I found that having more than 512mb ram helped tons - cheap too, way cheaper than a vid card.

I had a P3 1.3 with 512 mb ram. I was getting chop chop chop, but then I upgraded my ram for $50 at Frys and since then the game has been really smooth. I think its all about the ram. My video card ain't that hot.
