GH/WT are de facto necessary unless you're fire; you need them for four different utility spells. You could probably get fine without WW if you're ice; the Celestia dropped gear is almost as good. In fact, I skipped WW to get a bit less XP.

Don't forget the Bazaar in Year 1 (?) and the critical changes that came out with Polaris in Year 8.
