hmm...tough for me to say at this stage of the 2 games development. I have not yet heard enough about how the PvP will work in EQ2. PvP in an mmorpg is Extremely important to me. The way that it is done can make (in the case of the early days of UO) or break (in the case of Daoc) a game for me.
Certainly the bumpmapped graphics on EQ2 are impressive, but as I say..graphics are the absolute final thing I look at in a game. Everquest 1 was quite a fun game, decent expansions, good variety in terrain and classes. Quite enjoyable looting and raiding system. However EQ1 suffered from a variety of things which in the end made the game very annoying to play, plus the pvp sucked badly. Hopefully they will have learned from the mistakes of EQ1 and that could make EQ2 very nice (depending on how the pvp is done)
WoW looks very good, I like the style, vibrancy and quality of the graphics (though again, not important), the music is superb, the variety of the terrain and quests is excellent. The pvp system seems very similar to the realm system of Daoc. The background story and history of the world is impressive and detailed. Plenty of roleplaying possibilities there. I like the chance to play as an undead (for RP purposes), and I have never yet been disappointed by a Blizzard game.
Hmm..at this time, I couldnt decide between the two. How the pvp compares will probably be the final decider on which game I prefer. Either way I will most definately try both.
Well, if you haven't heard, SOE does not focus on PvP. Instead, they focus on PvE, which I feel makes the gameplay more enjoyable. The devs have said that PvP is not their main goal in the game so I can expect the same system as in EQ1. For you this might not be good since you are a fan of PvP. Just thought you might want to know this.
Its not really a question for me of whether they focus on PvE or PvP, they are not mutually exclusive. I enjoy both PvE and PvP, its a question of a game developer getting the balance right between the two and doing both in a game. For instance, SOE included PvP options in SWG. The trouble with EQ1's PvP was that it was too limited. If they rectify that in EQ2 (which they may well do given the retail success of PvE/PvP games like Daoc) then EQ2 could turn out to be very good.
Very few mmorpgs have ever made PvP their main goal ( and the few that have tried to have it as their main goal in the game have usually failed), EQ1 received far FAR too much negative press about the system for PvP that they used in EQ1, that alone will ensure that they redo the system somehow for EQ2, its merely a question of how well redone it is.
For me, PvP is an essential part of an mmorpg, without it there are very little consequences to a players actions, and roleplay is severely hindered. However, I do not focus on PvP, its all about a balance between PvE and PvP for me...if a game does both well, that in my book is a smash hit
I think WoW graphics are undersold. They are certainly going for more of an abstract fantasy look, as opposed to the gothic realism of EQ2, but the detail is still pretty amazing. And I'm sure WoW will run a lot smoother on a midrange system when they are both released. If you have to crank down the EQ graphics in a group or in town, then who cares how good they are ? (I'll be playing both btw).
