Firstly, of course women gamers are growing in numbers ... Without needing a survey I've seen it myself and that applies to "serious" mmorpgs too. Sure guys did have a head start with their Xboxes and Playstations that often "mummy" and "daddy" paid for .... the money argument is totaly irrelevant! but amazing how its brought into a male/ female discussion!
Secondly, why do I get the impression, that some guys (not all I hasten to add) still need to put women in the "Bingo" "kitchen sink" bracket. Guilds are run, items are crafted and battles are fought extremely well by both sexes .... and guys don't be scared, your not going to get your purple epic stolen but... I can't guarantee you won't get your righteous orbs pinched!!
Shae had every right to be defensive, but even then she was subject to name calling! there is definitly too much sexism in these online games ..Guys, wake up!!! remember when you used to laugh at women drivers ..untill the insurance companies proved you wrong!!
Surveys are only a guide-line and stats change yearly in these games, as for mmorpgs. of course more and more women will play .. after all these games are great fun!
Maybe one day we'll see guys in bikini armor, now that would be cool!!!
Feminists are tards. They perpetuate the stereotype that women are all mentally challenged morons who need encouragement to play video games to prove how "equal" they are to macho males who spend hours "raiding" aka playing with dolls, or moving a mouse around in BF2 while pretending to be members of a military group.
Newsflash
Playing a video game isn't a manly activity.
It's not a difficult activity.
It's not a productive activity.
Its not something to be proud of.
It's not a "good" thing. People with lives don't have time for video games.
People should be out there playing sports for real, or clubbing, or be out there affecting the REAL world, or improving their bodies, running marathons, becoming doctors and scientists, doing great things with themselves.
Instead Conan comes home from his job at 7-11 to go "raid."
He's a loser in RL, doesn't spend time rectifying that, but he has time to spend all weekend in battlegrounds trying to get rank 14.
If people spent as much energy on their RL as they did on MMORPG's, they'd become the movers and shakers of the world.
Instead we have CNET gloating over the fact that there are more female losers than ever before, and that's some kind of progress for female equality.
I'm going to try to be respectful here, even though you havn't shown the smallest degree of respect to me or any other female on these boards, and for some reason people like are you able to go untouched on these forums.
Originally posted by Jade6 What those articles are saying is that women already dominate all consumer spending and their share is growing. Correction, what those articles are saying is that we are the largest consumer market in specific segments and that in certain other markets, we are the fastest growing demographic. Consumer spending is just about equal. Yeah, many women have jobs, I'm going to stop you right there and correct you again, it's not "many" women have jobs, it's "most" women have jobs. but so do a lot of men; how come it appears women have vastly more money to spend than men, eventhough at the same time many claim women are not paid as much for the same work as men? That's a pretty simple answer, but it's two fold. A) We just spend more money, as in a larger % of our income. We spend more because we have more consumer products geard towards us. The female demographic between the ages of 14 to 34 is the single most sought after market in the world, 5 billion dollars is spent annualy in advertising to this segment alone. We are quite simply better with our money, we are able to spend a larger % of our income because on the whole, we have greater control over our own spending. Studies have shown that contrary to popular belief women as whole tend to save more with less, accrue less debt over time and bet the debt they have much faster. Where does the extra money come from? It's called a job Or have men in the US stopped going to work? Even if nearly all women had jobs, surely it should be about 50/50 at best since nearly all men also have jobs? Not like "vastly over 50% and growing" like now? Well, see my point above and that's your answer. I also want to add here to no is attacking men, no one is saying that men are becoming somehow less important because of any of this, so it's pretty funny that you actively attack women so actively. But anyways...
Women are increasing in numbers of players!! woot, that means that women are going to finally equall to men in MMORPGS?? WOOT FOR EQUALITY!!
but as a mans veiw point, this means MORE FAT GIRLS IN RL, MORE WEAK BODY GIRLS IN RL, and of course, DECREASING GIRLS IN RL! Haha, men were always idiots werent they? well guess what? Women are becoming idiots like us, because they wana be equall to us. Idiot = Idiot ... simple enough.
Plus I have a very immportant question. This is very serious, as to the answear of this question will open the eyes of both females and males. So please read carefuly!!
"Where my god damn food, woman!?!"
We Cry for the Blood of a Bird, But Not the Blood of a Fish, Oh Blessed are Those with Voice.
A fat chick "raiding" with cheeto crumbs in her belly button typing out "How do you like my new Bikini armor and matching sword?"
At the same time she thinks she's an equal.
Yeah an equal to all the rest of the fat morons doing the same thing.
Somehow "equality" has come to mean lowering yourself to be more like the loser from the other sex.
"Hey if men can sit around, drink beer and belch the alphabet, we can too."
I thought the whole point of empowering women was to actually IMPROVE them, not jump into the mud to assert equality with the pig.
Progress is actually if LESS women play video games.
PS - This is good news for males. I'm glad more of you are finally getting yourselves unhooked from this sham industry that seeks to bait you with random number generators.
In alot of ways MMORPG's operate on the same principles as gambling addiction. Its the thrill of rolling the virtual die, seeing the big crits, opening the chest to find the uberloot, its the same thing people feel when they spend their paycheck on slot machines hoping to score a jackpot.
This is a dirty little secret that the MMORPG industry wishes people didn't know, and that most people don't realize.
Maybe overall, but I haven't yet played an MMO where a majority of folks were female.
Interestlingly enough though, I'm a freshman in college, and at least half the girls here are willing enough to whoop up on me in Halo 2, so I wouldn't doubt that females are becoming more part of the video gamer subculture.
what realy makes me mad about all of this is no one listed how many hermaphodites play online games. I mean come on now I want to see how many Midget Hermaphodites play online games.
You know this post took a turn to the tad bit "volatile" but hey it's fine competition is great. Alright for all you who want to make negative comments about women gather to my left for your raid group. For all you making negative guy comments gather to my right and form your raid group. Now the rest of you help me move this kitchen sink between em and watch the blood fly after the left raid groups start commenting about it.
Women, the most oppressed group in the world and yet they complain less about than almost any group. But hey who am I to talk I am just sitting here in Afghanistan watching women get beat just for going outside because their husband didn't send them to the market.
I think, and I could be wrong, but males outnumber females for subscription based games. WoW, EQ2, EVE, MMO's in general seem to be dominated by males. I do believe that if you add in those Yahoo games and poker then women are about the same or ahead of males as this survey suggests. It would be interesting to see a survey of MMO's only, well MMO is a broad term, lets say "subscription based" games. And by subscription I mean a monthly fee. A few MMO's like guildwars and some others I know of shouldn't be included because they don't have a subscription.
We don't need to cook because your big bellies are fat enough, you game-playing freaks! And we don't really need to clean the house much anymore ever because you never leave your computer desks! And laundry? When was the last time you got a new pair of clean socks or undies?
Okay, all silly jokes aside - how did this topic come to this?
Look, playing video games or online games isn't a bad thing. Taking the games more seriously than you take real life is. Traditionally more women do the shopping because men often don't like to shop - women are out there spending money on themselves and their families, which is one reason to explain how we can spend more than the men who we (generally) earn less than.
And we aren't trying to say, in terms of MMORPGs, that 50% of the players are female. Nor are we necessarily trying to say that it should be that way either, not necessarily. All I want is for you guys to at least acknowledge that we are here, and that we make up more than 0.001% of the MMO population. I guess I am hoping that once you guys realize that you may be a little more hesitant to say some of the kind of stuff that has been posted on this thread (and that I get that pink chain mail).
Afghan women get beaten up? You watch too much Fox News. I live in America, and women get beatn up so much, its common practice, thats why we have tons of women shelters every where. Even gave it a nice name, "Domestic Abuse", has a nice tone to it, doesn it?

I watch too much fox news? I am IN Afghanistan. I am in the friggin United States Air Force and I am in a remote area in Afghanistan on a small installation. Screw the news, Fox and CNN are both full of crap most of the time. You don't know crap about it apparently. Yeah I know domestic abuse I grew up in that. And guess what THERE ARE NO FREAKING SHELTERS IN AFGHANISTAN. In the U.S. you go to jail if you are found guilty of domestic abuse. Here in Afghanistan, if a woman was to get uppity about her man beating her, he might beat her some more.
I watch too much Fox news, you shouldve read the part that says "But hey who am I to talk I am just sitting here in Afghanistan". I am just happy technology has reached the peak that I can sit here and get shot at and still get on MMORPG.com . So thanks for your input and all your abundant knowledge.
I'd like to give Jade6 the best troll reward today, for takinga benign subject like the proliferation of female gamers, and turning it into a sex-war. We appreciate your distinct, 1950's view of the fairer sex in this difficult new millenia the rest of us live in, but please keep it to your blog and any senseless prattle you may engage in with like-minded individuals face-to-face.
The study may not use the same definition of online games that most gamers would (meaning MMORPGs or online, multiplayer FPS matches, mostly) I think that it draws attention to the fact that women's growing interest in video games is moving in all directions, not just pet games and The Sims. As females are exposed to gaming more, and their demographic becomes included in video game marketing, I'm sure that they will continue to search out new genres for entertainment (contrary to Jade6's astute observation that women have constantly found it difficult to try something new).
I'm assuming that all of Jade's experience with women has stemmed from his matriarchal relationship, and maybe she spent all her time dusting bookshelves and knitting and backing apple pies. That's not his fault for being exposed to such an environment and forming his own conclusions. It is his fault for not opening his eyes to the world around him, but now I'm becoming a troll.
Either way, this article is only pointing out the directions that female gaming is growing in. If we are surprised or stand aghast at these numbers it's only due to our ignorance. Any objections we have to the "inappropriate terminology" stems from our fear of being over-run as males in, what initially started as a male oriented passtime.
I lived in Iran for 10 years, that is just left of Afghan. And the only people being a beaten up in Iran were the men by the wives (Not Joking). We had tons of Afghan refugees in Iran, and they never beat their wives. "Women getting beaten up because the husband forgot to send her to the market" That sounds totally insane and fictional.
We Cry for the Blood of a Bird, But Not the Blood of a Fish, Oh Blessed are Those with Voice.
If it were fictional I wouldn't have bothered saying it. But hey I see what I see. And I don't know why even bothered replying to your post. I have been here for 7 months now and I am sick of being here. I apologize for snapping at you. But to tell you the truth I could give a crap what you believe.
"I am just happy technology has reached the peak that I can sit here and get shot at and still get on MMORPG.com"
I think you phrased that wrong,
"I am just happy technology has reached the peak that I might get shot because im on MMORPG.com instead of..."
That was just a joke btw hehe. I respect our men in uniform. As I respect you, Keep up the good work. Hope you come back home soon.
But to be honest, thats just my experience of 10 years of living over there. Never seen or even heard of women getting beaten up, ever. If any, time to time, I heard of husbands getting beaten by their wives. But to be fair, Afghan and Iran are 2 different countries. So I apoligize for my ignorance!
We Cry for the Blood of a Bird, But Not the Blood of a Fish, Oh Blessed are Those with Voice.
I figured as much Jade, I'm sorry to have played into your trap.
In my defense though, it's important for intelligent, well-formed members of the populace to voice their disgust at the insipid, drivel that is being thrown about by folks such as yourself. It may seem harmless, but if words are knowledge, and knowledge is power then what you have to say is a weapon against decency.
Given that Neilsen surveys a very small percentage of people to arrive at their conclusions i wouldn't trust anything that neilsen states.
They are vaugue as to what they class as online games and dont appear to have bothered to classify the types.
I do believe that there will be some areas where women outnumber men, but in FPS/MMORPG games i doubt it.
This just seems to be a ploy by neilsen to make a name for themselves in online gaming since the cable companies want nothing to do with their new ratings system. I hope neilsen stays out of this area because their interest implies only one thing , and that is their desire/hope that advertising becomes commonplace in online games of any type, since its the only reason they seem to do business.
