I'm a computer freak. I'm building my second water cooled computer now. Why? It's a hobby, and it's fun! Does it cost much? First time, yes, but after that you will mostly reuse the components which lowers the price dramatically. Almost all of the components I use in the water cooling has been taken from my first build, but I bought a new cabinet (the old one was too small for all the parts to fit) which is about 3.5 times the width of a maxi tower and the same height. New parts in each build are the mother board, CPU and memory (if the MB required a new type, which this one did with DDR3 on the old and DDR4 on the new). I'm still using my GTX690, but hope to buy a new one in 3 months time. The price for something like this, with most of the water cooling components and the cabinet reused, would probably be around US$ 3,000 + US$1,200 for a new graphics card, or about what you pay for a good gaming rig. In addition to that you will use a LOT of hours building it, redoing stuff you don't like, fixing problems that arise and what not. Since I had to buy some new stuff, and the economy isn't insanely good, I started buying parts in December 2014 and started the building in April 2015. I finally have all the parts, but had to fix a few things, so it's still a week before it's finished.
Who am I and what do I do? I'm educated electronic engineer (1981) and bought my first PC (Olivetti M24) in 1985. I taught myself about computers (which wasn't very difficult back then) and started working with IT in 1987 and have worked with programming, user support, consulting, servers and networks. My last job was with a WAN spanning several countries in Europe and Asia. I'm retired and use most of my time doing odd jobs on the house, playing with my dog (Samoyed) and 4 cats and playing online games. I'm born in 1958, live on a small farm on the east side of a large lake called Randsfjorden in Oppland, Norway.
