Indeed, you don't 'see' them, but that doesn't mean they are not playing.

Actually, if I was a girl I would hide my gender as much as possible in MMORPG's.

Im female, and I play male characters half of the time
I would estimate that 20-30% of the MMO population is female, if my guilds and clans were representative at all.

There are times when I'm really tempted to claim I'm a guy irl, useally those times are when a random guy I've never met before runs up and goes 'are you really a girl?'

You have to think about it with a little bit of common sense.

15 years ago a female playing video games was a bit of an annamoly, then again, so was seeing a female ridding a motorcycles.

10 years ago, as gaming was really hitting hard all over the world, females were already part of the gaming culture and steadily growing.

5 years ago, developers and producers fell flat on their face when they started realizing just how huge the female market was and all of a sudden, girl gamers were a big deal and everyone talked about it, basicallly all we did was sit there looking confused saying: "Uhm boys? We've been here all along!"

Present time, you don't hear about us every single day anymore for a few reasons.

First, we're completely tired of the subject, tried of being known as "girl-gamers" instead of just gamers. It's annoying as hell.

Second, it's just turning into common ground now. I work part time at an EBgames (couple days a week, on call shifts, that kind of thing) and sooooo many girls come in to pick up games now it's really nothing special. I'm not even the only girl that work there, we have 2 other female staff that are even bigger gamers then I am at this point.

Third, LOOSERS. Do you know how annoying it is to be asked to "proove" who you are just because of your gender, or go into a gaming store that employs clueless red necks who ask you whether your looking for your boyfriend or your brother.

Then there's the idot segment in the gaming industry that of course want to do nothing more then over sexualize female gamers... which COMPLETELY blows my mind. All it does is keep males thinking about us in one and only one way and alienates the hell out of future females gamers.

So see, there's no big thing about it, it's just a natural progression.

Hihi, you are obviously not from Germany. Here its quiet normal for a girl to play, so yes, we are just gamers here. And we ride motorciyles for ages!!!

I know a lot of girls who play mmorpgs.

Well, half of my linkshell on final fantasy XI is female so that's where I know most from.

But to me it really isn't that weird, I was on warcraft III last night and during a ladder match. I was partnered randomally with two girls in a three vs three random match. They told the three guys who we were fighting and we actually won because they underestimated their abilitys. She says she does it all the time to win a game.

I can see how that works.

I understand ya, War. If I were a female I'd feel the exact same way. I can't believe how many guys are still shocked to hear they're playing CS:S with a girl, if not outright sexist towards females in videogames.

Unfortunately, that'll happen. I run into racists every now and then who complain about playing with a Vietnamese kid, but what are you going to do? There are idiots every where in this life and, what with AOL making it so damn easy, they've found their way on to the internet.

Girls playing videogames online despite the obvious stigmatism FTW!

I have female friends who play games, mostly not online, as the world of mmorpg is still dominated by guys. where as the offline world is populated by one gamer at a time, so it doesnt matter, if i was a girl i would probably either a not play games (you never know) or play offline games only, rather than play in a world where you are underestimated for being a girl or be repeatedly questiond for doing so.

there should be less emphasis on gender in the real world, unless of course the real world comes in to it...

and besides as someone who has been repeatedly destroyed by girls in previous mmorpgs i dont care, people should play if they want to and not have to be thought of as a guy or a girl, unless they want to..

Actually there are quite a lot of female MMO gamers out there ... much more than one would expect.

Often it is the wifes or even girlfriends of addicted MMO gamers that are just trying to share the common hobby (and get hooked)

Girls are also often very good players , outmatching males in both concentration and reflexes (but having troubles with directions..lol)

So anyway , you could expect to have 1 female player on every 30 male.

But the fact that buggs me the most is the idiots that aproach you when you play with female avatar (toon)
thinking you are female, and start hitting on you ... it is creepy ..

my mans fatal last words were, "hey you might like this new game I'm playing, you should try it (AC2)."  I had never played a mmorpg before that.  Now Im a hard core mmorpg addict.  I would say Im more into it then my man.  I've been spending hours looking into the next one I will play.

I think the percentage of female population depends on the game.  In WoW  I was is guilds where females were almost equal in number to males  (althought most of us were taken ladies).

I dont mind innocent flirting.  The only time I ever got unwanted attention was when I was sporting a piece of armor that would make a porn star jealous.  So  I bought my character an undershirt shirt and problem solved.

Most of the time my male counterparts have been very respectful and helpful.

Ofcourse there are females who enjoy gaming, they're equally important to the industry as males are.

Some of the attitude can be funny at times as well, like when a guy in SWG tried telling me how I should be hunting to get the skills I wanted, uh huh thats nice but I actuelly want the medical xp I was getting by healing as well as the combat xp. It can also be fun to turn the table, my brothers and their friends hated playing againts me in team fortress :)

there is also the 'issue' (i put that in inverted commas due to the fact that many may not find it an issue at all) that the majority of female avatars are addorned in the most provocative outfits, regardless ofgender in real world this may be a reason that is unbalancing that populations interest in games... now i dont deny that people may want skimpy outfits, but somtimes people should take sassys advice and wear a top...

after then thinking about this the avatar isnt real... so my argument is all the more disturbing... but... from a male point of view tgis may be a reason that has lowered the female population in mmorpgs.

Again, your missing the point. The difference between 1990 and 2006 in the world of female gaming is night and day. If you dissagree, well that's fine, I'm only one person and with admitedly limited experience, I have no problem acknowledging that.

Regardless, it only bolsters my original sentiment. All this time females have been gamers and the industry only started to make a big deal about this what... 5 or 6 years ago? And still will all this, we're continually overtly sexualized as if that's the only thing we can contribute.

My original point was that people continue to make a big deal of "girl gamers" when most of us just want to be gamers, period. And perhaps that's why the OP feels like there's less of us going around now.

If you're hunting for girls to hit on in games, of course you're not going to find many playing. Most girls playing games are playing games because they enjoy the game, not because they're desperate for some hot cyber from a random elf. If you're out looking for 'bitches,' you're far more likely to find a guy pretending to be a girl, and should rember that MMORPG stands for Many Men Online Role-Playing Girls. If you go out looking for people to game with and just generally chat with, you'll discover that quite a few of them turn out not to be guys.

I agree with you 100% Shae.

The female population in MMO's and video games in general has definitely grown over the past 5-10 years and I believe it will continue this trend. I don't see what the big deal is anymore. People need to get over the shock that YES Girls do play video games too!! and be done with it.

We're all gamers in the end.............male or female.
