That survey is garbage. I might be able to understand the results if they tally in crap online browser games like Neopets, but in terms of MMORPGs, the results are pure baloney.
So are you saying that we're smarter because we don't break the law, or just that we make more money and thus don't need too? Either way, I agree. Neither of those things is true, so no. But if 2 guys buy the game, 2 girls buy the game, and 8 more guys just pirate the game, that's still 5 times more guys playing overall. I certainly did, the all time best selling game that. Oh wait, I see, you don't consider "The Sims" to be a game. Nope, but if most girls are flocking to play The Sims, you can't actually say that they are playing the same games as guys are. Don't get too excited there bucko, I said man... Doubtfull you apply. The only thing I'm doubting is whether you actually have any men knocking at your door anyway. Most guys can live without being bitched at for no reason.
Ya'know... I had a whole response written out, it was quite witty and seathing but then someone sent me a PM saying, you just waren't worth it. I took a deep breath and agreed, your not .
You gave me a snarky reply, I gave one back (my bad for falling for the trap) out of fun and you can't do anything but get really personal and attack me as a person and as a female, which is completely fine.
It matters because, hopefully, the more game designers begin to realize that we women actually do play these games, the more they will consider us when they are designing the game.
I mean, I appreciate a hot curvy bod on a female avatar and big swords just as much as any guy, but come on...I want to see some beefy hunks or fight in pink chain mail at least every once in a while! And can I get some magical ribbons or scarf to protect my head rather than a clunky helmet? It is messing up my hairdo.
But seriously. It gets annoying sometimes when you guys don't seem to notice that we are here, too.

That's a completely fair question, and the best comment yet. In actuality, it doesn't have to matter to you, in reality you don't have to care about it one way or the other.
I do though, because it's part of a demographic that I'm in and this is the same BS I've been hearing forever. Just look at this thread, how many comments have been made that are demeaning to women but do you think the mods are going to do anything? Of course not, they never do and maybe (I'm not an expert) they shoudln't.
But on the other hand, I've seen comments made by female posters that are along same lines, and they've been deleted every time. It's really not THAT big of a deal but it's there.
So then the other side of that coin is that if no one says anything diffrent then it becomes the norm. I don't try to just randomely bitch about these things, most of the people that know me here know that I'll take my little stands here and there but I'm a pretty decent chick that's not "always" on a feministic tyrade but sometimes it needs to be said. I've always said that between the two, I'm a gamer first, girl second.
I guess at the core of it, that's why it matters to me anyways. It's not the silly things that some people say, because whatever that's the internet, you either learn to live with it or go read a book. It's that we, as a gender, can be so easily dismissed by the other gender and if a female attempts to prove otherwise, she's labeled a bitch or something I've been called here more then once, a fat lesbian feminist.
Of the 117 million active gamers in the U.S., 56 percent play games online. Sixty-four percent of those online gamers are female, according to results of the survey, released by Nielsen Entertainment on Thursday.
They are saying that 65 million of those 117 million play online games but they aren't talking about OUR kinda games:) The total active paid Gaming Subscribers in June of this year was like a lil over 13 million - and that's worldwide- not just US:) I got that 13 mill figure from MMOGchart.com.
So there's gotta be a TON of ladies playing Bingo and card games and being counted as an online gamer LOL!! And I think it's opposite in online games- I'd say that us ladies make up 35% of the gamers online- but I'm just guessing based on my clans and guilds.
Any survey can be manipulated to reach a target the surveyor wants. If they feel they will get the most reaction with a target answer, then they will strive for it.They could target one of the largest online games such as sims, wich most likely would be predominatley women, maybe as high as 80%.Take that and a few other games that are perhaps 50/50 and you could hit a target of 64% easily.Do a survey targetting mainly war type games such as call of duty ,there is a ton of them, and you would get a very high numbers favouring more male players.

Silkakc, thank you for the info. There you go, the survey does include all those games that no one really gives a about. Other then then 104 million people who play them We can be sure as heck they don't kill people over losing phat loot like, we do in mmorpgs. MMORPGs are serious, those online Yahoo games are not employing cities full of Chinese game-workers. Those 1 hour creation time , those etch-a-sketch graphic games got nothing on MMos. So if you want to cry and prattle feminist BS , then go ahead, but please do it in-regards to Yahoo advertisement, heaves no the guys will miss that. Or even better on line poker for the ladies.. Or whatever your issues seems to be Shae, i hope its resolved. But only someone totally blinded by ideology and most prejudice, would ignore the fact that mmorpgs are heavily dominated by males. Now if your issue is that it shouldn't be and that no one is making games girls like, then go make one yourself and stop Bi***ing at others to do it for you.
OMG more girls play with dolls , those oppressive women and there evil socialization of poor little boys. It like a giant circle the mothers tell the boys they have to be strong and insensitive , but at the same time they complain about their husband who is that way. IT IS A CONSPERICY, AHHHhhhhh....
OK really, sorry to go through so many loops I just do not understand how some people take the idea and movements to become equal and then use them to support inequality. I agree this is important for the "lame" online gaming /ad. sites, that about it. As for MMO's they do not care who they attract just if they do, and as for the females in them, Great, i can remember when UO was on the downfall and DAOC was was starting and how if you where "female", you got tons of shit for free. OK yeah its lame , true, but still today whens the last group in WoW or DAOC, or EQ been like sorry but your a girl we are not taking you and your hot avatar's body out to exp..... (there you have it, I have never seen it done and im a bit older then most mmorpg players, so I have seen a lot).
However, I agree there is a growing population of female game players; its larger then the growing population of male doll players, which is going down with the decrease in action figures. Males must not be sensitive or imaginative enough to play with them. Lets face the facts there is a biological and genetic difference between the genders. Physically and mentally however that doesn't concluded only males can play "real" online games, no one said this. If you read the posts in this thread, what they are saying, is that many of the females the survey lists are playing Yahoo-ish games, which IS ture. Yet you go off male bashing, no offensive Shae, but I think you got this one wrong.
That being game co.s would be well off trying to appeal to both females and males, they can make more money, however, at the moment a total focus on this for large game companies would HURT their profits. And if females or males like something: clothing , game, hair style, go ahead and get it, but don't try to say more guys get their nails done then girls. I guess we could include biting and clipping one's nails in the worst way imaginable as getting one's nails done, that would help the % for the guys; but it would be misleading. That being said i feel the prospective is not that of a male but of a mmorpg player who would think of online games as mmorpgs, not shockwave/java/whatever programs.
PS. not attacking , but confronting because i love the truth. (The truth teh males sell of course, duhh...)
Edit - i also want to see hot bodies on the guys, i mean come on where are the mad abs.

As a side note, I wonder how fast I'd get a warning/ban from the mods if I started saying the only games guys play are Online Poker and when they do manage to play a real mmo, the only way the can do it is by buying gold. Hmmm... probably pretty fast.... not that I'd actually ever say that, of course.
Out of true video games I think WoW and the Sims probably top the two most popular female played games. It really it surprising how WoW has attracted a number of females, much higher % than any other mmorpg I would definitely say.

Do you really think of us that way? : (
What part? That I think guys only play online poker and can only play an MMO if they buy gold? Then no, of course not, I was being facsicious.
But do I think I'd get warned and or banned if that's what I started writing every time a guy said they played an MMO? Absolutely.
Really though, discussing MMO and FPS games.. there might be 4 or five female players out of every hundred. Tops. When you add in the Sims online and bejeweled on yahoo games.. then you get the kind of numbers in this poll. They are still a little skewed.. most male gamers wouldn't admit to playing the Sims online, or consider bejeweled an online game
Also the survey didn't mention anything about WHERE the survery sruvey'd people, or if it was even a proper represenation of the populous.. Maybe they stood at Gamestop and Asked 100 guys and 100 gals if they play video games...
This survey was conducted far to poorly to come to any conclution.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
Lol intresting havent seen many girls play online games for a while but they have cell phones/mobile phones which they use alot more which have games on so that may count and then they would obviously win but at the moment I see alot of men playing but barely and women I know around 50 women playing games but over a few hundred men so I dont know where they got these figures from but I dont think there right.

Then you are arguing that A) women didn't have jobs until now or women never shopped until now? I mean, assuming the claim about demographics is true, one of these things must have been true until a year or two ago.

What year do you live in, 1950? The female consumer demographic has been the fastest growing for over 15 years now. I worked for several sale / marketing organizations over the last 15 years, it just common knowledge.
But if you gotta have your little internet link, do a search using a few key words...search engines are easy to use, honest.
Thats enough, cut and paste your own. Now, I'm not suggesting you will be able to wrap you tiny little view around these few links in a few seconds you will take to scan them, people actually study this sort of thing for a living and of course you can easily dismiss anything as inaccurracte and hype or lies so believe what you want.
What those articles are saying is that women already dominate all consumer spending and their share is growing. Yeah, many women have jobs, but so do a lot of men; how come it appears women have vastly more money to spend than men, eventhough at the same time many claim women are not paid as much for the same work as men? Where does the extra money come from? Or have men in the US stopped going to work? Even if nearly all women had jobs, surely it should be about 50/50 at best since nearly all men also have jobs? Not like "vastly over 50% and growing" like now?
Comments
Exactly.
Only MMORPG players would think "online gaming" == MMORPG.
Thousands of people play online golf, online football, online poker, online monopoly, etc. "Online gaming" does NOT mean MMORPGs only.
