From what I've read player crafting drives the economy - as it did in Camelot. It's not the main focus and isn't necessary to advance... but once you reach max level you should be able to afford your end gear even if you are a casual player with some work.
I was a grandmaster fletcher in daoc - I would take orders for staves, bows, arrows, quarterstaffs, and the wooden pieces of siege weaponry. Quality was random - I wasn't assured of making a usable item every time. Most players wanted 99% or 100%(Masterpiece) because the higher the quality the more stats you could put on it. Masterpiece was rare but attainable by even casual gamers.
I could also use this skill to repair keep doors, walls, and assemble siege weaponry on the front lines.
Like someone mentioned earlier - they were an enchanter of sorts. The weapons I made would go to him to enchant with stats, then to an alchemist for procs - keeping the money in the economy. I can only think they would improve upon it... and you'll barely be inconvenience by having to hire a crafter to keep your tosh covered with knickers after you've torn your last pair.
The best part? No auction house - they had consignment merchants where you put stuff up to sell from your home. Didn't really have a big problem with Chinese farmers because they couldn't speak enough English to take orders for armor and weapons.
Currently playing: Eve, DAOC, Warhammer Games I've beaten: AC, AO, CoH, DAOC, D&D, EQ, EQ2, FFXI, FlyFF, GW, Horizons, L2, Ryzom, Shadowbane, SpaceCowboy, SWG, UO, WoW Stay away from: Eudemons Online, DNL, and Roma Victor
