A 40k mmorpg would be awesome but IMO in order to create it too many shortcuts would be taken and it would end up being watered down....
I wont be suprised if a 40k mmorpg is developed if WAR is a success...

Please link where you saw this. If that is true. There goes all the respect that I ever had for blizzard. Diablo MMO is the worst thing that could happen to that series. It had an awesome story, and now they're going to make it so there is no impact to the world.

It's simple economics - unfortunately I don't know any sci-fi MMORPG that is a huge success currently (SWG is by now a total failure and EVE Online has less than a million players = decent but not huge success).
Every big hit - EQ, WOW, GW - have all been fantasy titles. But one can only hope that WAR does well so that 40-K is one day considered a viable project.

Just you wait. When the fans has had enough they will form a mob against Blizzard. Light your torch boy!

I've actually learned the reason behind this. Mythic wants to create a great game. They've been looking at all the previous MMO's including DAoC. By doing this Mythic has found that Fantasy games have a much higher sucess rate then sci-fi games. They've discovered that more people want to play fantasy games with elves and orcs. (Sad but true.)
Creating a War40k game would definately distinguish itself from WoW hopefully reducing the amount of retards calling it a WoW clone.(Then again, they might just call it WoW in space. : / You never know what the WoW fanboys will say.) However, a War40k game would be immensely hard to make. While Warhammer takes place one just one planet, War40k takes place on a million+ planets. Even creating a solar system would be immensly difficult if each planet was on the same scale as WAR online. While mythic could make the game on just one planet, that wouldn't do the TT justice in my book.

It's a real pity that Warhammer Online didnt get made before WoW. Only then those fuckers would know their place.
would love to see a 40k online. Frankly I am more than tired of the fantasy genre MMO. Its been done to death. I loved SWG before the NGE and especially before the CU (and jedi) where iit wasnt about level persay and was all skll based. Loads more fun. I want SCI-FI. Not Eve, which is beautiful but somewhat repetitive or a MMOFPS, but a legitimate MMORPG SCI-FI style. I would be all about 40k online. Who doesn't love space marines? (even though I would be eldar all the way!) Someone please save us from the fantasy MMO blahs.

Just my 2 cents.
Yeah, but how many people want to play SCI-FI. Right now the sci-fi people have no where really to go. We are all waiting in the wings. SWG was wildly popular until poor business practices and a development team that was too often redirected ruined the game and lost the player base. Yes I know its star wars, but regardless, its SCI-FI. People want to play sc-fi, they just dont get much of a chance.
I think Warhammer is going to be a lot less redundant than WoW's boring tri-battlefield farm. Warhammer is going to be a lot better in pvp, I enjoyed Dark Age's pvp a hell of a lot more than WoW's, and this is being made by the company that made DAoC.

*cough**cough* Let me clearify something, gameworkshops, the creator of warhammer, has the ownership of all things warhammer. They choose who gets exclusive rights to thier material. The earlier game of war, I do not remember the company that made it, well the earlier game looked like but this was around 98. Gameworkshop abandoned the project. The company working on the game deciding to keep going until GW took thier rights away. The concept for a warhammer mmo has been around since before 1998. GW belived mythic would be the choice to make thier game. So they gave them rights. A warhammer 40k game was probally thought of , but GW leaned strongly toward the old world. Why? Because there is so much more to it. So you see, a warhammer game based on the fantasy table top was concieved long before Mythic sold and became part of ea. Besides, GW basically gets say on whats in the game.
Imo the main reason for the comparison between WoW and WAR comes from the WAR CGI intro, something that is very much in the style of WoW. A bad design decision by Mythic. Had they made one single fight scene with some surprising twists or three different BATTLE(not duel) videos mixed together showcasing the 3 races, I think a lot of the comparisons would have been dropped. Who knows.. Maybe it was in fact a conscious decision used to arouse the wowzers out there and get some publicity (any publicity is good publicity). They'll have to make their game stand out a lot now, though.
At least a 40k video would have been different from any MMO in the field since we haven't seen any flashy CGI from EVE or any other futuristic MMOs.
Someone earlier in the thread mentioned using Inquisitor as the basis for a 40k- themed MMO, which could work out better, that game is based more on individual characters than just being Space Marine #4001.
Inquisitors can go the solo route, have a retinue (group), ultimately base the game around group play, but heretics/demons need to be tracked down via a full group, so each character starts their individual training in their role, have specific role-oriented quests for solo play, then all roles come together for major quests.
With EvE and Homeworld out there I am suprised Battlefleet Gothic hasn't resurfaced in some way shape or form.
Mythic also has all of that old Imperator code laying around, if you looked at the screens it was kinda close to 40k, especially the Centurions, they looked like Terminators. I saw/played Imperator a few years back at E3, and I couldn't wait for the game to come out it was something other than fantasy, but unfortunately cancelled.

Soon enough all game developers will be working on MMORPG's its
the future of gaming. I bet many classics will get made into MMORPG's.
