw, i tried UO bout a year ago, and I just didnt like it as much anymore. it was such a different game from when i played. EA totally destroyed an amazing game
I understand them and why they do it. Imagine you have millions of others peoples dollars to use to produce a successful money making MMORPG. The current safe trend is what they are doing. When it appears that the trend is failing newer things will have to be tried. Do you have any idea how much pressure there can be when you are responsible for that type of project?
