I appreciate your enthusiasm. However, I want to play as an Orc and slaughter Hobbits as a career. I also would have liked to be able to make war against dwarves as an elf for example. I have read the arguments against this playstyle, and they make me want to vomit. These things did happen in Middle Earth. Why can't I do them as well? Its unfortunate that such a grand avenue is blocked off. But I am only one person, or am I?
Because this game simply is not made for the PVP audience.

You do know that PvP is an important aspect, for the immersion to be top notch, right? As a roleplayer, i would never play a game that didn't have PvP. It's all about how you implent it. WoW PvP ain't exactly grand. Badly implented, just another grind. Now, try some of the hardcore RP PvP PW's in NWN, and you'll get to experience PvP in its full meaning The merchant guild that stands up to take down another merchant guild, the brawl in the inn, the evil warlords army marching toward the great city of peltarch, the thief that steals your coins...
Basicly, doing an PvE only LotR game is only suitable for singleplayer. PvE only MMORPG with the LotR franchise is so wrong, it's like spitting in Tolkiens face.

Basicly, doing an PvE only LotR game is only suitable for singleplayer. PvE only MMORPG with the LotR franchise is so wrong, it's like spitting in Tolkiens face.
I've been roleplaying for many a year and never have I felt the need that you have to be able to play the bad guys to get a true roleplaying experience. How exactly is it spitting in tolkien's face. I never read in any of his books about Sauron's daily forays, or how gollum did this and that through his point of view. The focus in the rings has always been towards the sides of light, show the lights battle against an evil and oppressive dark.
I've never sat at a d&d game and thought, you know all this just isn't fun unless I can kill of my fellow players and ignore the adventure. PVE is about questing with your friends, Teaming together to take out a giant dragon, conquer an impossible dungeon. I don't need pvp in my games to validate them. Sometimes it's fun. No one seems to get the fact that a large amount of people like pve as well, and it's far from dead in games. It's not the carebear way to go, it's just another way. Most PvE'ers see the good sides of pvp and know it's nice to have a dash of it here and there. Why can't pvp'ers see that sometimes it's just not for them. There are other games out there, and there's going to be other games out there.
Actually.... i'm pretty sure Warhammer Online will take a good chunk of WoW's community (mostly the people that are bored of pve and the pvpers). Then in a few years bioware's mmo will most likely have good numbers as well.. other than these two I don't really think any new mmo's will even come close to WoW's numbers.
IMO, this game will fail. The whole turbine concept is terrible. Middle earth online was good. Way back when it was middle earth online, it was the only mmorpg that i wanted to play. Great, you do some quests with a few of your mates then log off. You can do that with the lotro on the xbox. The only difference with the console film games than this is the online game will be more of a sanbox. Thats not enough to keep subscriptions going. No factions and just pve - whats the point? What do you do after you've done all the quests? Cancel your subscription, thats what. It'll go the way of DDO. It'll have large initial subs, then die fast. Sure, there will be lots of people, after doing all the quests, will enjoy standing about rp'ing etc living in a glorified chatroom. But, I dont think there will be enough of these type of gamers to sustain the game. The game comes across to me as a 'disposable' online game. It'll keep you entertained for a few months, then you'll leave because you've either experienced all it has to give or you'll realise there no long term character development or goal.

What is the point of PvEing for new weapons and armor when you can only use those new weapons and armor to kill more monsters so you can get................more weapons and armor. It makes no sense. It's like playing basketball and not keeping score. Only retards enjoy stuff like that. Anyway, LOTR is gonna blow. It's obvious they are designing a very traditional/carebear game so as not to alienate any new mmorpg players who just buy the game because it's LOTR. This is a game for people who like LOTR and wouldn't mind trying a mmorpg. It's not a game for people who like to play mmorpgs in general. We've seen all this crap before, there's nothing new or groundbreaking at all here.

That isn't really a very good example. While I agree that hunting mobs to get better weapons to hunt more mobs to get better weapons to hunt more mobs.... is actually lame and doesn't hold me at all, your basketball analagy is off. People play basketball for fun and for some competition. Not all people play MMO's for competition. Many including myself play it for adventure, which sometimes has competition, sometimes has exploring, and has lots of quests.
But in both, there has to be a point to the game, and just getting weapons is not much of a point IMO.

If this is about the Lore and Immersion into Middle Earth, I suggest you read the Hobbit. Its a lot easier to keep track of than the Silmarillion. In the Hobbit, should you choose to read it, you will discover the War of teh Five Armies, where Dwarves, Humans, Elves, Goblins, etc. all fought eachother for treasure.
And don't worry, I will be going elsewhere. Once you reach max level and get tired of killing rats, what will you do then? Go hunt more rats? Woop De Doo!

Why does everyone say LOTRO is going to flop. I think it isn't going to have such a impact as WoW or EVE or something, but I think many MMO-ers are going to play it. I've seen some movies, I have read alot, and I like the most things. But I need to play it before I can say something.

Using a company as a reason to hate a game before release is completely legit and unstandable. A company who turned one big franchise into a very poor mmo is likely to do it again.
Also I cannot see myself playing this game over other future mmo's being released, considering they are all better in all aspects.
EDIT: I don't see much hatred or whining actually, we just think the game will flopand the company sucks, it is mostly our own personal opinions. I also gave you a great reason as to why I will not touch the game other then the company. Hope this post better suits your needs.
Originally posted by Apocalyptica The big fault with LotR I find is that you can only play the good side. I mean the perfect setting of good & evil for players and they took half of it out. Its a shame.
There is a reason you can only play the good side. Simply put, the game will be following the story line that everyone is familiar with. Evil is going to lose, there will be no change in that. Do you really want to play the races in an ongoing story that will lose no matter what?

I would like nothing better than to see turbine produce a really successful MMO based on the greatest Fantasy novels ever written. It certainly has the potential to be good.
If it does badly it wont be due to lack of interest in the genre. The success or failure of this game is 100% dependent on whether or not they make it a quality game.
Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.

First of all, it was called the Battle of Five Armies. Secondly, they DID NOT fight each other for treasure. I suggest you re-read the book if that's what you thought was going on.
Thorin and Co. (including Bilbo) occupied the Lonely Mountain after Smaug was killed. Then, Elves and Men, together, arrived on the scene. They had thought that the Dwarves had been killed by Smaug and were surprised to see them there. They then negoitated with Thorin, who acted like a jerk to them while waiting for Dain to show up with Dwarves from the Iron Mountains. In an attempt to prevent bloodshed, Bilbo stole the Arkenstone and gave it to the leaders of the Elves and Men, and Thorin agreed to exchange it for 1/14th of the horde (Bilbo's share.) About that time, Dain shows up. And this is where they almost come to blows. HOWEVER, just at this time, the Goblins (Orcs) show up, led by Blog, son of Azog. The Goblins attack everyone, and Elves, Dwarves, and Men (and one Hobbit) all join together and fight against the Goblins... not for money, but for their survival.
The only actual battles that take place between the Elves and the Dwarves in Middle-earth occur during the First Age, several *thousand* years before the time of the War of the Ring in which LotR Online is to be set. And those battles were fairly limited.
