I think people hate it because they can't say "Wow!" whenever they're surprised without being bothered by nearby gamers. It forces people to be creative and make up new expressions of awe. But by then, the moment is lost...

I think playing Chrono Trigger with a massively multiplayer amount of friends would be pretty invigorating.
