1. Yes, Blizzard did some things right. WoW, for a period of time, set the gold standard for hotbar MMOs. However, the launch was subpar and the game really wasn't consistently playable for the first 6 months. I had to reroll because my original…

I don't think that's it at all. I think the problem was with the people who published Rift over in Russia, not Trion itself. I certainly hope Trion opens up a Russian language server (or several depending on the …

I don't see what's wrong with how it is now. It's been like this for years where you could take a higher level in a dungeon with you to help run through for gear/gold/xp/achievements...why change it now? Makes no se…
Any argument that starts with, "This is how it is and always will be ... you should deal with it," is flawed logic. Soon (tm) became a running joke on the WoW forums because how long do you wait when you're paying money and part (or all) of the ser…
At this point in the games life, culling has been address in WvW, and players flocked to it make the battles even more epic and interesting.
Yup, release to production first and then worry about addressing all the bugs. I hate people that accept m…
Good luck. Just looking at the bullet points above help me understand why crowd sourcing isn't always the best design solution. Looks like generic MMO design where players pay to win.
I hate authors that makes excuses for software companies' day one issues. Maybe the issues get resolved, maybe they don't. Review the game as is and edit the review later if the issues get resolved.
For example, at least Polygon docked Sim Cit…
That's right: Seven million people paying $15.00 a month to play a nine year old game. Even in Asia where game time is purchased by the hour, the amount of income generated by WoW is staggering and could probably outpace the GNP of many small nation…
Good article. Really, theme parks are a time = reward design. There is very little newness. Once you solved a dungeon or raid boss game mechanic in WoW, it wasn't difficult to figure out how to solve the same game mechanic in Rift.
The problem i…

I thought this article was going in another direction. Sounds like a highschool commentary from someone that hasn't take business 101 or macroeconomics.
If you want to argue sub costs vs f2p / microtxns, that's valid. Trying argue $15/mo sub f…
I enjoyed the article. However, I think a lot of the good about Torchlight boils down to its sginifcanlty lower price point. The expectations are a lot lower and it makes you wonder how a $20 can be bth compared to and considered better than a $60.
I don't think this necessarily addresses the problems, but I love how willing Arenanet has been to release lots of data through many different social mediums.

It seems like a simple thing.
Look at GW2 ... one of the things that really draws you into the world are the random npc…
The two key problems with TSW has always been:
1. The barrier to entry. Subs made sense in the past, but not given the current state of the MMO market. Subs can't compete with GW2's business model right now.
2. The combat needs to be flashier.…
Thumbs up on the review in progress so far. I think it mirrors how I feel about the game. I rolled a Asura Mesmer, so I've been following a simira path too ... basically, Infinity Ball this, find a bigger power source that, try not to blow up the …
