I've pre-loaded the game on steam, but I just opened the LaunchPad in the game directory and it's now downloading a 9gb patch :S I take it this is required?

I have played CoH, but only the BETA, and I was a scrapper I think, but not CoV. I was looking at reviews and such of CoV yesterday, and most places say it gets really repetative after a short time. I've been looking in to EQ2 and Warhammer Online …
