I have played most of the bigger RPG's. I am a casual gamer who does not care for the 'Raid required' games due to the fact I rarely can dedicate 2-3 hours of uniterrupted gaming at a time. I like PvP, but I like RvR even more. Yes, Trammel did kill UO, though at the time I thought it was a good idea.
LOTRO did not kill WoW for a few obvious reasons.
- combat is slower and people don't care for that in games
- graphics required a MUCH better rig, and many people just didn't want to spend that
